The first Sunday in February, the 5 th, is Boy Scout Sunday. Members of Troup 282 will read the lessons, greet at our three entrances, bring the elements forward to the altar, and collect the offering. It is always an honor to have the young gentlemen and their supervisors with us, as they are dressed in their uniforms, reminding us how wonderful it is that Trinity supports Troup 282. The Absalom Jones Celebration will be at St. Augustine s Church on Monday, the 13 th. Great music, preaching and celebration will take place from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Saturday, the 18 th of February offers two choices to help us to get out of the box. If you re into chopping or peeling, the Trinity Sous Chefs (or the chop-chop group) is for you. On the other hand, if you d like to learn more about welcoming people to Trinity, then join our Trinity group going down to Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral to hear the Rev. Canon Stephanie Spellers, the Presiding Bishop s Canon for Evangelism, and evangelist Boren Headington, from the Diocese of Dallas, for the Evangelism Seminar. This event will help and show examples on how to welcome new people to Trinity and the Diocese of West Missouri. The chop-chop group meets at 8:30 AM at Trinity to drive down to the Community Kitchen. Talk to Tom Waddell for more information. Those going down to the cathedral for the Evangelism Seminar, which is free, will gather together by 8:45 AM at Trinity for the 9:30 AM till 12:30 PM event. Please register for this event (at no charge) at: diowestmo.org, check about us and go down the list and find events. Follow the subjects down to Evangelism Workshop, and there you can register.

2 February 25 is the last Saturday before Ash Wednesday, so Trinity will celebrate its annual Mardi Gras Party, beginning with social hour at 6 PM, with dinner at about or near 6:30 PM. Look further in this edition for more info by Barbara Leabo. Is not this the time we have white elephant gifts to share? I thought we had a good Sunday (January 22), when Bishop Marty and wife Donna made their annual visit to Trinity. It was nice to hear the bishop preach about Peter, Andrew, James and John s risk taking following Jesus call to be fishers of people. Thank you for the variety of foods that was offered at the reception, including the wonderful white cake, plus flowers for Mrs. Field to take home. The bishop was willing to spend some time with us after most of us were finished eating, and then the Vestry members moved up to the Truman Library, where we chatted for about 35 minutes. All in all, it was a good day. I think it is appropriate for us to give ourselves a pat on our backs for a good day. Now on to the Annual Meeting, January 29; no football games; so come and celebrate our 173 rd Annual Meeting after the 9:30 aam service. Ash Wednesday is March 1, just around the corner, with two services: 12:10 and 7:00 PM. Mark your calendars as we begin the season of Lent. God s peace to all of you. Fr. Russ SENIOR WARDEN REPORT I have enjoyed serving as Senior Warden this year. I am very grateful for your support and prayers. The AED, thanks to Gary, has been installed on the south wall of the Parish Hall. Two parishioners have been trained and three more will be trained on January 28. Please note there is nothing to be placed on the shelf directly below the AED nor is the cabinet to be opened unless needed. It is not a toy. The annual meeting is January 29 with a lunch to follow. Vicky sends thanks to all for getting the reports in as requested. Vox Liminese Choir used the piano for the first time January 17 in a practice session in preparation for their concert January 29, 5:00 PM at Trinity. The Vestry decided to have a small reception following the Choirs presentation. Therefore I'm asking for help again. As you are preparing something to share for the lunch following the Annual Meeting think of a finger type food to share at this reception. It will be another opportunity for us to show our love for the community and to the choir members. Who knows maybe Dale may be able to convince some to come and sing at our services. I hope that many will attend this concert. A gracious thank you was received from St. Mary's church for the many bags of Christmas dinners we collected and delivered to the food cupboard. It allowed many families in the McCoy neighborhood to have a better Christmas dinner. When you are visiting with family, friends and neighbors please let it be known that Trinity is very much involved with providing food through St. Mary's food bank. We don't do enough spreading of the good things that Trinity does, so don't be bashful let it be known by you just how wonderful we really are. Our tree of warmth items has been given to three different grade schools in Jackson County. So

3 now Trinitarians can say we have helped in keeping some children clothed with warm things. Scout Sunday is February 5. Let us welcome these young people, their families and the Scout leaders with the traditional trinity welcome. I expect some of you will purchasing pancake day tickets from them. Evangelism training workshops will be held at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral February 18, 9:00-3:00. This precedes the major event of the visit of the Presiding Bishop May 6 at Kansas City power and Light Stage, 12:00-3:00. There is no cost for the workshop but please register by logging onto the diocesan website. More information will come later regarding the Presiding Bishop's visit. I will be helping the planning for this event. Vestry' day with Bishop Field will be March 4 at St. Paul's church Kansas City. This is for everyone in a leadership role. More information will be on the Diocesan web site soon. We need to start thinking about a visitor's committee with a special focus on the residents that will be moving into the townhouses being built across the street. Your thoughts and ideas will be greatly welcomed. Meals on wheels drivers and their board of directors are in our church at least once a week and sometime more often if Jill runs short on delivery people. Let us consider a "meals on Wheels" on a future Sunday in order to recognize the important work each does in caring for those persons that are unable to prepare their meals. Think warmth and it will soon be here. Shirley McCarty Senior Warden Trinity Episcopal Church, Independence BOY SCOUT TROOP 282 The Scouts and leaders have been busy helping volunteers at the Vaile Mansion and Bingham-Waggoner House put all the Christmas decorations in storage. They made lots of trips up and down the stairs. They recently spent the weekend at the Salt Mines in Hutchinson, KS, learning about mining. Of course, the big news is it's almost PANCAKE DAY!! February 28th is the date, mark your calendars. Pancakes will be served from 6:30 AM until 7:30 PM. You can buy 3 tickets and have breakfast, lunch, and dinner! This event helps the troop with finances so they are able to go on trips, etc. Please come and enjoy the day with us. Tickets are $5.00 each. PANCAKE DAY TUESDAY FEBRUARY 28, 2017 Shrove Tuesday ALL YOU CAN EAT (Pancakes, Sausage, Coffee and Orange Drink) From 6:00 AM to 7:30 PM Cost: $5.00 per person Please plan to come and help support your scout troop s fund-raiser to allow the troop to keep putting on the scouting program for the youth of today. Just remember the youth of today is the leaders of tomorrow. THE ORDER OF THE DAUGHTERS OF THE KING February's meeting will be Wednesday, Feb. 1st at 7:00 PM. Beginning this month we will be sharing the readings in Forward Day By Day. Shirley McCarty will be discussing January's Day by Day. Please join us even if you haven't read all the readings. February's Forward Day by Day features writings by Minda Cox. Minda is the daughter of the Rev. Cathy Cox and a member of the Diocese of West Missouri. Learn more about her on mindacox.net. She is quite interesting.

4 The Daughters will soon begin working as servers the Community Kitchen, as soon as we find out which day. We will work one day a month and are looking forward to doing that service. Beginning March 7th at 10:00 AM, we will have Quiet Time every Tuesday. It's a time for individual prayer, meditation, and reflection for all who join us. annual scholarship funds. ABSALOM JONES CELEBRATION SERVICE The Diocese of West Missouri will celebrate Feast of Absalom Jones, Priest on Monday, February 13, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church. The Rt. Rev. Martin S. Field, Bishop of West Missouri, will be the Celebrant and Pastor Tina Harris, Grand Avenute Temple UMC - Kansas City, MO, will be the preacher. The celebration will freature African drumming by the Traditional Music Society of Kansas City, fabulous preaching, wonderful community and will be followed by a reception. Information on Absalom Jones: Absalom Jones, born a slave in 1746 in Delaware, is the first person of African descent to be ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church. After an incident in 1792 where the black membership of St. George's Methodist Episcopal Church was ousted from the congregation, Absalom Jones along with his friend Richard Allen and the other black members departed. Some historians refer to this incident as a turning point in the creation of the Black Church in America. In 1794, the Free African Society, which was founded in 1787, was admitted as St. Thomas' African Episcopal Church, a Church that still exists today. Jones was ordained a deacon in 1795 and a priest in Throughout his ministry, Jones was a staunch abolitionist and community leader. FYI - BOOK SALE AAUW (American Association of University Women) is having their Annual Used Book Sale on March 2, 3, and 4 at the Independence Center (upper level in front of Macys) from 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM. There will be books in almost every category you can imagine.
