St Macartan s Parish Prayer Heavenly Father, Creator and giver of all good things. Pour down your Holy Spirit upon this parish of Saint Macartan and the community that worships here. Father, make us holy, Inspire us to work together to spread your Gospel, strengthen our Faith and grant us the spirit of service, so that, with your grace and the help of our Lady Mary and Saint Macartan we may glorify you, and provide for the needs of our wider community. We ask You this through Christ our Lord. Amen A Special Prayer for Fathers God, bless all the fathers in the world. Guide them to be good role models and loving to all their children. 3 First Reading Ez 33:7-9 A reading from the prophet Ezekiel The word of the Lord was addressed to me as follows, Son of man, I have appointed you as sentry to the House of Israel. When you hear a word from my mouth, warn them in my name. If I say to a wicked man: Wicked wretch, you are to die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked man to renounce his ways, then he shall die for his sin, but I will hold you responsible for his death. If, however, you do warn a wicked man to renounce his ways and repent, and he does not repent, then he shall die for his sin, but you yourself will have saved your life. The Word of the Lord Responsorial Psalm Ps 94: R. v.8 (R.) O that today you would listen to his voice! Harden not your hearts. 1. Come, ring out our joy to the Lord; hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him, giving thanks, with songs let us hail the Lord. (R) 2. Come in; let us bow and bend low; let us kneel before the God who made us for he is our God and we the people who belong to his pasture, the flock that is led by his hand. (R) 3. O that today you would listen to his voice! Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the desert when your fathers put me to the test; when they tried me, though they saw my work. (R) Second Reading Rom 13:8-10 A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Romans Avoid getting into debt, except the debt of mutual love. If you love your fellow men you have carried out your obligations. All the commandments: You shall not commit adultery, you shall not kill, you shall not steal, you shall not covet, and so on, are summed up in this single command: You must love your neighbour as yourself. Love is the one thing that cannot hurt your neighbour; that is why it is the answer to every one of the commandments. The Word of the Lord Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! God was in Christ, to reconcile the world to himself; and the Good News of reconciliation he has entrusted to us. Alleluia!

Gospel Mt 18:15-20 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew Jesus said to his disciples: If your brother does something wrong, go and have it out with him alone, between your two selves. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others with you: the evidence of two or three witnesses is required to sustain any charge. But if he refuses to listen to these, report it to the community; and if he refuses to listen to the community, treat him like a pagan or a tax collector. I tell you solemnly, whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven. I tell you solemnly once again, if two of you on earth agree to ask anything at all, it will be granted to you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three meet in my name, I shall be there with them. The Gospel of the Lord Communion Antiphon I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. Father s Day is the traditional day for the annual collection for the Priests Retirement Foundation which supports the retired priests of the Archdiocese. Some 40 years ago Archbishop Knox introduced the practice of priests retiring at age 75. Until then, priests literally died with their boots on because an elderly diocesan priest had nowhere to live, apart from his presbytery. In 1990 Archbishop Little established the Priests Retirement Foundation with the motto caring for those who cared. Priests are not employees of the Archbishop or the Parish so they are not eligible for Superannuation. Like everyone else in the workplace priests provide for their retirement by contributing 12.5% of the weekly presbytery collection to the Foundation. Last financial year the Foundation spent $3 million dollars caring for those who cared - our retired priests. The Foundation depends on your support. Last year s Father s Day collection brought in $545,000 which happily was $65,000 more than the previous year. We are grateful to the Catholic people of Melbourne who so generously respond..fr Peter Matheson PP, Foundation Committee Chairman LATE THANKSGIVING ENVELOPES!! PLEASE NOTE, THERE IS A SECURE BOX LOCATED ON THE WALL BEHIND THE ALTAR (NEXT TO THE SINK) FOR DROPPING OFF LATE THANKSGIVING ENVELOPES SACRIFICIAL GIVING (2nd Collection) Weekly Pledge:$5,711; Average per week last month: - $4506 or 79% of the pledge PRESBYTERY COLLECTION (1st Collection last Sunday) Required: $1,700 - Collected: $1,550

31. The bishop must always foster this missionary communion in his diocesan Church, following the ideal of the first Christian communities, in which the believers were of one heart and one soul (cf. Acts 4:32). To do so, he will sometimes go before his people, pointing the way and keeping their hope vibrant. At other times, he will simply be in their midst with his unassuming and merciful presence. At yet other times, he will have to walk after them, helping those who lag behind and above all allowing the flock to strike out on new paths. In his mission of fostering a dynamic, open and missionary communion, he will have to encourage and develop the means of participation proposed in the Code of Canon Law,[34] and other forms of pastoral dialogue, out of a desire to listen to everyone and not simply to those who would tell him what he would like to hear. Yet the principal aim of these participatory processes should not be ecclesiastical organization but rather the missionary aspiration of reaching everyone. 32. Since I am called to put into practice what I ask of others, I too must think about a conversion of the papacy. It is my duty, as the Bishop of Rome, to be open to suggestions which can help make the exercise of my ministry more faithful to the meaning which Jesus Christ wished to give it and to the present needs of evangelization. Pope John Paul II asked for help in finding a way of exercising the primacy which, while in no way renouncing what is essential to its mission, is nonetheless open to a new situation.[35] We have made little progress in this regard. The papacy and the central structures of the universal Church also need to hear the call to pastoral conversion. The Second Vatican Council stated that, like the ancient patriarchal Churches, episcopal conferences are in a position to contribute in many and fruitful ways to the concrete realization of the collegial spirit.[36] Yet this desire has not been fully realized, since a juridical status of episcopal conferences which would see them as subjects of specific attributions, including genuine doctrinal authority, has not yet been sufficiently elaborated. [37] Excessive centralization, rather than proving helpful, complicates the Church s life and her missionary outreach. 33. Pastoral ministry in a missionary key seeks to abandon the complacent attitude that says: We have always done it this way. I invite everyone to be bold and creative in this task of rethinking the goals, structures, style and methods of evangelization in their respective communities. A proposal of goals without an adequate communal search for the means of achieving them will inevitably prove illusory. I encourage everyone to apply the guidelines found in this document generously and courageously, without inhibitions or fear. The important thing is to not walk alone, but to rely on each other as brothers and sisters, and especially under the leadership of the bishops, in a wise and realistic pastoral discernment....to be continued...

Since his election, Pope Francis has captured the attention of media and the people. Transfixed by his charisma and the many firsts of his papacy - first pope from the Americas, first Jesuit Pope, and first to be named Francis - they are now eager to know the substance of the man. In "10 Things Pope Francis Wants You to Know," John L. Allen, Jr., veteran Vatican news analyst, author, and "National Catholic Reporter "Senior Correspondent, writes with intimacy and clarity, from the perspective of his decades of experience covering the papacy. Discover the qualities that have defined Pope Francis from his days as a Cardinal and the early days of his papacy. Using the most recent, as well as archived, interviews with Pope Francis and those who know him, Allen describes his vision of leadership and evangelism and his desire for the Church to be close to the people, especially the poor. Allen describes several more teachings and insights from Pope Francis, such as: Never give up on God's mercy, always remain optimistic, create unity, and even keep a sense of humor. After reading "10 Things," you will know your new Pope and feel your faith renewed. (1) A Poor Church for the Poor; (2) Humility; (3) Stay Close to the People; (4) Never Give up on God s Mercy; (5) We re all Franciscans now; (6) The Faith Must Be Proposed, Never Imposed; (7) We re Not an NGO; (8) Never Give in to Pessimism; (9) Have a Sense of Humour; (10) The Importance of Unity. 9 FOR YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS Mondays, 8, 15, 22 and 29 September, 6.30pm 8pm at Cardinal Knox Centre, cnr of Lansdowne and Albert Sts, East Melbourne What do buying clothes, volunteering and mining have in common? All of our choices from the brands we buy, charities we support, places we visit, to the companies we work for affect other people. Pope Francis has said that our consciences need to be converted to justice, equality, simplicity and sharing (Message for Lent 2014) but what does this mean for us? Wouldn t it be nice to have a road map to help us make some of these decisions? The Church s social teachings can be that map! Catholic social teaching helps us interpret the Gospel message in a practical and contemporary context. (Optional dinner afterwards at Imperial Hotel- kitchen open till 9pm.). 10 St. Macartan s Catholic Church, Mornington 4 Drake St, Mornington 3931 All correspondence Phone (03) PO Box 41, Mornington VIC 3931 Fax (03) mornington@cam.org.au RCIA (CATECHUMENATE 2014 / 2015) It is time to start planning; the new RCIA program is commencing soon and we have our wonderful team ready to go. Just a reminder of what it s about: The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a simple experience and explanation of the Catholic/Christian Faith the things that Christians believe and try to practice. We try to deal with some of the big issues of our society today; topics like death, the problems of pain and suffering, moral issues, marriage and family, reasons for hope, etc, etc. The get-together is held on a weekly basis in the Community Centre on a Monday evening and lasts for approximately one hour, including a cuppa. I am sure we will have a good group again this year. The program is for; Non-Catholics. Catholics who have not been practising. People who just want to update their understanding. At the end, some people may wish to join the Catholic faith if so, that s great, however, if it just leads to a better understanding of oneself and God that would be wonderful too. This will be the thirteenth RCIA group at St Macartan s since All these groups have been outstanding in growth, learning and friendship as well. RCIA runs from early October 2014 through to Pentecost to 2015, missing holidays of course! Our first get-together is Monday October 6 th at 7:30pm. If you would like to discuss it a bit more before making a commitment or if you have any queries, just call any one of the following numbers; Parish House , Sr Gen , Paul Girolami or Terry Roberts Yours sincerely Fr Joe Tien PP

Parish Footy Tipping Round 23 The Home and Away Season finished with Round 23.and ended on a very exciting note. Richmond defeated Swans in Sydney and gained a place in the finals. This is the first time since 1974 that Richmond has had consecutive years in the finals. It also marks the 60th. year of the Bulldogs last premiership. No other team can beat that record. With the Tigers' great win there were very many happy faces at Mass (especially the Allans) and surely down at The Star of Sea where Sister Martina is now residing. The round saw the end of the careers of a trio of great players who played their last AFL game after providing many great moments because of their skill, character, attitude and their individual special qualities. Unfortunately all three played in losing teams in the round. Vale to Luke Ball (St.Kilda, Collingwood), Len Hayes (St Kilda) and Daniel Giansiracusa (Bulldogs). Although Collingwood did not make the eight they still had a say in which jumper Part Adelaide would wear.port Adelaide will wear he famous black and while they made so famous in South Australia. Collingwood is the only club that does have an alternative jumper. In the Amateus Spencer would be glad that his Old Collegians survived relegation as would De La Salle followers. However Old Xaverians would be in a state of shock that their team is not in the finals. Their highlight for the next week for Bulldogs supporters will be watching their VFL team challenge for the VFL premiership after a good win in the first final. Team loyalty and wishful thinking played a part in deciding the top ten in tipping competition. Results and prizes will be announced next weekend. Trivia. Fitzroys's (238) against Melbourne at Waverley Park in 1979 is the biggest score. Finals' Competition is in progress. Good luck to those taking part. Dear Parishioners of St Macartan s - GRAND FINAL BREAKFAST My name is Richard Le Miere and I am organising the Grand Final Footy Breakfast on behalf of the parish.
