2 30 Tregarth, Machynlleth. Dear friends, What a lovely day Tuesday the 4th June turned out to be. The early morning sun shone beautifully in London as we prepared to dress in our finery for the service at Westminster Abbey. Walking across Westminster Bridge (in quite high heels!!) we joined other people making their way to the Abbey through crowds of sightseers lining the streets. We thought we were early being there at 9 am but we joined the end of a very long line of people snaking around the side of the Abbey. It was an experience being in the queue before we got into the Abbey the organising was done with military precision! We kept moving forward and before very long we arrived at the gates where we went through airport like security (neither of us bleeped!). We made our way to the North Door and the North Transept where we found our seats. The buzz inside the Cathedral was amazing and we were allowed to wonder around to see the High Altar with the Coronation Crown and the Golden Eagle and to look down the long Nave towards the Great West Door. At on the dot the doors closed and we waited for the dignitaries to take their seats. We were able to see all the Royal Family taking their seats but just as Her Majesty came into view everyone moved in front of us and blocked our view!! The service was simple but very impressive and meaningful. The organ and the choir were amazing and everything ran so smoothly (I bet there were some last minute hitches in the background though!!). Everyone was happy and friendly from the guests to the Cathedral officials to the police officers outside. It was a great honour to have been invited to such a prestigious event and it will be a day I will never forget. With every blessing to you and yours Kathleen 2

9 News around the Parish Corris The Holy Trinity team are busy planning the next fund raising event which will be another sale at Paula s in Corris. It will take place over the Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday 24th - 10:00 am- 2:00 pm and Monday 26th August - 11:00 am 1:00 pm. The No 34 bus will be running as usual to take people to and from Corris. After the success of the last sale, more items, particularly bric a brac and toys are needed. So, if you have an unwanted present or have been doing some clearing out - don t forget Holy Trinity can turn your not wanted into much needed funds tp support the Church. If you need something collected, then leave a message on (remember to leave your phone number) and we will get back to you to make arrangements. *********************** Holy Trinity at Corris welcomed back Canon Martin Riley and his wife Beryl on Sunday 16th June after their visit to their son in America. In his absence, Holy Eucharist was celebrated by Rev d Dick Staunton and Rev d John Dale. Many thanks to both for standing in for Martin. Dick s next appearance in Corris will be a little different< he is part of the cast performing Gilbert & Sulivan s the Trial by Jury on the 6th July - 7:30 pm at the Corris Institute (tickets at the door) 9
10 Sunday 23rd saw Holy Trinity commemorating the feast day of Saints Alban, Julius and Aaron, the 3rd Century Martyrs who were tortured and executed for their faith. They are the earliest recorded British Christians to die for their beliefs. Alban died in Verulamium (where the city St. Alban s, Hertfordshire now stands) Julias & Aaron died in Caerleon, near to Newport South Wales. It is sad to think that over seventeen hundred years later, Christians are still being persecuted and killed in some parts of the world. They need to be kept in our thoughts, even if we can only support them in prayer. ********************* Also remembered in the service on Sunday 23rd was the 70th Anniversary of the Sicilian and Italian campaigns in World War 11. Late June saw preparations for the air-bourne and seabourne landings on Sicily well advanced. The campaign commenced in earnest on the 10th July and lasted about a month before attention turned to Italy. Those who died during the ensuing battles of 1943 and 1944 included a Corris man, Lt Glynne Parsons, the son of John Rowlands and Annie Myfanwy Parsons, who died on the 9th December 1943 at the age of 21 and is commemorated at Minturno War Cemetery along with 2048 other Commonwealth burials. He was the brother of the late Corris organist, John Parsons who served Holy Trinity so faithfully for so long. Anybody visiting Holy Trinity in Corris cannot help but notice the glorious memorial window to Glynne Parsons on the South side of the nave. There were tens of thousands of Allied troops killed or wounded during the campaign, probably the worst toll being Monte Cassino. The number of civilian casualties, including from starvation as a result of the destruction of warfare may never be known. 10
11 St Peter s Summer Walks Once again the British Summer decided to led a hand with our June walk. The intended walk was supposed to be the Precipice Walk overlooking Dolgellau, but due to the forecasted heavy showers and high winds, it was decided that discretion was the better part of valour. A quick phone call to Graham Cox (Towyn) and confirmation that the bridge over the river Dyssynni was now open, and the walk moved to Towyn. Starting at the bridge near Broadwater we then proceded over the aforementioned bridge and walked in and around Rhoslyfian taking in parts of the Welsh Coastal Path and wonderful views over Cardigan Bay. The predicted showers luckily kept away but the high winds ensured nobody was bothered by insects!!!!. My grateful thanks to Graham for organising and leading the walk at such short notice, I shall have to watch myself!!. The July walk will be on Saturday 13th July meeting at St Peters at 09:30 am and is the Precipce Walk near Dolgellau (OSSH ). It is an easy to follow 4 mile walk, with outstanding views over the Mawddach valley and estuary to the west and Coed y Brennin and Cader Idris range to the east. As per usual a packed lunch is required, and dependant on numbers lifts might be required. For further details contact cliveandhelena@hotmail.co.uk Hopefully the weather won t intervene this time. 11
