2 30 Tregarth Machynlleth Dear Friends, I do hope that you were able to keep warm during the very cold weather we ve had over the last couple of weeks. In spite of the cold and the wind some the daffodils were blooming along the path to St Peter s on Palm Sunday morning welcoming us to worship and reminding us that spring really is just around the corner. Those daffodils and all the other beautiful spring flowers remind us, as they push up through the cold soil, of the earth shattering events of Good Friday and the power of God that first Easter morning when Christ rose from the dead. PRAISE GOD we shout! Death may surround us but, through Jesus Christ and the empty tomb, Resurrection and eternal life burst into our very being. AL- LELUIA we shout what triumph! It is for us to share this triumph eagerly and willingly and through sharing our faith in the Gospel, God, through the power of His Spirit within us, will bless our efforts. The power of the Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead will instil in us and others glorious new life. Is it any wonder our cry on Easter morning is: CHRIST IS RISEN! HE IS RISEN INDEED! ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA! I ll leave you with a prayer for when the going gets tough With the blessings of our Risen Lord to you and yours Kathleen Dear Father, Life can be difficult. Sometimes it feels as though the sun has stopped shining, just as it did on that first Good Friday. Sometimes it can feel as though we are stuck in the darkness and it seems impossible that the light will ever shine again. And yet the reality is that Friday did move on, into the most glorious Sunday. The Son did rise - and his light shines on, transforming the darkest of times, holding out hope and peace and life to all who will turn and look into his face. He is alive. He will help us. 3 LIFE AT THE OTHER END Most of us reading this magazine live a fairly comfortable life, untroubled by fear of the security forces if we belong to a particular racial or ethnic group, free to support whatever political party we choose and free to practise our Christian faith. But many are not; and some of these reach our shores having fled their own countries, persecuted, tortured, and deeply traumatised both physically and mentally. Life for them, at the other end of the journey, promises hope, freedom and sanctuary. But often the reality is very different. The number of asylum seekers arriving in the United Kingdom each year is not accurately known. Most arrive without passport or papers and face arrest as illegal immigrants. Many will have endured terrifying journeys along the way. They may be detained in institutions that are no better than prisons and have to face a series of lengthy interviews with the UK Border Agency which may last whole days. Very few speak English and the provision of interpreters is not always satisfactory. After what is sometimes a long process many are refused refugee status and deported back to their countries of origin where they face further torture and even death. As a volunteer working with an organisation called Freedom from Torture for the last five years I have had the privilege of meeting with asylum seekers from many different countries for example Iran, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. Their stories distress me and the accounts of unimaginably brutal torture are beyond contemplation. Often they have left behind spouses, children and parents and have no means of contacting them for fear of the authorities. Even the Red Cross seldom manages to trace them. These men and women are survivors who I believe desperately need our support and understanding. Freedom from Torture, previously known as The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture is a charity which, for the last 25 years, has recognised the abhorrence of torture and believes that those who have undergone this atrocity have a right to rehabilitation and support, works tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of many asylum seekers. Their work varies from providing counselling and psychotherapy, documentation of survivors testimonies, policy and advocacy work around asylum seekers right to protection in the UK and the preparation of medico-legal reports for the Home Office which provide evidence of torture and its consequences. 4 UNDEB Y MAMAU / MOTHERS UNION Corris members joined us at St Peter s, on a very cold 21st of March, for our Quiet Afternoon. The Revd John Dale led the meditaion on Christ entering Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. We all enjoyed a time of quiet reflection and music, from a Cd We walk His Way John was warmly thanked by Mrs Joyce Price. Please bring your overseas boxes. J.P. Mrs Muriel Evans welcomed members to the meeting and led a short service; the readers were Muriel Evans and Margaret Searson. A card was read out from Mrs Roberta Williams thanking all for their best wishes following her recent operation. A card was signed by members to be sent to Will and Bronwen Jones on their Diamond Wedding Anniversary at the end of March. Several suggestions were put forward for the annual trip in May the final decision will be made by the officials. Muriel Evans introduced Elwyn and Rhian Hughes who spoke about their keen interest in old farm machinery. Rhian s interest stemmed from the time she bought a Lister B engine and has grown into collecting shearing implements. She gave a brief but very interesting insight into the history of shearing from the 14 th century to the present. Elwyn and Rhian were thanked by Llinos Davies. The tea hostesses were Muriel Evans and Margaret Searson. The next meeting will be on Tuesday the 9 th April. 04

5 News around the Parish Table-Top Sale. A few members of Holy Trinity Church Corris attended a Table at the Table-Top Sale in the Corris Institute on Saturday 23rd February from 9am until noon. Very many thanks to those who contributed in anyway to our success. Grateful thanks to those who ran the Institute Cafe, the workers appreciated a break with refreshments during the morning. Mothers Union. On the 4th March members of the Corris Branch met as usual at Beth Bastock s home. We opened with our little service arranged by Beth - all members taking part. Necessary business was attended to and a choice of gifts was decided on for Mothering Sunday. Congratulations. To Canon Martin and Beryl Riley on the birth of their grandson, Tomi, on the 1 st of March. A son to Pete and Efa. Our love and very best wishes to Will and Bronwen Jones who celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary at the end of March. Former St Peter s choirboy Andrew Searson now living in Mold has taken part in the 3 day Macmillan 4x4 Challenge 2013 and have raised 840 for Macmillan Cancer Support.Andrew and his friend Griff came 3 rd in the Orienteering Section and 16 th Overall out of 60 entries. They covered 1000 miles starting from Craven Arms through Radnor Forest to Hay on Wye then down to Seven Sisters up through Epynt Military Range, the Elan Valley and to Abertstwyth, then to Ponterwyd through to Furnace and Machynlleth, into the Dyfi Forest and finally finishing in Corwen. 05

Elneth had lived the majority of her life in Machynlleth until her deteriorating health forced her to move to her family in the West Midlands where she passed away aged 91. Interment was at Aberdyfi Cemetery. Donations in memory of Elneth were to the Alzheimer s Society and amounted to We send our sincere sympathies to her daughters, Beryl and Dianna and all the family in their loss. THANKS Mrs Roberta Williams would like to thank all who sent cards, flowers and get well messages during her stay in hospital. Special thanks to the Mothers Union for the lovely flowers she recieved on Mothering Sunday. 11 SUPER SOUP LUNCH The Soup Lunch held at The Parish Office on the 6 th March was enjoyed by all and a cheque of 300 has been sent for the Christian Aid Syria Appeal. My grateful thanks to all who contributed to the event. Mrs Margaret Searson, Mrs Joanne Gower, Mrs Joyce Price and Rev d Kathleen dishing up the soup. St Peter s Winter Walks. Once again our planned walk in March has fallen foul of the weather and had to be cancelled. I had considered changing the heading of this page to St Peter s Spring Walks, but with the weather such as it is will keep the same title for another month!! The intended walk was near the Cregennin Lakes above Dolgellau, so we ll give it another go on Sat 20th April meeting at St Peter s 9amThe route is fairly level. using well defined tracks and tarmaced roads and will be approximately 4 miles long.
