When we celebrate this season every year we are not merely celebrating an event that happened a long time in the past. We assuredly are celebrating something that began a long time ago with the resurrection of Christ, the event that changed everything. What we are celebrating is nothing less than the salvation of the world, a world that has been, is being, and always will be transformed by the incarnation of God who became man, who suffered, died and rose from the dead in order that we may have eternal life with Him in Heaven! The plan that was set forth by God from the beginning of time is accomplished, done, finished, completed and kaput in the saving work of Jesus Christ, that is, the part that God had to do. For our part, the only thing that God asks us to do is to believe and to behave as if we do indeed believe, and even in this part of the plan we are aided by God. God has given us His Church, that body of Christ on earth, the Church in which we are spiritually nourished. The Church in which we take an active participation in the worship of God our Father, Jesus our Brother and the Holy Spirit our Advocate and then go forth from that worship to keep the mission that has been entrusted to us, to bring the message of Christ to a world that is in such desperate need of the truth of Easter! 3 PASTOR S MESSAGE FIRST HOLY COMMUNION As we all know from personal experience, our church is a very busy place. Masses daily and many on weekends, Baptisms, Marriages, Funerals, Confirmations, Penance Celebrations, personal devotions and prayers and recently Communal Anointing of the Sick. All of these sacramental encounters with God strengthen us and help us to grow in holiness. Our church truly is the House of God and where the People of God encounter the "Living God" in ways that are transformational. Next Saturday we will gather to celebrate our greatest sacrament, the Holy Eucharist, being received for the first time by the children of our parish families. This reception of the Holy Eucharist is a significant and joy filled occasion for all of our larger parish family and for the families of our children. We are "One Body In Christ". This is because the Holy Eucharist is both the center of our spiritual lives and the source of our unity with each other and with God. For over 2,000 years Catholics have gathered to be fed by Word and Sacrament and to be united in Christ as baptized members of His Body. As the Parable of the Vine and the Branches reminds us, united with Christ our Vine, we flourish unattached to Him, we spiritually languish, and die. The immense privilege of being united with Christ in the most intense way possible is what we are sharing with our children. Each family present for the First Holy Communion Mass will be passing on a priceless heritage and a most important family value and practice. Families pass on, form and support faith and, like Christ, each family is itself a spiritual vine supporting the faith of all family members especially our youngest. Participation in the Holy Eucharist should be understood as the most significant moment in the faith life of the family. It should be one that completes the fabric of family prayer, scripture reading, spiritual devotions, love and forgiveness and care for neighbor. The "First Communion" is just that, the first, in a lifetime of Holy Communions that will support and nourish our children spiritually throughout their lives. Families that together participate in the Holy Eucharist faithfully will be blessed with an abundance of love, peace and joy. As important as the food that we share around our tables, is the Holy Eucharist that keeps us spiritually alive and capable of living out our Baptismal promises. We congratulate and are prayerfully united with all of our First Communicants listed below, and their families as they take this most important step in their spiritual development. - Msgr. Michael D. 6 Parish Liturgy Committee: Mother s Day Celebration! GOD BLESS OUR BELOVED MOTHERS! A Mother s love is a reflection of God s love! START YOUR MOTHER S DAY NOVENA TODAY. Yes, as grateful children, we want to remember her, show our love, honor her, cherish her and thank her our dearest Mothers both living and deceased every day of our lives. No matter how long some have gone back to our loving God s embrace, for many of us, Mothers remain very much alive in our hearts, in our thoughts and in our memories. Our dearest Mothers are the most special persons in our lives and God s precious gifts to us. And Mother s Day is a special day to remember them in a very special way and the best time to say how much we love them. We can show our love and appreciation in so many different ways like giving her a bouquet of beautiful roses, treating her to a lavish dinner, etc. Either one will surely express our love and gratitude if the intention is truly coming from the heart. But still the best gift that we can ever give her is uniting her maternal intentions to the HOLY SACRIFICE OF THE MASS. So please enroll your Mother in our 9 consecutive days-novena of Masses from May 15, Monday, through May 23, Tuesday. Envelopes are available at the Credenza Table or ask an Usher for help. Remember, He who gives glory to his mother prepares a treasure for himself. (Sirach 3:4) May Our Blessed Mother Mary protect our Mothers and help us to love, respect and honor our MOTHERS, not only this Mother s Day, but as long as they live. Amen! The enrollment envelope can be placed in the collection baskets or in the novena box located in the front of the church Happy Mother s Day! ALTAR BREAD Do you want a special remembrance for a loved one, living or deceased? The Youth Mass on Sundays at 5 pm needs your help! 7 FROM THE SJA DEVELOPMENT & STEWARDSHIP DIRECTOR IN SUPPORT OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION THE SCHOOL ENDOWMENT FUND The School Endowment Fund was set up and funded by parishioners many years ago to ensure that the school would be passed on to future generations alive and healthy. This past year, we received two estates that were designated to be added to the School Endowment funds. This fund allows us to make ongoing investments in the school s faculty, programs, and infrastructure. The Development Office and the Parish Consultative bodies can only use the net income or interest earned on those gifts. As the assets of the endowment grow each year, so will the annual interest earned. This interest will enable the parish to sustain the many valuable programs of the school, develop and expand programs to meet future needs. THE TUITION ASSISTANCE FUND Even though we are in an affluent area there are always instances where a school family suffers a hardship which places them in a financial crisis such as the loss of a job, divorce, an illness or death in the family. St. Joan of Arc School families who have found themselves in this situation have been able to continue at St. Joan s thanks to the many caring hearts in our parish community who donate the funds to assist school families in need. Individual donations in any amount can be made directly to the tuition assistance fund. THE SCHOLARSHIP FUND Another way you can assist in the advancement of Catholic Education is by setting up a scholarship. A scholarship can be set up in memory of a loved one or in support of a particular educational program. Several examples of scholarships that have been set up in memory of a loved one are the Lisa Crowley Phillips Scholarship, and the Jane M. Johnson Memorial Scholarship. Additionally, we have several scholarships that were set up by the donors to recognize students academic achievements. The Dr. Robert E. Tormey Science Scholarship is awarded to a rising 8th grade student who has had the best overall grades in Science, while another, The Alina Brady Scholarship is awarded to a rising 7th grade student who is academically talented, focused and hard working. The Endowment Fund and these scholarships are a blessing to both the school and the students who receive them. These resources enable St. Joan of Arc School to pass on a strong academic and faith-filled foundation to our youth for their future and for the future of our Catholic faith. Please consider making a donation that will pave a path for the future for our children and our Catholic Faith. You can choose to assist our families in need with tuition assistance or set up a scholarship in memory of a loved one. 8 SJA SCHOOL CAREER DAY SJA hosted its 2nd Annual Career Day on April 25th. Grades Pre-K3-8th heard from two dozen speakers, including SJA alumni Andres Navarro (class of 2004), whose mom, Mrs. Margie Navarro, is the Art teacher at Saint Joan of Arc! A variety of fields were represented from science, medicine, law, aviation, marketing, engineering, business, journalism and more! Students conducted a science experiment, tried on police gear, handled physical therapy tools, played speech therapy games, and asked questions and spoke with different types of professionals. Career Day couldn't have been made possible without the generous support of parents and community service professionals who volunteered their time to make Career Day special. 8 ST. JOAN OF ARC MAY 7

11 SJA LITERACY CLASSES ESSAY COMPETITION As members of the Palm Beach Literacy Coalition, our program here at St. Joan of Arc is invited each year to participate in their programs. One of the events which we take seriously is the annual Essay Contest. The topic for this year was, "Describe Your Life Five Years from Now". Six of our adult learners competed with over six hundred others in Palm Beach County. Alba Mendoza was one of ten chosen to read her essay at a reception held in the Hilton Palm Beach Airport Hotel. Four others, Doris Amaya, Josefina Lee, Maria Rosales, and Jose Rizo received Honorable Mentions. We are proud of those who come to the program here at St. Joan of Arc to better their lives by learning English. We cannot thank enough the dedicated tutors who volunteer their time and concern for those coming to better their lives. Kudos to Adult Learners and tutors. SJA EASTER LUNCHEON The St. Joan of Arc Holiday Fun & Fellowship Ministry organized Easter lunch at Rafina Greek Taverna of Boca Raton. Jean Ordonez, is the key organizer and she is helped by Rita Agustynowicz and Rosemary Schlanger. Rita loves selecting the prayer for our special dinner together and Rosemary loves making sure that table flowers and small gifts reflect the holiday spirit. Rosemary is also our official photographer. She captures expressions of peace and joy at the table. Interestingly, each of our holiday dinner parties have included Grandmothers, Grandfathers, daughters and grandchildren, husbands and wives and individuals who would be eating alone... all have chosen to celebrate the holiday with fellow parishioners at a restaurant. We all leave having new friends at St. Joan of Arc. This ministry plans dinners for Easter, Christmas and Thanksgiving Day. Please join us during our next holiday dinner! MAY 7 ST. JOAN OF ARC 11

BARBARITO Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: During the month of May we celebrate World Communications Day, established after the Second Vatican Council to recognize the great importance of social communication. Since its inception, communication methods have exploded with more of us utilizing social and digital media to communicate. Communication, especially of the Gospel, is at the heart of the special collection the diocese will have on the weekend of May 13 &14. The collection is for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) and Catholic University of America. Half of the CCC collection will fund national communication efforts of the U.S. bishops. The other half stays here in our diocese to fund our local communications projects such as the television Mass, the Florida Catholic newspaper, our diocesan website and electronic newsletters. All of these resources help bring the gospel message to the public square so all can know the love of God. Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., is the national university of the Catholic Church. As the only institution of higher education in the U.S. founded by our bishops and chartered by the Vatican, the university educates clergy, religious, and lay faithful from across the nation. Your support will help the university to expand its impact in preparing the next generation of leadership for our Church and nation. Because of your support of the CCC and Catholic University collections, millions of faithful will have the opportunity to deepen their faith through media resources and Catholic learning. Your generosity is always deeply appreciated. With gratitude for your continued generosity and every prayerful wish, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito Bishop of Palm Beach 12 ST. JOAN OF ARC MAY 7

BAPTISMS Mia Rosella Szymanski Elisa Rosillo Seijas TO LEAVE A LEGACY FOR ST. JOAN OF ARC STEP 1 Gather your information about your assets, including retirement funds, bank accounts and real property. STEP 2 Choose the type of bequest you d like to make. 1. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed. 2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used. (This could be restricted to go into the endowment, a specific ministry, or the building fund.) A bequest can be made in a number of ways: A specific dollar amount. Specific assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible property. Retirement account assets, consisting of any benefits remaining in your retirement plan. A residuary bequest, St. Joan of Arc receives all or a percentage of your estate after all other obligations are met. An existing will or trust can be easily amended to include a gift to St. Joan of Arc without rewriting the entire document. Your attorney can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new bequest while reaffirming the terms of your will. Similarly, an attorney can prepare an amendment to a revocable trust to add St. Joan of Arc. STEP 3 Meet with your estate planning attorney. If you need to create a will or just update your existing document, you ll want to get advice from your estate planning attorney. An attorney can advise you as to the best way to structure your will in order to take care of your loved ones first and then your charitable interests while assuring the best tax benefits. As a charitable, not-for-profit all bequests to St. Joan of Arc are fully deductible for estate tax purposes. STEP 4 Contact us. We acknowledge and welcome donors into our Arc Angel Society. Members are invited to special member events and receive special mailings. (We also recognize and respect the wishes of anyone that wishes to remain anonymous.) Please contact Wendy Horton in the Development Office at (561) or horton_wendy@stjoan.org. We seek to offer an ongoing ministry of comfort to those who are mourning the death of a loved one. We hold special events and programs throughout the year: Harvesting Our Tears, Joyful Again!, Grief Support Pot Luck Suppers, and a Special Mass of Remembrance in November. You are also invited to informal conversations - over a cup of coffee - with members of the parish who are willing to listen and share their own experiences of dealing with grief.
