Special Intentions: St Macartan's Catholic Church Congratulations to Fr Joe who celebrates his 63 rd birthday today (Sunday). We pray for all Father s as we celebrate Fathers Day this Sunday. A PRAYER FOR FATHERS God our Father, we give you thanks and praise for all fathers young and old. We pray for our own fathers who nurture, love and care for us so unselfishly. We pray for young fathers, newly embracing their vocation; may they find the courage and perseverance to balance work, family and faith in joy and sacrifice. We pray for fathers around the world whose children are lost or suffering; may they know that the God of compassion walks with them in their sorrow. We pray for men who are not fathers but who still mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice. We remember fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and who nourish us with their love. Amen. 1st/2nd Sept Mon 3rd Sept Tues 4th Sept Wed 5th Sept Thurs 6th Sept Fri 7th Sept A THOUGHT A DAY He who dies with the most toys is still dead. The company you keep helps determine the trouble you meet. One day, it'll all make sense. The grass might look greener on the other side, but it still needs to be mowed. They're commandments, not suggestions! Simon says, "Follow the Leader. First Reading Dt 4:1-2, 6-8 A reading from the book of Deuteronomy Moses said to the people: Now, Israel, take notice of the laws and customs that I teach you today, and observe them, that you may have life and may enter and take possession of the land that the Lord the God of your fathers is giving you. You must add nothing to what I command you, and take nothing from it, but keep the commandments of the Lord your God just as I lay them down for you. Keep them, observe them, and they will demonstrate to the peoples your wisdom and understanding. When they come to know of all these laws they will exclaim, No other people is as wise and prudent as this great nation. And indeed, what great nation is there that has its gods so near as the Lord our God is to us whenever we call to him? And what great nation is there that has laws and customs to match this whole Law that I put before you today? The Word of the Lord

Responsorial Psalm Ps 14:2-5. R. v.1 (R.) The just will live in the presence of the Lord. 1. Lord, who shall dwell on your holy mountain? He who walks without fault; he who acts with justice and speaks the truth from his heart. (R.) 2. He who does no wrong to his brother, who casts no slur on his neighbour, who holds the godless in disdain, but honours those who fear the Lord. (R.) 3. He who keeps his pledge, come what may; who takes no interest on a loan and accepts no bribes against the innocent. Such a man will stand firm for ever. (R.) Second Reading Jas 1:17-18, 21-22, 27 A reading from the letter of St James It is all that is good, everything that is perfect, which is given us from above; it comes down from the Father of all light; with him there is no such thing as alteration, no shadow of a change. By his own choice he made us his children by the message of the truth so that we should be a sort of first-fruits of all that he had created. Accept and submit to the word which has been planted in you and can save your souls. But you must do what the word tells you, and not just listen to it and deceive yourselves. Pure, unspoilt religion, in the eyes of God our Father is this: coming to the help of orphans and widows when they need it, and keeping oneself uncontaminated by the world. The Word of the Lord Gospel Acclamation Jas 1:18 Alleluia, alleluia! The Father gave us birth by his message of truth, that we might be as the first fruits of his creation. Alleluia! Gospel Mk 7:1-8, 14-15, A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered round Jesus, and they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them. For the Pharisees, and the Jews in general, follow the tradition of the elders and never eat without washing their arms as far as the elbow; and on returning from the market place they never eat without first sprinkling themselves. There are also many other observances which have been handed down to them concerning the washing of cups and pots and bronze dishes. So these Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the elders but eat their food with

unclean hands? He answered, It was of you hypocrites that Isaiah so rightly prophesied in this passage of scripture: This people honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me. The worship they offer me is worthless, the doctrines they teach are only human regulations. You put aside the commandment of God to cling to human traditions. He called the people to him again and said, Listen to me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that goes into a man from outside can make him unclean; it is the things that come out of a man that make him unclean. For it is from within, from men s hearts, that evil intentions emerge: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within and make a man unclean. The Gospel of the Lord Communion Antiphon Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Priests generally retire at 75 years according to Canon (Church) Law. 96 Melbourne priests are currently retired. 6 retired priests are aged in their 90s. 43 retired priests are aged in their 80s. 27 retired priests are aged between retired priests are aged between priests aged under 65 have retired due to ill health. Most have served 50 years in parish ministry before retiring. There will be an average of 6 retirements per year for the next six years. There have been 4 priests (on average) ordained per year for the last 40 years. "I would be most grateful if you can contribute to the Father's Day Appeal, for our retired priests. "Some donors have been supporting the Appeal since its inception in 1990 by Archbishop Little. This shows how much the Catholic people of Melbourne value the huge contribution made by priests who are now retired, but have cared for them in former times. "Your generous donations have ensured a normal living for our priests who have served actively in the Archdiocese, but who are now elderly and frail. In fact, in the past 12 months, the Priests' Retirement Foundation has assisted me in caring for about 100 sick or retired priests. "Our support for our retired priests and sick priests who have shown us deep spiritual care, is a true sign of gratitude." - Archbishop Denis Hart Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible. Receipts are issued at end of July 2013 for gifts of $5 or more. Minister Unto God Prayer Group Anyone is most welcome to join us at the meetings on Tuesday 10am in the Parish Community Centre.

St.Macartan's Footy Tipping Certificate Unit 22 The results of round 22 brought some new tippers to the fore. Some tippers have been consistent but were always just behind the leaders. Round 22 changed that and though we had no one with 9 correct Peter McGain showed his true talent to lead the group with a 7 and the closest margin. Well done Peter but, with one round to go you have left your run a little late but, you could be the one to watch for next year just like the Western Bulldogs. Also with 7 was another fast finisher in Steve Larken. Our two tipsters who put all their tips in at the start, Neil Noonan and Mike Eastwood both had a 7. Myke Schultz and John Sheehan also tipped 7. No one tipped the Gold Coast in this round. The involvement of Malcolm Blight certainly has made difference to Gold Coast over the last few rounds. It is a pity the Blues get all the blame and the Gold Coast get very little praise. It seems that is the way it is in sport nowadays. No one wins because they did well they win because the other side did badly. While some followers like to see the Blues lose there would be some young followers who would be devastated. The Blues are changing their coach so Ratten coaches his last game this round. If they change to Malthouse then, considering his record at Collingwood it could be 2022 before the Blues get their next premiership. Win another premiership. Terry Coppock holds a three point lead coming to the last round. Sharing second place are Kees Duyvestyn and Paul Stinear. James Barrett did not have a good round and has moved to equal fourth with Dawn Meier who gained a point. Sister Lois, Nick Roe, Delina Frank and Irene Hackett make up the top ten but there a number with the chance to enter the top ten with a good last round. The battle to see who can pick the most losers is a close finish between two of our members. Our best loser leads by one. Finals Knockout Competition... Week 1 of the finals you choose the four teams you think will win. If you are correct you are eligible to tip in week 2. If no one has four correct, then all will go to week 2. Week 2 of the finals you choose the two teams you think will win. If you are correct you are eligible to tip in week 3. Week 3 of the finals you choose the two teams you think will win. If you are correct you are eligible to tip in week 4 Week 4 is the Grand Final and you choose who you think will win. All those who choose the winner share the prize. If no one wins, the losers share the prize. To enter costs $5. To enter tips send to amdgrc@gmail.com or phone An Interesting Conversation at St Macartan's... A. Peter Keightley has served as the Parish Accountant for many years as well as being a member of the Parish Council and contributing in many other ways to the functioning of the parish. He has handed over the accountant role to Peter Mayer but will undoubtedly continue to contribute in the ongoing life of the parish. Paddy Hughes has also been a contributor over a number of years as co-ordinator of the Liturgy Committee. In this capacity he played a major role in organising the outstanding liturgies for Easter, Christmas and other significant occasions, again involving many hours of his time. The Parish Council, on behalf of the entire parish, extends sincere appreciation to them both for jobs well done. Church Properties Parishioners may be aware that the Mornington Peninsula Shire is conducting a Heritage Survey of the entire Shire. It has completed the initial survey of the former Mornington Shire and has released a draft report for public comment. St Macartan s Church and former Presbytery are both listed in this draft for Heritage Overlay. The Draft Report may be inspected at the Council offices and Library, or can be viewed on the internet at under Have Your Say Heritage Study Review. The citation is in Volume 3, pp Parishioners wishing to make comment on this issue, please send them to the Parish Council care of the parish office. Any parish submission to the Mornington Peninsula Shire must be in by Monday 24 September.

We have our team from last year ready to go many thanks to them Sr. Gen, John & Mary Lewis, Paul Girolami and Terry Roberts, and our presenters Michael Harrison and David Hansen. Just a reminder of what it s about:- The R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a simple experience and explanation of the Catholic/Christian Faith the things that Christians believe and try to practise. We try to deal with some of the big issues of our society today. Topics like death, the problems of pain and suffering, moral issues, marriage and family, reasons for hope, etc, etc. The get-together is on a Monday evening in the Community Centre from 7.30pm 9.00pm ending with a cuppa, if you can stay a little while. I am sure we will have a good group again this year. The program is for; a) non-catholics b) Catholics who ve not been practising c) people who just want to update their understanding. At the end, some people may wish to join the Catholic faith if so, that s great if it just leads to a better understanding of oneself and God that would be wonderful too. This will be the eleventh RCIA group at St Macartan's since All these groups have been outstanding in growth, learning and friendship as well. RCIA runs from early October 2012 through to Pentecost 2013 missing holidays of course. Our first get-together is Monday, October 8 th at 7.30pm. If you would like to discuss it a bit more before making a commitment just give me a ring.
