3 First Reading Acts 12:1-11 A reading from the Acts of the Apostles King Herod started persecuting certain members of the Church. He beheaded James the brother of John, and when he saw that this pleased the Jews he decided to arrest Peter as well. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread, and he put Peter in prison, assigning four squads of four soldiers each to guard him in turns. Herod meant to try Peter in public after the end of Passover week. All the time Peter was under guard the Church prayed to God for him unremittingly. On the night before Herod was to try him, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with double chains, while guards kept watch at the main entrance to the prison. Then suddenly the angel of the Lord stood there, and the cell was filled with light. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him. Get up! he said Hurry! and the chains fell from his hands. The angel then said, Put on your belt and sandals. After he had done this, the angel next said, Wrap your cloak round you and follow me. Peter followed him, but had no idea that what the angel did was all happening in reality; he thought he was seeing a vision. They passed through two guard posts one after the other, and reached the iron gate leading to the city. This opened of its own accord; they went through it and had walked the whole length of one street when suddenly the angel left him. It was only then that Peter came to himself. Now I know it is all true, he said. The Lord really did send his angel and has saved me from Herod and from all that the Jewish people were so certain would happen to me. The Word of the Lord Responsorial Psalm Ps 33:2-9. R. v.5 (R.) The Lord set me free from all my fears. 1. I will bless the Lord at all times his praise always on my lips; in the Lord my soul shall make its boast. The humble shall hear and be glad. (R.) 2. Glorify the Lord with me. Together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me; from all my terrors he set me free. (R.) 3. Look towards him and be radiant; let your faces not be abashed. This poor man called; the Lord heard him and rescued his from all his distress. (R.) 4. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere him, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. He is happy who seeks refuge in him. (R.) Second Reading 2 Tm 4:6-8, A reading from the second letter of St Paul to Timothy My life is already being poured away as a libation, and the time has come for me to be gone. I have fought the good fight to the end; I have run the race to the finish; I have kept the faith; all there is to come now is the crown of righteousness reserved for me, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give

4 to me on that Day; and not only to me but to all those who have longed for his Appearing. The Lord stood by me and gave me power, so that through me the whole message might be proclaimed for all the pagans to hear; and so I was rescued from the lion s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from all evil attempts on me, and bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen. The Word of the Lord Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! You are Peter, the rock on which I will build my Church; the gates of hell will not hold out against it. Alleluia! Gospel Mt 16:13-19 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi he put this question to his disciples, Who do people say the Son of Man is? And they said, Some say he is John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. But you, he said, who do you say I am? Then Simon Peter spoke up, You are the Christ, he said, the Son of the living God. Jesus replied, Simon son of Jonah, you are a happy man! Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. And the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven. Communion Antiphon Peter said to Jesus: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus replied: You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church. 7 VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED PLEASE FOR TWO VERY IMPORTANT JOBS IN OUR PARISH!!! We are in urgent need of 4 volunteers to take up one month each on the caretaker roster. There are some who have done the job since the beginning and need a rest and some who have become ill. Please help if you are able to, as it is good to be able to have our church open every day for private prayer and many of you avail yourselves of this, but, it can only happen if we have some helpers as these days churches do come under attack from vandals and this has happened here in the past but our dedicated volunteers are very observant in their quiet way and we have been spared much damage thanks to their work. So please consider this if you are willing to help out. It s a monthly roster for weekdays only so it s one month of the year. If two families are happy to share opening and closing we are happy to accommodate that. No experience necessary - we have some basic training and a routine for you to follow. Also, we need 2 more volunteers to assist on the counting roster. This is about an 1 to 1½ hour job every 2 months! Both these jobs are very important to the running of the parish, so please consider if you are able to assist Please call the parish office ( ) and leave your name and phone number during office hours or call Max Fletcher on anytime to discuss. Thank you to all those who are helping at present and to those who have helped in the past the work you do for all the parish is very much appreciated. Catholic HIV/AIDS Ministry - CatholicCare Pastoral Services invites you to the launch of "Angels in Disguise, Stories from Catholic HIV/AIDS Ministry, CatholicCare" at St Francis Pastoral Centre Corner of Elizabeth and Lonsdale St Melbourne on Tuesday July 8, following Mass at 5.30pm. 8 4. The books of the Old Testament predicted that the joy of salvation would abound in messianic times. The prophet Isaiah exultantly salutes the awaited Messiah: You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy (9:3). He exhorts those who dwell on Zion to go forth to meet him with song: Shout aloud and sing for joy! (12:6). The prophet tells those who have already seen him from afar to bring the message to others: Get you up to a high mountain, O herald of good tidings to Zion; lift up your voice with strength, O herald of good tidings to Jerusalem (40:9). All creation shares in the joy of salvation: Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth! Break forth, O mountains, into singing! For the Lord has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his suffering ones (49:13). Zechariah, looking to the day of the Lord, invites the people to acclaim the king who comes humble and riding on a donkey : Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he (9:9). Perhaps the most exciting invitation is that of the prophet Zephaniah, who presents God with his people in the midst of a celebration overflowing with the joy of salvation. I find it thrilling to reread this text: The Lord, your God is in your midst, a warrior who gives you the victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing, as on a day of festival (3:17). This is the joy which we experience daily, amid the little things of life, as a response to the loving invitation of God our Father: My child, treat yourself well, according to your means Do not deprive yourself of the day s enjoyment (Sir 14:11, 14). What tender paternal love echoes in these words! 5. The Gospel, radiant with the glory of Christ s cross, constantly invites us to rejoice. A few examples will suffice. Rejoice! is the angel s greeting to Mary (Lk 1:28). Mary s visit to Elizabeth makes John leap for joy in his mother s womb (cf. Lk 1:41). In her song of praise, Mary proclaims: My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour (Lk 1:47). When Jesus begins his ministry, John cries out: For this reason, my joy has been fulfilled (Jn 3:29). Jesus himself rejoiced in the Holy Spirit (Lk 10:21). His message brings us joy: I have said these things to you, so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete (Jn 15:11). Our Christian joy drinks of the wellspring of his brimming heart. He promises his disciples: You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy (Jn 16:20). He then goes on to say: But I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you (Jn 16:22). The disciples rejoiced (Jn 20:20) at the sight of the risen Christ. In the Acts of the Apostles we read that the first Christians ate their food with glad and generous hearts (2:46). Wherever the disciples went, there was great joy (8:8); even amid persecution they continued to be filled with joy (13:52). The newly baptized eunuch went on his way rejoicing (8:39), while Paul s jailer and his entire household rejoiced that he had become a believer in God (16:34). Why should we not also enter into this great stream of joy?

9 The Fitzpatrick Family would like to thank the parishioners of St Macartan s for the most wonderful holiday ever dreamed of. We really lived it up! You were prayed for every day at our family Mass round the dining room table. May God bless you all for your love and generosity. Sr Gen and Family. Parish Footy Tipping ROUND 13: "Sons of the 'scray red, white and blue we will...". Was it not great to hear that song on Sunday evening when the Bulldogs showed plenty of ability and overcame Collingwood? Collingwood were the firmest favourites of the round with only three members who chose to pick the Doggies. A little disappointing knowing there is a greater number of Bulldog supporters. O ye of little faith! The same three also chose Melbourne, along with about 9 others. No one chose 9. John Lewis and Myke Schultz had seven out of the first but Collingwood and Essendon let them down. Margaret Canty had 7 and chose the Demons. Congratulations to Elizabeth Gordon, Gloria O'Loughlan and me for tipping the two outsiders; Western Bulldogs and Melbourne. The outright leader is John Lewis with 83. In this round, the average for the main competition was 5 but our average was 6. Geoff Walsh has now moved into the top 10. Previously, we reported Gary Ablett's Snr comments re life after football. During the week Chris Tarant made some interesting comments on the same subject. "Retirement is supposed to be a pleasant change of pace, not the struggle for work, fulfilment and relevance." Earlier this year Chris caught a train to a Collingwood game. He realised how foreign this was to him. Nobody made a fuss and he commented "I am sure over time I'll be just another face in the crowd. ROUND 14: With a few minutes to go in game 1 of the round only three wise ladies, who had shown their faith in Richmond, were the only ones to be left with a chance of getting 9; they were Sisters Martina and Gen and Gloria O'Loughlan. However, it was not to be. After the six games only four survived; Trish Wallace, Ann-Marie Le Meiere, Trish Duryea and Jack Jansson. However, thanks to the defeat of Carlton all four missed out on the potential 9. Francis Tiernan chose 8 and is now in the top 10. In the Victorian Amateurs competition there is a team from South Mornington in Division D3. They played in Div 4 Grand Final in 2012 and were promoted to D3 in However, disaster has struck. On Saturday the combined total scored against the Seniors and Reserves was 99 goals 42 points to Souths' 6 goals 3 points The question! Do young footballers not wish to travel to Melbourne every second week or is that players receive money by playing in the local Leagues or are young boys/men choosing other sports?

10 EAST TIMOR: Where Are We Now? Our Southern Deanery project supporting East Timor is alive and well. Our 28 th shipping container is on the way. We start filling the 29 th shortly. Our containers go to the Parish Priest of St John Bosco Parish, Laga. What does a container contain? A vast array of items. Some noteworthy inclusions in Container No. 28: 1,500kg of rice - packed into drums stacked near the door as the Parish priest asked they be easily accessed so he could continue the breakfast program for primary school pupils. 80+ plastic boxes of clothing and other items for new mothers and their infants. These are the baby boxes filled by pupils, parents and staff of St Macartan s school, by our parishioners, and by other deanery parishes. They are repacked to capacity so we don t waste money sending space. They are redirected to the Director of Maria Auxiliadora Clinic, Venilale. School equipment - desks, chairs, books, stationery, uniforms Church items - 2 organs, several statues, other sanctuary furniture Sports equipment - tennis nets/ball /racquets, other balls etc. Clothing - many bags of items of small size, cotton, modest in design Building items - ladders, tools, collections of nails/screws, etc Miscellaneous items - kitchen utensils, toiletries, everything useful. Our parish has another direct connection to the people of East Timor. The Maria Auxiliadora Clinic at Venilale treats up to 8,000 people each year. The only doctor, the administrator and all assistant staff are Religious sisters. The clinic s total costs (medicines, items given to patients, stipends, petrol, maintenance) are $1,500 per month. This is unbelievable value! This is where our small coin collection is so important. In each of the last three years we have managed to send Sr Carolina, the clinic administrator, $1,500 - the wonderful parishioners of St Macartan s have funded the clinic for a whole month. And we are already well on track to do the same this year. Please keep collecting those 5c and 10 coins - they save lives. With grateful thanks. Chris Smyth Solo Catholics July!!
