Happy Easter!! I have wonderful memories of Easter! When I was a child the best part was going down to the dining room table and finding an Easter basket, actually it was an Easter nest, filled with jelly beans, candy, and of course a chocolate Easter bunny. A couple of times we received real bunnies for Easter. We would care for them until it was time to let them go. But, on most occasions we received dyed chickens... a blue one, a pink one, a yellow one, a violet one, etc. Each child was responsible for naming his/ her chicken, feeding it and caring for it. When they began to grow we would put them outside under a cage during the day. A couple of times our cat, Louie the hunter, would find a way to flip up the cage and have himself a meal. That was never a pretty site. And poor Louie had to bear the brunt of our grief and anger at losing a chicken or two. When they were too large to manage we took them to our cousins, the Stark s, farm. Mr. Stark always remembered the names of our chickens. So that, when we visited later on he could point them out... there s Fluffy, and here s Gertrude, and there s Sunshine, etc. Another memorable event was going to Mass on Easter Sunday. The church was packed with people celebrating Easter in style. The women and girls in their colorful Easter dresses and brilliant Easter hats and the men and boys in their suitcoats, multicolored shirts and ties all bespoke of springtime, warmth, and new life. This weekend we gather to celebrate the greatest event in human history... the redemption of our lives from the bondage of sin and the hope of everlasting life with God in heaven. The sadness of death gives way to the bright promise of immortality! Christ is risen! The resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the event that inspired the writing of the gospels. The disciples of Jesus had watched as their leader was condemned and crucified. They saw him die on the cross. But when they beheld him in their midst three days later their lives were so powerfully changed and transformed that they were even willing to suffer persecution and death proclaiming the truth about Jesus Christ... what they had witnessed and believed. The Easter story was the beginning of the new life and ministry of the disciples and it was also the promise, the end of the story of their own lives in Christ Jesus. Back at the beginning of Advent I told you how excited I was about Christmas, I felt like a child awaiting with eager anticipation the celebration of that wonderful gift of God His Son who came to live among us. I have been awaiting with eager anticipation this Easter celebration, too. There has been an excitement in the air that is hard to pinpoint... it s an inner liveliness and eagerness for the coming of Jesus anew in my life and in the lives of all of you. May the God of glory through his Son Jesus Christ bless you and your families with peace, love and joy during this Easter season. May you truly come to experience in the depths of your hearts the richness and beauty of God s love and the gift of salvation won for you through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. Happy Easter and God bless you! Fr Bob 2

3 EMBRACE THE Year of Mercy Can you hear it beating? The heart of the Year of Mercy approaches, in Holy Week, Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday. It is a wondrous heart, full of love, a heart that on Good Friday s cross was opened by a lance in a sacred gush of blood and water. Raise your eyes above that pierced heart and behold a face, bruised and bloody. Yet even in that pain there is a majesty and serenity that draws us in. Jesus eyes are closed, but Easter will see them opened again, full of glorious life. Those eyes have gazed at you. They have been following you from the first moment of your life. His lips, so swollen as he hangs upon the cross, have spoken your name, inviting you to follow me. Do you believe that? At the end of your life you will meet those eyes and hear that voice in a vivid and definitive way. You will stand face to face with Jesus. But here and now today Jesus offers us an extraordinary Hour of Mercy. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy he calls us with special intensity to fix our minds and hearts on the celebration of Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Divine Mercy Sunday (the Sunday after Easter). In this sacred season at the heart of this Jubilee Year, Jesus opens to us a fountain of mercy. Let us drink deeply. Let us listen with fresh ears to the readings at Mass and the other Holy Week liturgies, for each word speaks to us of God s mercy. Let us take the opportunity to confess our sins and gratefully receive forgiveness. Let us embrace the Body of Christ in the Eucharist with greater fervor. Let us engage our Lenten devotions and sacrifices with joy. If ever there was a time to avoid sleepwalking through Holy Week, Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday, this is it. From his Palm Sunday entrance into Jerusalem through his Passion, death and Resurrection, enter into the merciful mystery of Jesus sacrifice of love for you. Along the way, may you be inspired to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet, culminating in the celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday on April 3. Watch the Parish bulletin or visit the Diocesan Website ( for Divine Mercy celebrations near you. The Divine Mercy Chaplet: Recited using ordinary rosary beads of five decades. 1. Our Father 2. Hail Mary 3. Apostles Creed 4. On each of the five Our Father beads: Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. 5. On each set of ten Hail Mary beads For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. 6. Conclude with Holy God (Re-peat three times) Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. Be Still and Listen 3 Devotion to the Mercy of God St. Faustina and Pope St. John Paul II The Mercy of God was central to the pontificate of St. John Paul II. To understand this, one must see his profound connection with a humble Polish nun Sr. Faustina Kowalska. In 1931 Jesus appeared to Sr. Faustina in a vision. She saw Him clothed in a white garment with His right hand raised in blessing. His left hand was touching His garment in the area of the heart, from which shone two large rays, one red and the other white. Jesus said to her: Paint an image according to the pattern you see with the signature: Jesus, I trust in You. I desire that this image be venerated throughout the world. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My Mercy. Jesus entrusted special prayers to Sr. Faustina to share with the world, including the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. A Time of Trial Soon the Divine Mercy devotion spread throughout Poland and beyond. But on March 6, 1959, after studying some inaccurate Italian accounts of the visions, the Vatican prohibited spreading the message and devotion. The ban lasted nearly 20 years. A young Polish seminarian in Krakow by the name of Karol Wojtyla had in the 1940s been deeply affected by the story of Sr. Faustina and the Divine Mercy devotion. From the stone quarry in which he worked during the Nazi occupation, he could see the convent cemetery where Sr. Faustina was buried, and he would sometimes visit her grave on the way home. Triumph of Mercy By the 1960s, as Archbishop of Krakow, Wojtyla ordered a complete study of the life and virtues of Sr. Faustina. This concluded with such success that her Process of Beatification was begun in Finally, in April of 1978, at the request of then-cardinal Wojtyla and many others, the Vatican lifted the ban on spreading the message and devotion. Six months later, he was elected Pope. The Image of My Pontificate Pope John Paul II remarked several times that his second encyclical, Rich in Mercy, (Nov. 30, 1980) was profoundly influenced by insights that came through the experiences of Sr. Faustina. Then in June of 1997, he prayed at her tomb in Lagiewniki, Poland and spoke from the heart to her Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy: There is nothing that man needs more than Divine Mercy. And it is a message that is clear and understandable for everyone. Anyone can come here, look at this image of the merciful Jesus, His Heart radiating grace, and hear in the depths of his own soul what Blessed Faustina heard: Fear nothing; I am with you always (Diary, 586). And if this person responds with a sincere heart: Jesus, I trust in You, he will find comfort in all his anxieties and fears.... The message of Divine Mercy has always been near and dear to me. It is as if history had inscribed it in the tragic experience of the Second World War. In those difficult years it was a particular Support and an inexhaustible source of hope which I took with me to the See of Peter and which in a sense forms the image of my Pontificate. continued on next page

4 Be Still and Listen continued. A Saint, a Feast Day, a Holy Death On April 30, 2000, the Sunday after Easter, Pope John Paul II canonized St. Faustina Kowalska and proclaimed that this day would henceforth be celebrated throughout the world as Divine Mercy Sunday. That evening he said to a doctor associated with the canonization process, this is the happiest day of my life. Five years later, precisely on the eve of Divine Mercy Sunday, moments after his personal secretary, Archbishop Stanislaus Dziwisz, had finished celebrating the Vigil Mass for the Feast, Pope John Paul II died, passing from this world into the merciful embrace of Christ. St. John Paul II and St. Faustina, pray for me. Jesus, I trust in You. (Reprinted from the booklet Embracing the Year of Mercy, Diocese of La Crosse, 2015) A Blessed and Holy Easter to ALL From Fr. Bob, Fr. Dan and the Staff at St. Matthew Parish Save the Date Your presence is requested for a CELEBRATION OF GRATITUDE!!! Saturday, April 23 rd, 6:00pm in the school gym Every parishioner has been a part of our dream in making the Angelorum a reality It is time to give thanks, rejoice and celebrate!!! Reserve the date on your calendar; watch the bulletin for further details about our celebration! Year of Mercy and Share Sunday Pope Francis has called us to embrace the Year of Mercy. To quote Pope Francis, It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It may be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty. And let us enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God s mercy. So with a twofold purpose in mind, the Family Life Committee would like to bring Share Sunday to our parish. Share Sunday will help us embrace the Year of Mercy and will provide food that our Circle of Joy will give to those in need. The Circle of Joy is beginning their 45 th year of caring for those in need, through help with food and other necessities of life, in our community. Mark your calendars for the 2 nd weekend of every month, on that weekend we will have, Share Sunday, at all our Masses. Our first Share Sunday will be the weekend of April 9 th and 10 th. On Share Sunday a large basket will be placed in the sanctuary, before the offertory, while the collection is being done, parishioners will be invited to come forward and place their non-perishable food donations in the basket. All donations will be given to the Circle of Joy. What a wonderful opportunity for parents to talk with their children about those who experience hunger on a daily basis and how we are called to be Jesus to others, by feeding the hungry. As adults it is good for us to reflect on how good God has been to us and how we are called to share the gifts God has given us with others. We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy; it is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace. Pope Francis 4
