2 2 Jubilee Year of Mercy When religious people complained that Jesus welcomed and ate with sinners, Jesus challenged them to change their image of God. Imagine God as a shepherd, abandoning ninety-nine obedient sheep to seek the stupid one who got lost. Imagine God as a distraught woman (could religious men imagine that?), losing something and turning the house upside down to find it. Imagine God as an unconditionally forgiving father granting an unworthy son an undeserved feast. Then Jesus added a character that religious people might imagine, even recognize, all too well. The elder son stayed home; obeyed the father s will; then exploded with rage and judgment and refused to join his brother s welcome-home feast. This Jubilee Year of Mercy asks, which half of Jesus audience do I belong to? How do I imagine God? How can I become like the searching shepherd, the sweeping woman, the forgiving father? How else can I expect a welcome to Jesus feast of forgiveness? -Fr. La imagen de Dios como un pastor que abandona a noventa y nueve ovejas para buscar a la más despistada que se perdió. La imagen de Dios en una mujer preocupada ( podrían los hombres religiosos imaginarlo?) que perdió algo y pone la casa patas arriba para encontrarlo. La imagen de Dios como un padre que incondicionalmente perdona a un hijo indigno y además celebra su regreso con una fiesta. Luego Jesús añade a otra persona con quien las personas religiosas podrían de alguna manera reconocer y, también todos nosotros. El hijo mayor que estaba en casa, un hijo obediente a la voluntad de su padre, luego reaccionan con rabia y juicio y, se niegan a unirse a recibir en casa a su hermano. Sin duda que en este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia se nos pregunta con cuál audiencia te identificas? Cómo tú te imaginas a Dios? Cómo puedo hacerme como el pastor y la mujer preocupados, el padre comprensivo? Masses are usually scheduled weeks in advance, so if there is a particular date on which you want the Mass Intention, please make the request well ahead of time. The suggested stipend for each Mass is $5.00. I would like to thank Father Al and all of my church family for the visits, cards, and calls following my recent surgery and ongoing recovery. Sixty Berea College choir members will be in attendance, so extra portions of all dishes will be needed. 9/11 INTERFAITH MEMORIAL SERVICE Saint Paul Church, West Short Street, Lexington Sunday, September 11, 4:00 PM On the 15th Anniversary of the Terrorist Attacks, Rabbi Moshe Smolkin will chant the Prayer for the Fallen. Interfaith leaders and community will participate. After the service, all will process to Phoenix Park where a wreath will be laid at the monuments for fallen police and firefighters. Berea College Concert Choir September 17 during the 4:30 PM Saint Andrew Mass September 17 at the Parish Picnic The Berea College Concert Choir is a vocal ensemble of about 60 undergraduate men and women chosen from the Berea College student body. The choir performs several concerts each year both on and off campus. Repertoire consists of both sacred and secular choral literature. The conductor of the choir is Dr. Stephen Bolster, Mary W. 5 5 From the Finance Council As Finance Council Chairwoman, I would like to let the people of the Church know what we as Finance Council, have done to arrive at a budget for the year 2016/2017. Mary Jane Trimble, our Business Manager, compiled all the data for the budget from the requests received from the various committees. There are many items for which we have no control, the Diocese informs each parish what those expenses will be and they must be budgeted; i.e Fr. Al's salary, insurance increases for all covered, increases in property insurance, and other items. When we used the required figures and the requested amounts, the budget came up with a shortfall of nearly $20,000. After a small group went over every line item in the budget, we proposed our final budget. Nearly every area of the budget was reduced, to be fair to all. We made cuts in supplies, books, subscriptions, maintenance, and hopefully we will have a mild winter with little snow to be removed. The Council agreed to meet once again in 60 days to revisit the actual income and expenses which have occurred since the budget was passed. If at that time, income is lower than needed or expenses have risen, we will have to adjust the cuts accordingly. I believe in the members of this wonderful parish and I pray that all will go well with our budget without further cuts. Everyone should be proud of our Parish Home, and do whatever they can to support it. Thank you for all of your support. Al DeGiacomo During September After Mass on Sunday, I will get in my car and begin a two-day road trip to Boston, Massachusetts. Believe it or not, this will be my first visit home in almost four years. The occasion is the wedding of my Goddaughter, Margaret, on Friday, September 16, in Salem, right on the coast, close to where I taught at Bishop Fenwick High School for many years. The funny part of the story is that Margaret's mother, Joy Prato, is a native of Danville, a childhood parishioner of Saints Peter and Paul Church, and a former Kentucky Dominican nun. I often tell Joy that she and I traded places, she in Boston, I in Harrodsburg. (Yes, I will be con-celebrating the wedding Mass.) Anyway, this wedding will give me an opportunity to see my cousins and close friends from days gone by. Yes, I will be flying back to Lexington on Saturday in time for the 4:30 Mass here during which the Berea College Concert Choir will sing and, of course, for Confirmation the following morning. On Sunday afternoon I fly back to Boston to conclude my visit and begin the return drive to Harrodsburg, visiting friends in New York and Pennsylvania along the way. Father Al Christmas Bazaar November 18 & 19 We are asking everyone in the parish to start thinking about how they can contribute to make this a successful bazaar. This year, we are asking each of you to craft an item, make some ornaments, and/or put together a theme basket. We would like for these things to be made at home individually, as a family, or get together in small groups. Then bring in your donations starting October 20 th. There will be forms in the foyer for you to sign up for baskets. We will be happy to offer theme ideas. Also, we will be available to assist you if you gather your items and need help putting the basket together. We are in need of handmade ornaments, wreaths, and donations for both the raffle and silent auction. We will also be doing a children s table where items will be available for children to purchase gifts for their parents and siblings. Contributions for this table would be greatly appreciated.
