CYCLE A AUGUST 6, 2017 The Transfiguration of the Lord "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." Oh, to be on that mountain! What a priceless experience for Peter, James, and John. If they had ever doubted, if they wondered whether Jesus was really who he said he was, their confidence surely got a boost on the day of the Transfiguration. Before their very eyes, Jesus' divine beauty radiated gloriously while the two ancient prophets also appeared in miraculous manner. And to top it off, the voice of God the Father spoke from the heavens and confirmed that it was all true: Jesus really is the Son of God! Why did Jesus reveal himself in such a remarkable way to these men? Perhaps we have an answer in today's epistle. Peter writes, "We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain." Peter mentions this fact in order to confirm his credibility as a preacher as he goes on to say, "We possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it." Because of the mission that Peter had to help shape and nurture the Church in its earliest days, his position as an "eyewitness" to the Transfiguration helped to gain the attention, and the faith, of his hearers. So although we were not there during this holy apparition, we have the benefit of it. We, and the faithful through the ages, have heard the testimony that Jesus is truly our God from those who saw in person that it was for real. In this way, the Transfiguration is able to bolster the faith of many, not just the three men who were there that day. May we have the grace to allow the feast we celebrate today to truly deepen our faith. 2

If you can spare an hour or two please call Joy at (715) Outreach Program is in need of HELP "Have you ever wanted to make a difference in the life of another person, to do something really great for someone whose life will never be the same because of you? Here is your chance. Global Outreach is a Catholic student exchange program which offers high school juniors the chance to attend a Catholic high school in the U.S.A. for one year. A host family is needed for the upcoming school year for a student whom we would like to place at Newman Catholic High School. Marie from the Czech Republic is ready for her exchange program in America but we need an open and generous family to host her. She will arrive in August 2017 and return to the Czech Republic in June The program needs a family to provide her with room, board, and transportation for the school year. By hosting a Global Outreach student, you will be offering a young person the opportunity of a lifetime. Your own family will also be greatly impacted and enriched as you open yourself to one of our students. Families who host students have many backgrounds: families with students in the Catholic high school, families with students in public schools, couples whose children are older and have left home, couples who never had children, single parent families, widows and widowers. This year the celebration will take place on Thursday, September 14, and hosted on the farm of Mike & Sue Fischer of St. Florian Parish in Hatley of the Wausau Deanery. This is a day to highlight the uniqueness of rural left values and to rejoice in the way that rural life contributes to the Church at large. As part of this annual celebration, farmers in the Wausau Deanery whose farm lands have been in continuous family ownership for 100 years or more will be recognized. All farmers who qualify as Century Farm owners are invited to submit their names for recognition. A 2017 Century Farm application is available at the Parish Office or in the back of church. Helping Hands can use whatever supplies you would like to purchase. Some needs are: crayons, chalk, chalk erasers, pencils, pens, markers, spiral notebooks, composition books, copy paper, backpacks. The items can be dropped off at the Parish Office. At this time we are not collecting empty medicine bottles. We will start collecting at a later date and there will be a notice in the bulletin under Helping Hands News. Helping Hands is in need of deck boards. If you, or someone you know would be replacing a deck, please let Helping Hands know ( ). If the deck would need to be dismantled, Helping Hands would do that in exchange for the boards. Two more containers have been loaded and sent off to Jamaica. This is a list of some of the items sent: school desks from a school in Rhinelander, school books from the Merrill & Wausau School Districts and from a Sherwood School, nursing home furniture from a nursing home in Appleton.
