Yet you are merciful to all, because you can do all things and overlook men s sins so that they can repent. Yes, you love all that exists, you hold nothing of what you have made in abhorrence, for had you hated anything, you

2 would not have formed it. And how, had you not willed it, could a thing persist, how be conserved if not called forth by you? You spare all things because all things are yours, Lord, lover of life, you whose imperishable spirit is in all. Little by little, therefore, you correct those who offend, you admonish and remind them of how they have sinned, so that they may abstain from evil and trust in you, Lord. This is the word of the Lord. Responsorial Psalm Ps 144: R. see v.1 (R.) I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. 1. I will give you glory, O God my King, I will bless your name for ever. I will bless you day after day and praise your name for ever. (R) 2. The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures. (R) 3. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and your friends shall repeat their blessing. They shall speak of the glory of your reign and declare your might, O God. (R) 4. The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall and raises all who are bowed down. (R) Second Reading 2 Thes 1:11-2:2 A reading from the second letter of St Paul to the Thessalonians We pray continually that our God will make you worthy of his call, and by his power fulfil all your desires for goodness and complete all that you have been doing through faith; because in this way the name of our Lord Jesus Christ will be glorified in you and you in him, by the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. To turn now, brothers, to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and how we shall all be gathered round him: please do not get excited too soon or alarmed by any prediction or rumour or any letter claiming to come from us, implying that the Day of the Lord has already arrived. This is the word of the Lord. Gospel Acclamation Jn 3:16 Alleluia, alleluia! God loved the world so much, he gave us his only Son, that all who believe in him might have eternal life. Alleluia! Gospel Lk 19:1-10 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke Jesus entered Jericho and was going through the town when a man whose name was Zacchaeus made his appearance; he was one of the senior tax collectors and a wealthy man. He was anxious to see what

3 kind of man Jesus was, but he was too short and could not see him for the crowd; so he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus who was to pass that way. When Jesus reached the spot he looked up and spoke to him: Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry, because I must stay at your house today. And he hurried down and welcomed him joyfully. They all complained when they saw what was happening. He has gone to stay at a sinner s house they said. But Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to the Lord, Look, sir, I am going to give half my property to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody I will pay him back four times the amount. And Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek out and save what was lost. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Communion Antiphon Lord, you will show me the path of life and fill me with joy in your presence. The Parish Loss and Grief Group is interested to know of any parishioners who presently feel a need for this Mass. Hence, anyone who would like to participate in a Memorial Christmas Mass for Babies is asked to contact Kees, , or the Parish Office, , prior to 13 November. Enquiries to Danielle O Sullivan (Rowler) We will be collecting until the end of November, so we have gifts ready for the Brosnan Christmas party. Thank you in advance. Mission Watoto Mornington A letter from someone just back from Watoto in Uganda where a team of 12 (5 from our Parish & 3 with Parish Connections) fundraised and built a brick home for vulnerable children and mothers. The growing Watoto organisation lovingly cares for many people including babies, children, widows, child soldiers, victims of civil war, aids, disease and poverty. The Uganda experience is hard to describe but it is full of hope, love, happiness and peace. Happiness for the vulnerable and orphaned children that we had such close contact with. These lucky children are now safely living in a special village. They live in three bedroom homes built by teams such as ours from around the world. Each home has eight children and a house-mum and they remain a family for life and are loved, fed and clothed by the Watoto organisation. Teams also built 130 homes, medical centres, pre, primary and secondary schools, etc, within the village complex. We happily built a double storey teachers home. Each day work was preceeded by the locals (who helped and gave us a crash course in brick laying) saying a prayer and singing songs of praise in Ugandan and English. We reciprocated by singing Australian songs. We had such fun! Love, peace, hope was everywhere one could feel that the new families knew how lucky they were. We received and gave so many hugs and cuddles it was overwhelming! People caring and loving one another. It was a wonderful privilege and a humbling experience to be an active part of helping to make a difference. Other highlights of our trip included; Visiting Bulrushes Babies Home in Kampala (home for abandoned and vulnerable babies up to 2 years old); Lunch with host families at the village; Mass at the Church of the 7 African Christian Martyrs; Dedication of our building; Animal Safari.

11 A letter from Archbishop Denis Hart YOUR VOTE YOUR VALUES ISSUES AND QUESTIONS FOR PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATES FOR THE VICTORIAN ELECTION I have enclosed copes of a document Your Vote Your Values raising some issues and questions for candidates seeking election in the forthcoming Victorian election issued by the Diocesan Bishops of Victoria. The coming lection will be of great importance to Victorians. The Church is actively engaged in the community through its contribution in the provision of hospitals, aged care, welfare and education at all levels. These works of the Church are supported and utilised by hundreds of thousands of Victorians. Arising out of this engagement the Bishops wish to bring to the attention of Catholics and the broader community some of the considerations we should all have in mind when deciding how to vote. COPIES OF THE DOCUMENT ARE IN BOTH FOYERS Vigil for Nascent Human Life Immediately before the First Sunday of Advent, the Holy Father is celebrating an evening vigil honour of prayer for human life, and he has invited dioceses and communities to hold a similar vigi. In Melbourne, the Hour of Prayer for Human life will take place on Saturday 13 th November at 5pm in St Patrick s Cathedral, followed by Mass at 6pm celebrated by the Archbishop. Parishioners, life groups and friends are most welcome to join this important moment of prayer A recent letter submitted to The Tablet by Fr Larry Lorenzoni of San Francisco.. I enjoyed seeing again the great question recalled recently (The Tablet, Sept. 27) by the Tablet's former editor: "When Pope Benedict beatifies the great English cardinal on 19 September, what will he make of Newman s famous after-dinner toast, I will drink to Pope by all means still, to conscience first, and to the Pope afterwards?" I'm sure John Wilkins can appreciate and enjoy now, after September 19, John Henry Newman's utter frankness in voicing a personal opinion rich with recent overtones. Newman's opinion was reported in "Inside the Vatican" (Aug. - Sept. 2010) by John J. Hughes, son and grandson of Anglican priests, who served as an Anglican priest himself for six years before becoming a Catholic in Commenting on the pastoral letter Cardinal Henry Edward Manning issued after the First Vatican Council, implying that the pope's infallibility was unlimited, Newman wrote: "We have come to a climax of tyranny. It is not good for a pope to live 20 years. It is an anomaly and bears no good fruit: he becomes a god, has no one to contradict him, does not know facts, and does cruel things without meaning it." Pius IX's pontificate ( ), the longest in church history, had almost eight years to run when Newman penned those lines.
