3 FIRST READING Chr 36: A reading from the second book of Chronicles In addition, the leaders of Judah, the priests, and the people followed the sinful example of the nations around them in worshiping idols, and so they defiled the Temple, which the Lord himself had made holy. The Lord, the God of their ancestors, had continued to send prophets to warn his people, because he wanted to spare them and the Temple. But they made fun of God s messengers, ignoring his words and laughing at his prophets, until at last the Lord s anger against his people was so great that there was no escape. He burned down the Temple and the city, with all its palaces and its wealth, and broke down the city wall. He took all the survivors to Babylonia, where they served him and his descendants as slaves until the rise of the Persian Empire. And so what the Lord had foretold through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: The land will lie desolate for seventy years, to make up for the Sabbath rest that has not been observed. In the first year that Cyrus of Persia was emperor, the Lord made what he had said through the prophet Jeremiah come true. He prompted Cyrus to issue the following command and send it out in writing to be read aloud everywhere in his empire. This is the command of Cyrus, Emperor of Persia. The Lord, the God of Heaven, has made me ruler over the whole world and has given me the responsibility of building a temple for him in Jerusalem in Judah. Now, all of you who are God s people, go there, and may the Lord your God be with you. The word of the Lord. RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps136. R. V.6 (R) Let my tongue be silenced, if ever I forget you! Student: By the rivers of Babylon there we sat and wept, remembering Zion; on the pop lars that grew there we hung our harps (R). Student: For it was there that they asked us, our captors, for songs, our oppressors, for joy. Sing to us, they said, one of Zion s songs. (R). Student: O how could we sing the song of the Lord on alien soil? If I forget you, Jerusa lem, let my right hand wither! (R). SECOND READING Eph 2:4-10 A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Ephesians But God s mercy is so abundant, and his love for us is so great, that while we were spiritually dead in our disobedience he brought us to life with Christ. It is by God s grace that you have been saved. In our union with Christ Jesus he raised us up with him to rule with him in the heavenly world. He did this to demonstrate for all time to come the extraordinary greatness of his grace in the love he showed us in Christ Jesus. For it is by God s grace that you have been saved through faith. It is not the result of your own efforts, but God s gift, so that no one can boast about it. God has made us what we are, and in our union with Christ Jesus he has created us for a life of good deeds, which he has already prepared for us to do. The Word of the Lord

4 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: God loved the world so much, he gave us his only Son, that all who believe in him might have eternal life. GOSPEL Jn 3:14-21 A reading from the holy Gospel according to John. As Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the desert, in the same way the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to be its judge, but to be its saviour. Those who believe in the Son are not judged; but those who do not believe have already been judged, because they have not believed in God s only Son. This is how the judgement works: the light has come into the world, but people love the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds are evil. Those who do evil things hate the light and will not come to the light, because they do not want their evil deeds to be shown up. But those who do what is true come to the light in order that the light may show that what they did was in obedience to God. The Gospel of the Lord. COMMUNION ANTIPHON Jerusalem is built as a city bonded as one together. It is there that the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, to praise the name of the Lord. FIRST EUCHARIST MASSES The children of St Macartan s Parish school are celebrating their First Eucharist at all Masses this weekend and next. Please remember these children and their families in your prayers. There will be a children s Mass of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday, 2 nd April, at 5pm. We are looking for children to help out as disciples, readers, and for the offertory. 5 4th Sunday of Lent This week we meet Sarita who was struggling to grow enough food for her family on her tiny farm plot in Nepal. In 2007, with the assistance of a program run by Caritas Nepal, she started a fish-raising business with 11 others. Now, they have a life-long source of food and income. Please donate to Project Compassion 2015 and help people in rural Nepal create a life-long source of food and income to benefit entire communities Project Compassion Boxes and/or sets of Envelopes are available in each foyer.
