2 Liturgical Catechesis The Procession & Song The Altar & the Candles Before the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass begins there is an opening song. During the song the celebrant (priest), the deacon, the readers, and the altar servers form a ceremonial procession to the sanctuary. The sanctuary is the raised part of the church where the celebration takes place. The presider s chair, the ambo (or lectern), the altar, candles, and the tabernacle are placed there. The song and the procession foster the unity of those of us gathered and focuses our thoughts on the liturgical season we are celebrating, in this case Easter, and prepares our hearts to listen to the Word of God. Once the priest and deacon genuflect they go up to reverence the altar by kissing it. Altars were a part of nearly every ancient tribal tradition. Early altars were made of earth or unhewn stones and had no fixed shape or pattern. The first mention of an altar in the Old Testament occurs in Genesis chapter 8 when Noah builds an altar and offers burnt offerings to God. In the early Christian tradition, when the liturgy was held in homes, altars were portable, made of wood, and carried in and out by deacons. It was important that the unique Sacrifice of Christ would not be perceived as the same as the many animal sacrifices in the Temple of Jerusalem or those of the pagan which were offered on stone or metal altars. As paganism declined the use of stone and metal altars in Christian celebrations became common. As the persecution of Christians increased, they often honored martyrs by celebrating the Eucharist on their grave sites actually over their very tombs. Later, churches were built over the tombs of saints (St Peter s Basilica in the Vatican). The altar took on the appearance of a tomb, instead of the earlier table shape, with a hole in it to place the relic (bone) of a saint. This tradition is visible in many of the altars we see in churches today. Some churches have chosen to reflect the early tradition of the Church by building altars of wood that have the appearance of a table rather than the squarish tombshaped style found in most of the older churches. Our altar, as you can tell, follows the tomb-shaped tradition. There is even a relic of the saint in the mensa (top of the altar). Relics of the saints are still a common, though not required, feature in the construction of altars today. We are fortunate to have a relic of St Matthew. It is encased in a marble stone right under the place where the priest offers the sacrifice of the Eucharist. In the early Church altars were free standing and not against the wall of the apse. In ancient Rome the priest faced the congregation and the doors which were to the east. Later, the Eastern custom of having the apse and its altar face east became popular in the West as well. Then the altar tended to be built against the apse wall and the priest had his back to the congregation. Facing the people is a return to the Roman basilica custom and being a table around which clergy and people can gather. The altar takes a central place in the thanksgiving that the Eucharist offers. It is the common table of the assembly, a symbol of the Lord, and is holy and sacred to the assembly s action and sharing. The priest kisses the altar as a sign of reverence at the beginning and end of the Eucharistic liturgy. One of the most beautiful images of the altar I have come to embrace is to see it as the hand of God. We place our offerings, our lives, our burdens, all we have in the hand of God. God in his love for us transforms those gifts and burdens, brings healing, nourishment, and renewed life to all present through the gift of the Body and Blood of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. You will also notice the use of candles in the liturgy. The use of lights as an adjunct to worship goes back to the beginning of the Church, and even farther. Among the Jews and in many pagan rites the use of lights had long been looked upon as appropriate in connection with public homage to their God or gods. In the Old Testament God commanded that a lamp filled with the purest Oil of Olives should always burn in the Tabernacle of the Testimony without the Veil. While the lamps on the other six branches of the menorah were lit only at night, the central one was never allowed to go out. This is how it came by its name of "Perpetual Lamp". For the Jews, the Perpetual Lamp symbolized God's Promise that He would always abide with His People Israel; thus the lamp flame stood for the Radiance of the Divine Presence. The candle in the red sanctuary lamp in our church burns all the time to remind us of the Lord s presence: Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity in the tabernacle. Early Christians probably used candles simply to dispel darkness, when the sacred mysteries were celebrated before dawn, as was the custom, or in the gloom of the catacombs. In the early church candles were lit at the tombs of the dead, especially martyrs. With Emperor Constantine, many candles added to splendor of the liturgy. The beautiful symbolism of the use of candles was soon recognized by the writers of the early Church: Light is pure; it penetrates darkness; it moves with incredible velocity; it nourishes life; it illumines all that comes under its influence. Therefore, it is a fitting symbol of God, the All Pure, the Omnipresent, the Vivifier of all things, the Source of all grace and enlightenment. It represents also our Blessed Savior and His mission. He was the Light of the world, [John 8:12, NAB] to enlighten them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. [Luke 1:79, NAB; Matthew 4:16, NAB.] Fr Bob 2

3 Divine Mercy Novena & Feast Day The Chaplet of Divine Mercy was given to Saint Faustina by Jesus with His instructions to recite it as a novena, especially on the nine days before the Feast of Mercy, Divine Mercy Sunday. Jesus promised: By this Novena (of Chaplets) I will grant every possible grace to souls. (796: Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska) Our Lord said to St Faustina: Encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given you. Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death. When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the Merciful Savior. Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy. Through the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will. (Diary: 687, 1541, 1731) Jesus also told St Faustina: On that day (Divine Mercy Sunday), the very depths of My tender mercy are opened. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. (Diary: 699) Next Sunday, April 8th Coffee & Donuts Sunday After the 8 & 10 am Masses, join us in the Angelorum for fellowship, coffee, and delicious donuts! To Register, call Janet at: or Rosalba: Our candidates for Confirmation had their retreat on March 17th. Though they were a little hesitant at the beginning, by the end of the day there were new friendships made, the bonds between them were strengthened and most importantly, the work of the Holy Spirit was truly evident! A big thank you goes to my leaders: Noel Furger, Ashley Hockers, Erin Knight, and Janet Nichols. Without them the retreat would not have been as successful as it was. May God bless and Mary keep our candidates as they continue their journey towards Heaven. ~ Joy Orozco 3
