He looked up, and there he saw three men standing near him. As soon as he saw them he ran from the entrance of the tent to meet them, and bowed to the ground. My lord, he said, I beg you, if I find favour with you, kindly do not pass your servant by. A little water shall be brought; you shall wash your feet and lie down under the tree. Let me fetch a little bread and you shall refresh yourselves before going further. That is why you have come in your servant s direction. They replied, Do as you say. Abraham hastened to the tent to find Sarah. Hurry, he said, knead three bushels

3 of flour and make loaves. Then running to the cattle Abraham took a fine and tender calf and gave it to the servant, who hurried to prepare it. Then taking cream, milk and the calf he had prepared, he laid all before them, and they ate while he remained standing near them under the tree. Where is your wife Sarah? they asked him. She is in the tent, he replied. Then his guest said, I shall visit you again next year without fail and your wife will then have a son. The Word of the Lord Responsorial Psalm Ps 14:2-5. R. v.1 (R.) The just will live in the presence of the Lord. 1. Lord, who shall dwell on your holy mountain? He who walks without fault; he who acts with justice and speaks the truth from his heart; he who does not slander with his tongue. (R.) 2. He who does no wrong to his brother, who casts no slur on his neigh bour, who holds the godless in disdain, but honours those who fear the Lord. (R.) 3. He who keeps his pledge, come what may; who takes no interest on a loan and accepts no bribes against the innocent. Such a man will stand firm for ever. (R.) Second Reading Col 1:24-28 A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Colossians It makes me happy to suffer for you, as I am suffering now, and in my body to do what I can to make up all that has still to be undergone by Christ for the sake of his body, the Church. I became the servant of the Church when God made me responsible for delivering God s message to you, the message which was a mystery hidden for generations and centuries and has now been revealed to his saints. It was God s purpose to reveal it to them and to show all the rich glory of this mystery to pagans. The mystery is Christ among you, your hope of glory: this is the Christ we proclaim, this is the wisdom in which we thoroughly train everyone and instruct everyone, to make them all perfect in Christ. The Word of the Lord Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! Happy are they who have kept the word with a generous heart and yield a harvest through perseverance. Alleluia! Gospel Lk 10:38-42 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord s feet

4 and listened to him speaking. Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me. But the Lord answered: Martha, Martha, he said, you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her. The Gospel of the Lord Communion Antiphon Behold, I stand at the door and knock, says the Lord. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door to me, I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me. FROM THE PARISH SPIRITUAL & CULTURAL LIFE OF OUR PARISH Our workshop was quite productive with a number of interesting points emerging. Some key drivers which link through to multiple elements within our parish were seen to be: Relevance; Youth; Multicultural; Common set of beliefs; Joining the gathering, and The priest Relevance This will require a dialogue with our community which will lead to different demands / needs / expression depending on the group concerned (is there one relevant expression which speaks to, say, the Macartan Club and to our Youth?) Youth In our workshop we spoke of enabling opportunities for our youth to become involved. The other side of this of course is our need to have the youth engaged to ensure the survival of our church in the future. Multicultural How significant is this group within our parish? This needs to be explored further (what about our indigenous brothers and sisters?) Common set of beliefs It would seem at first that there is little we can do in this regard. However, the way in which these beliefs are expressed (relevance and commitment) and where they are expressed could have a significant effect. Joining the gathering While this is important in welcoming new members of our church (RCIA) it really applies to everybody if we are to maintain a vibrant connection to our church which, in turn, nourishes our faith and spirituality. The priest In our workshop we noted the role of the priest as Celebrant, Pastor and Servant. Those three roles place a great demand on our priest. As with anybody else, our priests need our encouragement, support and wise counsel. Without this it is unreasonable to demand their fulfillment of their triple roles. We also noted the way in which various issues and elements of our parish interacted with each other in a way that could reinforce and enliven our parish. One group of activities links the community through outreach, teaching, joining together and the mass and sacraments.

5 FIC Another group of activities links the priest and youth through outreach, social justice and sharing in the liturgy. Both of these interacting groups engage the spiritual and cultural life of our parish and both include two of the key drivers identified above, i.e. The priest - Youth - Joining the gathering These interacting groups also involve critical uncertainties (which way will they move in the future?) and will be important in exploring possible future scenarios. The interacting groups can give us guidance on how to address all elements in our spiritual and cultural life in order to gain maximum return for our endeavors (where do we start and how do we stimulate the follow on elements?) In our workshop we also identified some elements as possible links to our next map, the cultural and secular life of the parish, i.e. Youth - Multicultural - Social welfare, and Gathering after Sunday Mass. NEW PARISHIONERS St Mac s is very keen to welcome new parishioners. We are a vibrant Parish with wonderful groups and plenty to offer. Please fill in a slip (available in both foyers) and place in the box provided we will be in touch with you shortly thereafter. Thank you, Parish Welcome Team. Dennis Rosbrook Co-ordinator or Parish Office. LATE THANKSGIVING ENVELOPES!! 6 A REMINDER OF OUR THANKSGIVING PROGRAM Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her. Luke 10:42 The story of Martha and Mary reminds us that God wants each of us to serve Him, just as Martha so graciously served. However, we will never know what God wants us to do unless we spend some time like Mary did, just sitting quietly at God s feet and listening to His words. If you would like to join our Thanksgiving program, please contact the Parish Office PARISH S ACTIVITIES MACARTAN CLUB The monthly meeting will be held this Friday 26th July in the Community Centre following 9:15am Mass. 7 Little Macs Playgroup Term Little Mac s Playgroup just keeps getting busier and busier, it is so great to see so many families involved and becoming a part of the St Macartan s community. Children love coming along to play, paint, draw, get crafty, enjoy fruit snack and sing along each week to their choice of nursery rhymes and favourite songs. Last term, we were able to purchase many new toys, tables and chairs as well as an outdoor climbing frame using the money donated at each session by playgroup members. This term, I would like to set up an outdoor play area including a children s garden. This will be great in promoting the outdoors and getting the children involved in growing their own plants. To start this off, I would like to hold our first working bee/gardening session on Wednesday the 21 st August during playgroup time. I would like to prepare the back area by getting some raised garden beds set up. We could use as many helpers little and big as we can get. We would also really appreciate any donations of kids gardening tools, raised garden beds, plants, potting mix, anything that you think would help to make this a really great outdoor area for everyone! If anyone would like to donate anything it can be dropped at the school or parish office where I will collect or alternatively if you would like me to pick up donations please contact me on the number below and I will be more than happy to collect. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Kindest Regards, Kylie Willmot (ph: ) Dates for your Diary: Every Wednesday during term time: Little Mac s Playgroup. St Macartan s Community Centre 9:30am to 11:30am High Spirits News 2013 White sashes: If you spot any children wearing a white sash between now and August, you'll know exactly why - they are preparing for their First Eucharist and would much appreciate a special prayer and words of encouragement. These beautiful children are the future of our church, so we need to make them feel very welcomed and valued. The High Spirits program at St Macartan s caters for any Catholic children who are attending non-catholic schools and would like to prepare for their Sacraments. If you have any questions, please highspirits2011@gmail.com

9 The Padua College CAP [Catholic Action Program] students are planning the annual Trivia Night on Friday 2nd August at 7.30pm to raise funds for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. All money raised will go directly to local parish conferences of St Vincent de Paul to support local families. The appeal provides food, blankets, warm clothing and other necessities for families in need, particularly in the winter months. The evening will run on the usual Trivia night formula with tables providing their own refreshments and nibbles for the night. A Silent Auction and a great range of prizes will be provided and tea/coffee and supper will be available on the night. Why not organise a table with friends?!! Tickets are $10 per person for a table of 10 (or join an existing table) and will be available by 24 th June from the Front Office at Mornington Campus or by contacting Bernadette Young at byoung@padua.catholic.edu.au or on Our grateful thanks in anticipation. Footy Tipping Unit 16 What a round!!---multicultural Round. So, who better to score full marks with a 9 than Chris Smyth, our great man, from across the Tasman. Not only did Chris get them all correct but he also had the margin correct. He was one of five member out of members in the main competition Well done Chris. However, the multicultural theme did not stop there as Nick Roe (Ireland) and Denis Hawthorne (England) and Irene Hackett (overseas ambassador) also scored 9. Dawn and Spencer Meier and the top Demon supporter, John Sheehan which shows not all is lost at Melbourne, had a 9. Dennis Rosbrook had the correct margin with a score of 8, Marie O'Halloran's lead was reduced to three. Delina Frank still holds second spot. It was good the sun shone brightly on Richmond despite the very windy conditions in Cairns. Sr Martina was much happier, her prayers had been answered. Ben Hansen (equal 3rd) is the first junior to reach the 100. Grandfather needs to hurry up. The best family duo is the Franks, Delina and John both over 100, but Delina is in outright 2nd place. The Brisbane Lions win was a great lead up into France's national day on 14th July; Brisbane's theme song is the same tune as the French National Anthem and to hear it played late Saturday night, the vigil of Bastille day was inspiring to many. I can picture my mother, upstairs, standing to attention!! No doubt, Paul Girolami and Frank Crea had their glasses raised. Only six rounds including this weekend to be played. Then the finals and, hopefully, not interrupted by an election! Like the weather you cannot always trust the forecast is 14th August!!
