2 St Mary of the Cross (Mary MacKillop) Selected passages from a letter of St Mary of the Cross to Monsignor Kirby (22nd May, 1873) I must go back a little. I must tell you that from early childhood, as far back as I can remember, He gave me such a sense of His watchful presence that I would feel myself reproved for my smallest faults. He gave me good Catholic parents, a mother that in patience, resignation and suffering seemed to me, and to many more, a second Monica. My father had been educated for the Church and had studied very deeply. From him I learned so much of the teachings of our holy Faith. He had studied for seven years in Rome alone, and under the Jesuit Fathers, thus all I heard from him made me love the ways of our holy Faith as practised in Rome, and made me have a great affection for the Society of Jesus. But from the time I came to understand that he had been intended for the Church and had not persevered, I began to desire that I could leave all I loved, and live for God alone. My life as a child was one of sorrows, my home, when I had it, a most unhappy one. I tremble when I think of the natural pride of my disposition, but I would wish to sing forever the praises of our dear Lord who in His patience and goodness humbled it to the dust In early childhood He began to humble me. He gave me a most keen sense of duty, and in the discharge of what appeared to be my duty, I felt it impossible to pause or to consider my own (feelings) no matter how much they had to be trampled upon. But all this He did without my seeking it, (without my even) asking for it in the most imperfect way, and when I was old enough, and had the opportunities of consulting my Directors on my difficulties, I rarely ever did so - not knowing in my ignorance how to speak of them. Yet for all that, my good God watched over me and guarded me when I did not try to guard myself. When I was little more than sixteen years of age, the principal care of a very large family fell upon me, and from that until I was 25 I felt its burden yearly more and more. All this time too, I desired to be a Religious but was frequently in my impatience and pride in great danger of losing my holy vocation. DEATHS AND ANNIVERSARIES We remember Dino Costa, Patrick Dunlevie and Basil Blake who have died recently. We also remember those whose anniversaries occur at this time. May they rest in peace. Recent deaths: We offer condolences to the families and relatives of those who have died. The funeral of Dino Costa will be at Mary Immaculate Church on Tues 2 August at 2.00pm. Parish Strategic Review 2 years on: It s just over 2 years since we launched the Strategic Review project so where are we now? In August last year we published an update which re-stated our determination to see if we can retain the Mary Immaculate Church site as our one Mass Centre while achieving our objectives to: Bring the Parish together Establish an additional income stream to support our thanksgiving program Deliver on our mission and values To do this we decided to engage architects to help come up with ideas of how the Mary Immaculate Church and the site at Waverley Ave can be configured to achieve these objectives. It s true that the changes in Parish Priest and the need to get the approval of the Archdiocese have slowed the process down significantly. However we have now engaged and briefed three firms of architects and look forward to seeing their proposals by the end of August. It must be stressed that the current focus is on the Waverley Avenue site. No resolutions have been made to change the use or status of Mother of God or St Bernadette s Churches at this time. 4 St John Vianney ( ) FEASTDAY: 4 th August In 1805, John Vianney entered a seminary at age 19. After several months of study, he was still not prepared to attend lectures in Latin. He went to live with a friend who was a priest and who tutored him. This priest persuaded the bishop to ordain John not for his learning but for his holiness. After a few years, John was assigned to Ars, a village of about 50 families in France. The people were careless about practising their faith, so they were not happy with this priest who was eager to draw them back to God and Christian living. Some caused trouble by lying about John, by acting violently against him, and by refusing to cooperate with him. They hoped that he would give up and leave. Instead, Father Vianney increased his prayers, fasting, and penances. Gradually, people came to celebrate the sacraments and listen to his homilies. Within a few years, Father Vianney was spending hours a day in the confessional. People from all over France and other countries came to consult him. The government built a railroad line to Ars to accommodate all the pilgrims. Father Vianney just continued his hard, yet simple, way of prayer, fasting, and penance. He was strict with his parishioners but a hundred times more strict with himself. John gave away his furnishings, his belongings, and the gifts of clothes and food that the neighbours brought him. Once he received a black velvet cape as an award and sold it to buy food for those who were poor. He died at age 73. John was canonized in 1925 and is the patron of parish priests.
