CYLCHGRAWN MISOL MONTHLY MAGAZINE Hydref/October c/50p BRO CYFEILIOG a MAWDDWY.
Rheithordy Mallwyd Reading an excellent book at the moment called The House of the Mosque by Kader Abdolah. It chronicles the lives of ordinary people - just like you and me; people living in Iran from the 1960's onwards, facing change and threats to their traditional culture and values. Radio, cinema, television, even education, are altering the way people see the world, and challenging the centrality of the mosque in their lives. We as a church / chapel community have faced exactly the same dilemmas, with the inexorable rise of secularism. But there the similarity between east and west ends. We in the western churches have tried to adapt to secularism; we are still struggling with that process, still feeling our way, still working to try and make ourselves relevant, even noticed in our modern society; still trying to share the Good News of the Gospel in a liberal society which has the freedom to accept, ignore or reject us. However, things have turned out very differently in Islamic Iran. In order to fight secularism they have embraced Islamic revolution, and returned to their hard line fundamentalist roots, and woe betide anyone who stands in their way! Why such a different response in Iran, a country whose majority population, just like us, want to get on with their lives quietly and peacefully? Are Iranians less civilised than us? Is their faith harsher, crueller, less tolerant than ours? Actually there is one fundamental difference between the recent histories of Iran compared to the West. In Iran the perceived threat of secularism was / is blamed almost exclusively on what Iranians would describe as a foreign interventionist threat, from The Great Evil America. The hatred of America galvanised the young and the extremist elements in Iranian society. It became a rallying call in the battle to oust the western looking, American backed Shah. The Ayatollahs sold a vision of a simpler, purer Islamic utopia. Most Iranians, like most westerners, were happy to slowly, gently and peacefully embrace the benefits of secularism, but the extremists used American interference to foster first hate and then a revolution. The rest, as they say, is history. 1
What lessons can we learn from this? We need to be oh so careful before we go interfering in other countries' affairs, however well meaning and self righteous we may feel. I would suggest that we should always try to lead by good example, and give time (maybe a very long time) for the moderate majority in any country in which we want to excert influence, to rise to the surface. Sounds idealistic I know, but Jesus told us to turn the other cheek and walk the extra mile, not prop up, (or even tear down) corrupt leaders and drop bombs. Rev Roland Barnes. The Cheese and Wine evening at St Peter s was enjoyed by a host of people from the community. They were able to view the new facilities while enjoying a glass of wine, company and a chat. 2
Undeb y Mamau / Mothers' Union On Thursday the 15 th September 11 members celebrated Holy Eucharist at St Peters conducted by the Rev Kath, the lesson was read by the Enrolling member Mrs Gweda Price who also assisted at the Communion. The service was followed by the AGM in the Mezzanine Hall on the first floor. The enrolling member welcomed everyone to our new home. New members were welcomed by the Rev Roland Barnes and Mrs Sandra Wheeler. Sadly 5 members have passed away during the Summer, including 2 from our own branch, all stood in silent memory. Mr and Mrs Ronnie Price were congratulated on becoming Great Grandparents for the second time. The diary for was read out, we had a very busy year with all the celebrations, including a visit from the World Wide President Mrs Lynne Tembeuy on the 5th July at Penrhyndeudraeth. The anniversary cake was cut by Lynne and Jenny Lane, and made by Mrs Margaret Searson. (see photo's overleaf) The Rev Kath was warmly thanked for the service on the day, the Mary Summer Day and the Blessed Virgin Mary service. The Secretary and Treasurer were thanked for all the work they do, and all the members for their loyalty and support towards the Mothers Union. Thanks to Mr Ken Searson for driving the mini bus when needed, he has now retired, so thanks once again. The officials were voted in En Bloc for another year. The next meeting will be on Thursday 20th October ay 2 o clock in in St peters Church.. The speaker will be Mrs Ruth Jenkins. 3

Learning to walk with God in prayer. He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples. Lk ch 11v1. This is a short course of four weeks on learning to pray. Over four sessions of 1.30 hours you will experience, four different ways to pray. This will be a chance to stop and be still with God, a time reflect on scripture with your heart, a time to use our imagination in prayer and a time to reflect on your journey with God each day. No experience necessary. If you want to learn more or book a place please contact Fr Dominic McClean At St Peters Church Machynlleth Thursday 3rd November 6.30pm until 8 pm Wednesday 9th November 6.30 pm until 8 pm Wednesday 16th November 6.30 pm until 8 pm Wednesday 23rd November 6.30 pm until 8 pm Jen Evans, Susan Jones and John Rogers The three organists who entertained at St Peter s Church on Wednesday 2 September in the Sponsored Organ Play to raise funds for the Ministry Area. 9
News around Ministry Area. Corris Mothers Union On Monday 5th September Corris branch held a fundraising tea at Joanne & Chris Gower s home in Upper Corris. We were joined by members of our link branch Porthmadog and members from Machynlleth who came up on the bus which was a bit hair-raising! But all arrived safely. The weather kept us indoors so we were very snug with over 20 in the conservatory. It was nice for members of different branches to get to know each other. I have had comments back from all branches saying how nice it was to meet new faces. Donations for the tea came to 103 this will go to the 140th Appeal which to July has so far raised 1.1 million. The target is 1.4 million so it looks like it will exceed that figure. The Mother Union Enterprise stall raised 116. A very big Thank You to all all were able to come and support Mothers Union. Joanne Gower - Corris Branch. Llongyfarchiadau a phob bendith i Dewi ac Elen Pugh ar eu priodas yn Eglwys Sant Ust a Sant Dyfrig, Llanwrin ar Medi 24ain. 10

St Peter s Plodders. October Walk Llanstumdwy (5 miles) Saturday 8th October. Catching the 08:52 train to Cricceth we will walk part of the coastal path towards Pwllheli. Turning inland to Llanstumdwy we will have a chance to visit the Lloyd George Museum before continuing our walk past his memorial and returning to Cricceth via an alternative route. Our September walk was the second attempt at this walk in and around Borth and Ynyslas. This time we were blessed with glorious weather and rewarded with wonderful views. Due to overnight rain we had to negotiate a few large puddles and the tide necessitated us walking on the pebbles for part of the way back along the beach. But our hardy bunch took it in their stride. We did miss the intended train back which meant we spent longer in the The Victoria which wasn t such a hardship!!!! We sat on the decking out the back, looking out to sea and the Lleyn Peninsular. 12
