3 Page 3 RELIGIOUS LIBERTY UNDER ATTACK A Concrete Example For decades, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) has carried out the commitment of the U.S. Bishops to serve and advocate for refugees, asylees, and other forced migrants, immigrants, and other people on the move. Special concern is given to the most vulnerable among these populations, such as the victims of human trafficking. This commitment is rooted in the Gospel mandate that every person is to be welcomed by the disciple as if he or she were Christ Himself and in the right of every human being to pursue, without constraint, the call to holiness. MRS developed years of expertise in actively working to end human trafficking and protect those adults and children who have been exploited through trafficking. In 2006, MRS s Anti- Trafficking Services Program (ATSP) specifically began administering a federal program to provide intensive case management to foreign national victims of human trafficking identified in the U.S. and its territories. In 2010, through its network of subcontracting agencies, ATSP helped survivors of human trafficking from 64 countries, with the largest number of survivors from India, Mexico, Thailand, the Philippines, and Haiti. Survivors had been trafficked on farms, in hotels and casinos, in private homes, in spas, and in other industries for the purposes of forced labor and/or sex trafficking. However, despite many years of excellent performance by MRS in administering contract services for victims of human trafficking, in 2011, the federal government changed its contract specifications to require MRS to provide or refer for contraceptive and abortion services in violation of Catholic teaching. The federal government refused to award a grant to MRS despite MRS s earning a higher objective score from the government s independent grant evaluators than two others that were awarded grants. And those two scored so low that they were deemed unqualified. Religious institutions should not be disqualified from a government contract based on religious belief, and they do not somehow lose their religious identity or liberty upon entering such contracts. And yet a federal court in Massachusetts, turning religious liberty on its head, has since declared that the First Amendment requires such a disqualification that the government somehow violates religious liberty by allowing Catholic organizations to participate in contracts in a manner consistent with their beliefs on contraception and abortion. Is our most cherished freedom truly under threat? Among many current challenges, the federal government has discriminated against Catholic humanitarian services based on their religious beliefs, even when those beliefs had no impact on performance. Religious liberty is more than freedom of worship; it includes our ability to make our contribution to the common good of all Americans without having to compromise our faith. Without religious liberty properly understood, all of us suffer, especially victims of human trafficking. What can you do to ensure the protection of religious freedom? The U.S. Bishops have called for a Fortnight for Freedom from June 21 to July 4. Please visit for more information on this important time of prayer, education, and action in support of religious liberty!

4 July 8, 2012 Page 4 A Message from our Pastor Dear Parishioners of SS. Peter and Paul, Thank you! Thank you to all those who participated in the Fortnight for Freedom either with us here at the parish or at home. Let us continue to pray for the rescinding of the HHS mandate. Wenker Hall As you can tell, work on Wenker Hall is almost complete. The only phase left, the decorative appointments on the top of the tower and placement of a cross, will be completed later in the summer. Branding Initiative You will begin seeing our new branding initiative here at SS. Peter and Paul. Our parish team worked with our school s marketing team and Washburn Graphics to design a new logo to be used on all of her signs, stationary, bulletin, webpage, etc. so that the parish is easily recognized and identified. You will now know right away when the information you are getting comes from the parish. Enjoy your summer! In Christ, Fr. Thomas A. Milota 2012 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) Parish Progress Report as of: Friday, June 29, CMAA Goal...$181, Total Donors...1,035 Total Pledged... $221, Goal Percentage..122% Come celebrate Mass with us Over 110 of our school and Religious Education students will come together this week to learn more about their faith in the summer program Totus Tuus. Two secular newspapers gave complete accounts of the miracle as witnessed by their reporters. Although the number of Masses we are able to offer is substantial, our parish has grown to 4,000+ families necessitating limits to accommodate everyone. In order to make dates available to all parishioners, and to be able to offer Mass intentions for the recently deceased, the following policy will become effective immediately: A limit of three annual Mass intentions will be allowed per calendar year per person requesting. In addition, for the recently deceased, a maximum of three Masses will be set during the first calendar year of the death, and two Masses during the following year. These intentions are set only by the family of deceased. For those wishing to renew marriage vows, this may be done during any Mass, even if the intention for that Mass is already taken. Please simply contact the Parish Office at least one month in advance. The stipend for Masses is $10. The Diocese of Joliet will also accept Mass intentions if your request for Masses at the parish exceeds the annual limit. Please consider supporting our Diocesan retired and missionary priests. If you would like to set more intentions than can be offered at SS. Peter and Paul, please ask how these stipends can be offered by the Missions. If you have any questions, please call the Parish Office at MOMS GROUP The MOMs (Meeting Other Mothers) Group brings together Catholic mothers committed to family and community service. We meet monthly for support, friendship and affirmation of our role as Catholic mothers. Our fellowship opportunities include playgroups, meals for moms, rosaries, service activities, moms night out and children s activities. Please ssppmoms@gmail.com for more information on group events. MOMs Group is always excited to welcome new members! TRANSITIONAL HOUSING MINISTRY The SSPP Transitional Housing Ministry cannot help but relate our joyous celebration of Independence Day to the happiness and thankfulness of the many once homeless families who are now self-supporting because of our program. We reflect on the freedom and happiness they feel and thank God that, through the generous support of our parish and their own very hard work in our program, they have achieved the blessing of self-sufficiency. For any information about THM, call Jack Flowers at Who s up for some Baseball?? How about an evening at the ballgame with your parish family? Ss. Peter and Paul is heading to the Kane County Cougars Game on Monday, July 16 th in Geneva. Reserved seats are $5.00 each. Game is at 6:30 pm, doors open at 5:30 pm. For more information, or to reserve your tickets, contact Mike at or at mbrummond@sspeterandpaul.net. Transportation is on your own.

11 Page 11 FORMING CONSCIENCES FOR FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has developed a document to assist Catholics in understanding their political responsibilities based on church teachings. Continuing this week, we present this document in its entirety through a series of weekly bulletin articles presenting a portion of the document each week. We hope you find this document helpful as you prepare for the upcoming elections in November. Please note: The entire document can be downloaded from the USCCB website in PDF format at Part II Applying Catholic Teaching to Major Issues: A Summary of Policy Positions of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops 63. Politics is about values and issues as well as candidates and officeholders. In this brief summary, we bishops call attention to issues with significant moral dimensions that should be carefully considered in each campaign and as policy decisions are made in the years to come. As the descriptions below indicate, some issues involve principles that can never be violated, such as the fundamental right to life. Others reflect our judgment about the best way to apply Catholic principles to policy issues. No summary could fully reflect the depth and details of the positions taken through the work of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). While people of good will may sometimes choose different ways to apply and act on some of our principles, Catholics cannot ignore their inescapable moral challenges or simply dismiss the Church s guidance or policy directions that flow from these principles. For a more complete review of these policy directions and their moral foundations, see the statements listed at the end of this document. Human Life 64. Our 1998 statement Living the Gospel of Life declares, Abortion and euthanasia have become preeminent threats to human life and dignity because they directly attack life itself, the most fundamental good and the condition for all others (no. 5). Abortion, the deliberate killing of a human being before birth, is never morally acceptable and must always be opposed. Cloning and destruction of human embryos for research or even for potential cures are always wrong. The purposeful taking of human life by assisted suicide and euthanasia is not an act of mercy, but an unjustifiable assault on human life. Genocide, torture, and the direct and intentional targeting of noncombatants in war or terrorist attacks are always wrong. 65. Laws that legitimize any of these practices are profoundly unjust and immoral. Our Conference supports laws and policies to protect human life to the maximum degree possible, including constitutional protection for the unborn and legislative efforts to end abortion and euthanasia. We also promote a culture of life by supporting laws and programs that encourage childbirth and adoption over abortion and by addressing poverty, providing health care, and offering other assistance to pregnant women, children, and families. 66. The USCCB calls for greater assistance for those who are sick and dying, through health care for all and effective and compassionate palliative care. We recognize that addressing this complex issue effectively will require collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors and across party lines. Policies and decisions regarding biotechnology and human experimentation should respect the inherent dignity of human life from its very beginning, regardless of the circumstances of its origin. Respect for human life and dignity is also the foundation for essential efforts to address and overcome the hunger, disease, poverty, and violence that take the lives of so many innocent people. 67. Catholics must also work to avoid war and to promote peace. Nations should protect the dignity of the human person and the right to life by finding more effective ways to prevent conflicts, to resolve them by peaceful means, and to promote reconstruction and reconciliation in the wake of conflicts. Nations have a right and obligation to defend human life and the common good against terrorism, aggression, and similar threats. This duty demands effective responses to terror, moral assessment of and restraint in the means used, respect for ethical limits on the use of force, a focus on the roots of terror, and fair distribution of the burdens of responding to terror. The Church has raised fundamental moral concerns about preventive use of military force. 8 Our Church honors the commitment and sacrifice of those who serve in our nation s armed forces, and also recognizes the moral right to conscientious objection to war in general, a particular war, or a military procedure. 68. Even when military force can be justified as a last resort, it should not be indiscriminate or disproportionate. Direct and intentional attacks on noncombatants in war and terrorist acts are never morally acceptable. The use of weapons of mass destruction or other means of warfare that do not distinguish between civilians and soldiers is fundamentally immoral. The United States has a responsibility to work to reverse the spread of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, and to reduce its own reliance on weapons of mass destruction by pursuing progressive 68. The United States has a responsibility to work to reverse the spread of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, and to reduce its own reliance on weapons of mass destruction by pursuing progressive nuclear disarmament. It also must end its use of anti-personnel landmines and reduce its predominant role in the global arms trade. The war in Iraq confronts us with urgent moral choices. We support a responsible transition that ends the war in a way that recognizes the continuing threat of fanatical extremism and global terror, minimizes the loss of life, and addresses the humanitarian crisis in Iraq, the refugee crisis in the region, and the need to protect human rights, especially religious freedom. This transition should reallocate resources from war to the urgent needs of the poor. 8 See Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, no. 501.

12 Page 12 BAPTISM INFORMATION What about Baptism? Do you want to have your child baptized? What a joy it is to experience the gift of new life that God gives to His people. Immediately the mystery of God s love is revealed in the mystery of His creative power which He allows Christian parents to share. Ss. Peter and Paul Parish rejoices with all parents beholding this tremendous gift. Since the Sacrament of Baptism is essential to the Christian life, Ss. Peter and Paul Parish abides by all the norms set forth by the Catholic Church in administering the Sacrament of Baptism. We want the baptism of your child to bear the full Grace that Christ bestows in this sacrament and we do not want any obstacles which would be created by not following these norms. These norms are laid down by the Roman Catholic Church and are age old and time tested norms. We ask all parents to understand the sacred nature of this sacrament which these norms protect and therefore the inability for Ss. Peter and Paul Parish to compromise these norms without endangering this sacred character. The code of canon law declares: Baptism, the gate to the sacraments, necessary for salvation in fact or at least in intention, by which men and women are freed from their sins, are reborn as children of God and, configured to Christ by an indelible character, are incorporated in the Church, is validly conferred only by washing with true water together with the required form of words. 1 Further, in order to celebrate the sacrament of baptism licitly the priest must have a founded hope that the infant will be brought up in the Catholic religion; if such a hope is altogether lacking, the baptism is to be put off according to the prescription of the law and the parents are to be informed of the reason. 2 Please note that this is a direct quotation from the Code of Canon Law which is the universal law of the Roman Catholic Church. This well-founded hope is manifested not simply by the parents statements but also by their actions. The parents manifest this founded hope when they attend Mass regularly and seek an on-going relationship with the Church. 1 CIC 1983, canon CIC 1983, canon 868,2. Godparents When choosing godparents, it behooves the couple to be quite selective. The purpose of the godparent is to guide the child in the ways of the faith so that they might reach heaven. The Code of Canon Law explains that the godparent is one who will help the baptized to lead a Christian life in harmony with baptism, and to fulfill faithfully the obligations connected with it. This godparent must: Have completed the sixteenth year. 3 Be a Catholic who has received their first communion and the Sacrament of Confirmation. 4 Lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken. 5 Not be bound by any canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared. 6 Not be the father or the mother. 7 A life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken means someone who is practicing their faith weekly, believes what the Church believes, is validly married in the Church or living a chaste single life and has no other obstacles to being a good Catholic example of Christian life. A person of another Christian denomination or other religion cannot be a godparent; however, a Christian person of another Christian denomination may serve as a Christian witness which is not a godparent and whose name does not appear on the baptismal certificate. 8 A Catholic cannot be a Christian witness. Any Catholic party is bound by the laws which govern godparents, cf. above. An individual who has left the Catholic faith cannot be a Christian witness because they have freely chosen no longer to live the Catholic faith. Parents may choose to have only one godparent. If the parents choose to have two godparents, one must be male and one female. 9 The relationship of two godparents emulates spiritually the parenthood of the biological parents. Just as it is impossible to have two biological parents who are of the same sex so is it impossible to have two godparents of the same sex. 3 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1. 5 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 7 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 9 CIC 1983, canon CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 6 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 8 CIC 1983, canon 874, 2 In order to avoid any embarrassment on your part, it is advisable that you contact the parish office prior to choosing your godparents. Your godparents will be asked to have their parish priest fill out a godparents form testifying that they fulfill the canonical requirements. SSPP offers a Baptism Preparation Class for parents on either the 1st OR 2nd Monday of each month beginning at 7:30 PM in the St. Paul Center for the New Evangelization (formerly called Pastoral Hall). Our next class is Monday, July 9. If this is your first child, you MUST attend a class before receiving a date for your baby s baptism. (Both mom and dad are asked to attend. Godparents are also encouraged to attend.) Please sign up for the class by calling the Parish Office, (Your family should be registered with the parish in order to have your child baptized.) If you have attended a class within the last 10 years (at any parish) you need not re-attend. If you attended at Ss. Peter and Paul, simply call the office to schedule your baby s baptism and provide the date you attended; if you attended at another parish, you will be asked to provide a letter of verification. Generally, we baptize at SSPP each Sunday of the month, (except the 2nd Sunday), at 2 PM. We also schedule baptisms on the 2nd Sunday of each month during the 11:00 AM Chapel Mass or the 12:30 PM Church Mass. (The only exception is if a special Mass or event is scheduled by the parish.) Because baptism is meant to be a celebration of the community, we DO NOT schedule private baptisms. Also, we make every effort to limit the number of children baptized at our group ceremony to six and at Mass to two. Please check with the Parish Office to make certain the date you want is available before making plans with your family. The offering to the church for a baptism is $ Couples may pay when they attend the Baptismal Preparation class or they can send payment to the parish office. Required paperwork MUST be submitted to the parish office no later than ten (10) business days prior to the baptismal date, or your date will be rescheduled. This includes all necessary information regarding family records and godparents. A sponsor certificate must be provided by each godparent who belongs to a different parish. The proper sponsor certificate for SSPP will be distributed at our preparation classes and may also be downloaded from our parish website. Christian witnesses are most welcome to celebrate with the family and community, but please note they are not recorded as sponsors on the baptismal certificate or in the baptismal register. Thank you for your cooperation and may Almighty God bless you and your family.
