Who can divine the will of the Lord? The reasoning of mortals are unsure and our intentions unstable; for a perishable body presses down the soul, and this tent of clay weighs down the teeming mind. It is hard enough for us to work out what is on earth, laborious to know what lies within our reach; who, then, can discover what is in the heavens? As for your intention, who could have learnt it, had you not granted Wisdom and sent your holy spirit from above? Thus have the paths of those on earth been straightened and men been taught what pleases you, and saved, by Wisdom. The Word of the Lord Responsorial Psalm Ps 89: R. v.1 (R.) In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge. 1. You turn men back into dust and say: Go back, sons of men. To your

3 eyes a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone, no more than a watch in the night. (R.) 2. You sweep men away like a dream, like grass which springs up in the morning. In the morning it springs up and flowers: by evening it with ers and fades. (R.) 3. Make us know the shortness of our life that we may gain wisdom of heart. Lord, relent! Is your anger for ever? Show pity to your servants. (R.) 4. In the morning, fill us with your love; we shall exult and rejoice all our days. Let the favour of the Lord be upon us: give success to the work of our hands. (R.) Second Reading Phlm 9-10, A reading from the letter of St Paul to Philemon This is Paul writing, an old man now and, what is more, still a prisoner of Christ Jesus. I am appealing to you for a child of mine, whose father I became while wearing these chains: I mean Onesimus. I am sending him back to you, and with him I could say a part of my own self. I should have liked to keep him with me; he could have been a substitute for you, to help me while I am in the chains that the Good News has brought me. However, I did not want to do anything without your consent; it would have been forcing your act of kindness, which should be spontaneous. I know you have been deprived of Onesimus for a time, but it was only so that you could have him back for ever, not as a slave any more, but something much better than a slave, a dear brother; especially dear to me, but how much more to you, as a blood-brother as well as a brother in the Lord. So if all that we have in common means anything to you, welcome him as you would me. The Word of the Lord Gospel Acclamation Ps 118:135 Alleluia, alleluia! Let your face shine on your servant, and teach me your laws. Alleluia! Gospel Lk 14:25-33 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke Great crowds accompanied Jesus on his way and he turned and spoke to them. If any man comes to me without hating his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too, he cannot be my disciple. Anyone who does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. And indeed, which of you here, intending to build a tower, would not first sit down and work out the cost to see if he had enough to complete it? Otherwise, if he laid the foundation and then found himself unable to finish the work, the onlookers would all start making fun of him and saying, Here

4 is a man who started to build and was unable to finish. Or again, what king marching to war against another king would not first sit down and consider whether with ten thousand men he could stand up to the other who advanced against him with twenty thousand? If not, then while the other king was still a long way off, he would send envoys to sue for peace. So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions. The Gospel of the Lord Communion Antiphon I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. NEW MEMBERS APPEAL At Masses this weekend we will be appealing for new members to assist with our work in helping the needy. There are return slips and pencils in the pews and boxes marked VINNIES in both foyers for you to place the return slips. Please note that an expression of interest does not indicate a firm commitment on your part and we will be in touch with you over the next month to discuss your area of interest. Thanking you in anticipation and for your generous support in the past. Peter Gurry Further news from St Vinnies. Please support the Musical Concert on Sunday 10th November at St Francis Xavier s Parish Hall in Frankston (more details further in the bulletin) organised by Elvira Spaziani. This promises to be a wonderful afternoon of musical delight. All profits go to St Vincent de Paul to enable us to help those less fortunate in our community. Thank you. NEXT WEEKEND S LEAVING COLLECTION WILL BE FOR CATHOLICARE. The Annual Appeal for CatholicCare will take place in this parish next weekend. CatholicCare has been supporting and caring for the families of the Melbourne Archdiocese and relies on the support of our Catholic community. Please give generously so CathlicCare can continue to support families to deal with the complex issues they face today. Special Intentions St Macartan s Catholic Church

5 WEEKLY BENEDICTION. With immediate effect, Benediction will be held EVERY Friday after 9:15am Mass (approximately 15 minutes.) Included in Weekly Saturday Mass at 9.15am is Our Lady s Novena. All welcome! A PRIVILEGE YOURS FOR THE CLAIMING. At this time each year, we seem to grow short in the number of generous people who take Communion to our sick/frail aged parishioners unable to come to Mass. If you could help by visiting even just one and uniting them with the Mass by enabling them to receive Communion, the privilege can be yours simply by giving your name either to the girls at the Parish Office ( ) or Sr Gen ( ). If you think you can t offer because you haven t had any training, the good news is that Fr Joe will have a session for us all in the near future. Thank you for your generous response and may God bless you. DEVELOPING OUR PASTORAL PLAN In our last pastoral planning workshop we used the insights gained in the previous workshops to identify four possible future worlds in which our parish could find itself. There was the uphill battle where the young families of our parish are stimulated to embrace their faith but our church was not welcoming. This may be because the leadership is uncoordinated and irrelevant to the younger families (and perhaps there is no priest!). On the other side of the coin there was the downhill battle where the church was welcoming but the young families were not responding. Two other future worlds we considered involved the youth of the future (those in the early years of primary school now) and the way in which our beliefs are being expressed to them. This youth may be keen to hear the message but the way in which it is expressed is simply not relevant to them, they can't join the conversation. On the other hand the expression of the message may have become clearly relevant but by then the youth have already left the space. These possible future worlds were identified from our consideration of some critical uncertainties facing our parish at the present time so these are real possible futures that our parish may face. They also begin to show us where we need to act and, in many cases, the urgency with which we need to act if we are to maintain a lively parish into the future. This work sets us up for the third phase of our planning. During this work we will consider our preferred future, our vision and our mission. From this we can we explore and list our strengths and weaknesses in the way in which we do things that we believe are part of our community vocation. We can also look at the broader community and explore and list the opportunities and threats to the parish community. From this work and our previous workshops we can identify the critical issues which the parish must address in the near future. This third phase involves two workshops and we are keen to see some new volunteers to be involved. The next workshop will be on Saturday morning 21 st September. Brian Scantlebury

PLEASE NOTE, THERE IS A SECURE BOX LOCATED ON THE WALL BE- HIND THE ALTAR (NEXT TO THE SINK) FOR DROPPING OFF LATE THANKSGIVING ENVELOPES. A REMINDER OF OUR THANKSGIVING PROGRAM Everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:33 When we first hear this statement, it seems that Jesus is making an unrealistic demand upon us. How can we renounce all of our possessions? We need them to live. However, what we must renounce is the belief that they belong to us. Everything that we have belongs to God alone. All of our resources are entrusted to us not only for our own use, but also so that we can help others. Once we renounce the idea that we possess or are entitled to anything, it is much easier to share the many gifts that God has given us. Then we truly are His Disciples. 9 FOOTY TIPPING. Last weekend was the end of the Home and Away season. We now have the Finals to come over the next four weeks. A disappointing end for many very loyal supporters. May 2014 be a better year for them. The season finished on a very exciting note. There were so many close finishes. Of course, if it had not been for the unusual circumstances 8th spot would not have been up for grabs. If it was back in the previous era when all games were played on a Saturday, it would have been even more exciting. People would have been flicking from one channel to another or turning the knob on their radio, especially for the Geelong/Brisbane Lions game and Port Adelaide/Carlton game. Fremantle's choice of players led to their demise at the hands of the Saints. The Saints' win put Terry McKenzie to top of the tipping but the later results saw him lose the lead. We will list all the prize winners next weekend. One of the nice moments last weekend was watching the smile on Saints' player Kosie. The team tried to get the ball to him many times so he could kick a goal in his last game. Eventually he had the ball, kicked and the ball went through for a goal. Everyone cheered. Players congratulated him. It was a great moment!! But, technology entered the playing arena. A review was taken. The ball tipped the top of the post. A point was declared but the lovely smile on Kosie face still remained. A great moment so different from headlines in previous weeks The Finals' tipping competition. It costs $5 to join. You have to choose four winners in week 1. If you get the four correct you proceed to week 2. In week 2 you need two winners to proceed to week 3. In week 3 you need two winners to proceed to week 4 where you need to pick the winner of the Grand Final. If all tippers are out after week 1, 2 or 3 everyone is back in the competition. Send your tips to amdgrc@gmail.com or text to or ring Hope you will join in the contest. If you missed out joining the Home and Away then try this one!! Parish Breakfast Warm welcome to all Parishioners It s only three weekends away!! Have you made a note in your diary?!! Date: Saturday 28th September 9.00am till 11.30am (last Saturday in September!) 10 St. Macartan s Catholic Church Drake St, Mornington 3931 Phone (03) Fax (03) mornington@cam.org.au RCIA (CATECHUMENATE 2013/2014) It is time to start planning, the new RCIA commencing soon. We have our team from last year ready to go many thanks to them Sr. Gen, John & Mary Lewis, Paul Girolami and Terry Roberts. Just a reminder of what it s about:- The R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a simple experience and explanation of the Catholic/Christian Faith the things that Christians believe and try to practice. We try to deal with some of the big issues of our society today. Topics like death, the problems of pain and suffering, moral issues, marriage and family, reasons for hope, etc, etc. The get-together is on a Monday evening in the Community Centre from 7.30pm 9.00pm (although the time is to be confirmed) ending with a cuppa, if you can stay a little while. I am sure we will have a good group again this year. The program is for; a) non-catholics b) Catholics who ve not been practising c) people who just want to update their understanding. At the end, some people may wish to join the Catholic faith if so, that s great if it just leads to a better understanding of oneself and God that would be wonderful too. This will be the twelfth RCIA group at St Macartan's since All these groups have been outstanding in growth, learning and friendship as well. RCIA runs from early October 2013 through to Pentecost 2014 missing holidays of course. Our first get-together is Monday October 7 th at 7.30pm. If you would like to discuss it a bit more before making a commitment or if you have any queries, just call any one of the following numbers; Parish House , John & Mary Lewis , Sr Gen , Paul Girolami or Terry Roberts Yours sincerely, Fr.
