Reflection of the Week This First Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of a new liturgical year. All the readings during this period of waiting and anticipation concentrate on making us aware that it is time for us to awaken our lives as Christians. Jesus opens our Gospel Reading from St. Mark by saying Be watchful! Be alert! and closes it with an intense Watch! For many Advent and Christmas are times of light, whether it is the light of the candles on Advent wreaths or the lights on a tree or the festive lights which decorate many houses and businesses. Jesus brings light into our worlds, but we must allow this light to permeate our own lives, to enter into the dark and sinful parts of our lives to illuminate and cleanse them. This should be a time of renewed prayer and penance which truly prepares us to watch for the Lord, not just at Christmas but throughout our lives. There is a natural wonder among children at this time of year, but sometimes as we age, we lose that sense as if we are sleeping. It is time to awaken. Our minds may say Let go but our spirituality tells us to Awaken. We are filled with spiritual depths. It is time to seek them, find them, and awaken them. It is Advent, time for us to awaken and become aware of the gifts of love we have received from God and others. Or as Jesus reminds us: Watch. Copyright

Children have fun opening the doors and windows keyed to the days counting down to Christmas. Behind each door is a picture related to the Christmas mystery, perhaps a scripture verse or saying, but more and more these days something totally unconnected to religious life, like a small toy or a chocolate treat, appears instead. The Advent calendar is not very old as traditions go. We can trace it back to German-speaking Christians, both Protestant and Catholic. Lutherans might have originated the custom by placing chalk marks on doors starting December 1, lighting candles every day, or placing a new religious picture on the wall each day during Advent. The oldest known hand-made calendar goes back to 1851, and the first printed ones appeared in 1908 in Germany with Bible verses behind the doors. By far the most interesting calendar is a building, the town hall (Rathaus) of Gengenbach in Germany s Black Forest. Every year the townspeople invite an illustrator of children s books to create twenty-four paintings or motifs for each of the twentyfour main windows of the building. Every night the people gather to see a new window opened and illuminated. Very few commercial Advent calendars pay much attention to the core values of our liturgical calendar: the pivotal place of Sunday, the importance of Advent feasts like Saint Lucy and Saint Nicholas, and the clear shift in tone on December 17 from Advent longing and preparation toward imminent hope in Christ s coming. Viene del latín y quiere decir Allí viene o Ya está llegando. Pero, de quién hablamos cuando proclamamos adviento? Del Rey de la Gloria?, del Príncipe de la Paz?, del Hijo del Dios Altísimo?, del Salvador de Israel? Sí, sí, sí y otra vez, sí, pero más todavía del Hijo del Hombre, del niñito de María. Allí viene y ya está llegando. Tenemos que estar preparados. Pero cómo prepararnos para la llegada de un rey que es pobre?, de un príncipe que nació entre una mula y un buey? de un niñito que ya es todo un hombre y además es Dios? He allí el dilema del Adviento cristiano. Es un llamado a vivir la paradoja de un tiempo que está a medias, donde el Reino de los Cielos ya existe pero no en su plenitud. Es un llamado a buscar en el templo, en el mall, en el barrio, en el hogar y en el propio corazón, para ver si allí viene el dueño de la casa. Es un llamado a estar atentos y vigilantes. The Respect Life Commission of the Diocese of Reno is cosponsoring three presentations at the annual Diocesan Conference in Sparks. Richard Doerflinger, who retired last year as the USCCB s Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, prepared policy statements and testimony on abortion, euthanasia, and other medical-moral issues for 36 years. He has published in many journals, and his syndicated column is distributed by the National Catholic News Service. He is an Associate Scholar the Charlotte Lozier Institute and a Fellow at the University of Notre Dame s Center for Ethics and Culture. He will present the following presentations on January 6, 2018: (1) Assisted Suicide: The Ethics, the Law and the Dangers, (2) Our Rights of Conscience Under Attack, and (3) Shall we Manufacture of Children?
