2 2 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Before the Second Vatican Council in the mid-1960s, Advent had a strong penitential tone, reminiscent of Lent. From as long ago as the fourth century, some Christians began a solemn fast on St. Martin s Day, Nov. 11. This Saint Martin s Lent extended all the way to Christmas, and was widely followed in the dioceses of France and Germany, and in the Middle Ages in England. Fasting was required, and dancing and similar activities were banned for the duration. The fast had a social function, too, assuring that the winter food supplies would stretch into spring. At the Second Vatican Council, some bishops argued that a revival of the long winter s fast would give the Church a chance to establish the message and themes of the Incarnation long before the holiday hubbub took hold. This proposal didn t pass, and Advent emerged as a four-week period of reflection, expectant waiting, and joyful preparation for the coming of the Lord. The season has two principal phases, with the first beginning this Sunday. The second phase commences on December 17, when the liturgy begins to unfold the story of the Savior s coming. Interestingly, the Eastern Church maintains a strongly penitential note in Advent, which is called Winter Lent, The Nativity Fast, or Christmas Lent, and has laws forbidding people to absent themselves from liturgy from Dec. 17 onward. Allí viene y ya está llegando. Tenemos que estar preparados. Pero, cómo prepararnos para la llegada de un rey que es pobre?, de un príncipe que nació entre una mula y un buey?, de un niñito que ya es todo un hombre y además es Dios?, de un pobre bebito que también es juez y señor? He allí el dilema del Adviento cristiano. Es un llamado a vivir la paradoja (contradicción) de un tiempo que está a medias, donde el Reino de los Cielos ya está pero todavía no completamente, pues existe pero no en su plenitud. Es un llamado a buscar en el templo, en el mall, en el barrio, en el hogar, en el trabajo y en el propio corazón, para ver si allí viene el dueño de la casa. Es un llamado a estar atentos y vigilantes porque no sabemos ni cuándo ni como Jesús regresará por nosotros. Pero cuando regrese nos pedirá cuentas y nos abrazará a la misma vez. Porque viene como juez y hermano nuestro, como rey y compañero; como Dios y ser humano. At this point Cummins Ferry Rd makes a sharp right (a house will be on your left). GO STRAIGHT. This is Oregon Rd; stay on this road for 0.8 of a mile. Masses are usually scheduled weeks in advance, so if there is a particular date on which you want the Mass Intention, please make the request well ahead of time. The suggested stipend for each Mass is $5.00.

4 4 FUNERAL PLANNING If anyone is interested in planning your own funeral, please notify the church office ( ) or Pat Logsdon ( ). We will have a workshop and follow the Catholic Funeral guidelines. You can pick your readings and music and consider any special things you might want in your end of life celebration! A copy of this plan will go on file in the parish office. When your time comes to walk happily to Jesus, your family will be able to concentrate on your love and memory and not on the mechanics of your funeral! This is a truly generous gift for each of us to give our families! We will schedule sessions that suit each of you. Be sure to tell us your best day or your best time of day. God bless each of you! 5 5 Martha s Helping Hands Project When you come home from the hospital it can be a stressful time and the last thing on your mind is cooking food. As a parish family we can step up and help. Would you be interested in being a part of a group of parishioners that cook food and deliver it to the parishioner when they come home from the hospital? The goal is to have at least four (4) groups of four (4) to six (6) people to purchase and prepare food at their home. The cost of the food would be your responsibility not the parish. The more parishioners we have involved means more groups. Each group would need a lead person to be the contact for the coordinator. The lead person would be responsible for contacting the members of their group and organizing the menu. If there are dietary restrictions the coordinator would let the leader of the group know. If you are interested in being a part of this please project, either contact Rosa Browning at or call the parish office at and let them know. Pastor s Post by Come, Lord Jesus Visioning Our Parish Future Advent is a perfect time for us to be visioning the future of Saint Andrew Catholic Church. Advent means toward the coming. Advent looks toward the coming of Christ among us. Christ's coming at Christmas extends into the future. That includes our Parish future, our lives together as Saint Andrew Catholic Church. As you know, over the past few months we have been carefully considering a parish plan for the next three years of our lives together. We have done this in a series of five guided discussions. Three Sundays ago, November 13, we invited all to comment on and prioritize into a three-year plan the data that was generated in those five parish discussions guided by Dr. Lori Garkovich from the University of Kentucky. Today I am inviting all of you to come to a presentation of the results next Sunday, December 4, the Second Sunday of Advent in Saint Mary's Hall immediately following the 11:00 AM Mass. We will provide the sandwiches! After the presentation on December 4, we will extend two week period until December 18, the Fourth Sunday of Advent, for further parishioner comment on and refinement of the plan. We are looking toward the coming and building of God's kingdom here among us.
