30 Tregarth, Machynlleth Dear Friends, I hope you all had a peaceful and happy Easter. I love Easter! Following the sombreness of Lent and the journey through Holy Week to the foot of the Cross on Good Friday we finally come to Easter Eve and the lighting of the brand new Paschal Candle from the fire outside the church door. Finally we can proclaim Alleluia! Christ is risen! And on Easter morning I open the church door to be greeted by the wonderful smell of lilies and all kinds of other spring flowers; new life, new beginnings, happy faces, voices raised in joyful celebration, He is risen indeed! Alleluia! I love Easter! The Easter Vestries have all been held and new officials have been chosen; now we look forward to the formation of our Ministry Area of Bro Cyfeiliog a Mawddwy. The Ministry Area Team, which will be responsible for worship, mission and outreach, has been formed with the Rev John Dale as the Administrator and the Rev Roland Barnes and myself as the Ministry Team leaders. (Member list below) A Ministry Area Council has been formed with members from each of the eight churches in the Ministry Area along with the Ministry Team. The Council has the responsibility for the administration of the Ministry Area and the first meeting of the Council will be on May 1st when the officials will be elected. There will be a special service at St Peter s on Sunday the 27th July when the Bishop will issue the necessary licenses and affirm the Ministry Area. As you will appreciate we are going into uncharted territory and there is still a great deal of work to be done but I will keep you updated as things change and develop. One important and exciting development I can share with you is the appointment of a Curate to the Ministry Area. Mrs Naomi Starkey will be ordained Deacon in June and will serve her curacy with us here in the Dyfi Valley. We look forward to her joining us and I ask you to pray for her as she prepares for her ordination. With love and blessings to you and yours Kathleen. 2

UNDEB Y MAMAU - MOTHERS' UNION. Prior to our last meeting on April 10th, members attended the special Easter Service in St. Peter's, performed by the children of Ysgol Gynradd, Machynlleth. It was a joyous occasion. The standard of performance was excellent and thoroughly enjoyed by all present. A short meeting ensued in the Parish Office. Mrs. Joyce Price led the prayers. She then thanked Rev. Kathleen for conducting the Lady Day service, the Mothering Sunday service, and for her excellent address at the Women's World Day of Prayer, this year held at St. Peter's. All services were well attended and the collection on Mothering Sunday was for " Make a Mother's Day". The bouquet of flowers from M.U was presented this year to Mrs. Pauline Davies- a long -standing, faithful member of M.U. Mrs. Price thanked everyone who had taken part in the three services and contributed in any way to their success. It has been decided by the Diocese that the Rainbow Sale will now be held every other year, and on alternate years, a day out for M.U members will be arranged. This year it will be in Dolgellau on July 4th. An invitation has been received from Ladies' Fellowship to join them on their annual trip on Sat. May 3rd. The tea hostesses were Mrs. Joyce Price and Mrs. Margaret Searson. Our final meeting for this session is on May 15th. Please remember to bring your Overseas Boxes to the meeting. M.H St Peter s Charity Shop will open for two days a week Wednesday and Friday - for the summer at the Parish Office from Wednesday June 11th Time to spring clean time to make room for summer clothes time to sort your book shelves! All donations of saleable items gratefully received. 4
THE LADIES FELLOWSHIP. Muriel Evans opened our meeting with a short service with Ann Armstrong reading the lesson. Thank you letters have been received from the Archbishop of Wales Fund for Children and Christian Aid for our annual donations. Muriel introduced Mrs Hefin Birch who gave a very interesting talk on Old Aberdyfi. Aberdyfi saw its heyday from when there were seven ship building yards in the village making a total of 81 ships over the years. It was a thriving port with ships importing coal, lime, peat, salt, cod and Baltic wood and exporting slate, oak bark, wool and cattle. Farming in the area provided a very poor living and many of the young farmers left the land to become sailors in a very hard and dangerous life. With the coming of steam and the railway to the Cambrian Coast the ship building industry and the port declined. Our annual trip will be on May 3 rd leaving from outside the Chemist at 11am travelling to the Talyllyn Railway, with a ride on the train to Abergynolwyn and a meal at the Railway Inn. All are warmly welcomed to join us, there is a list in St Peter s for those wishing to come. A.H. CATHEDRAL FUN DAY There will be a bus leaving St Peter s at 9am on SATURDAY 10 th MAY for a fun day out at the Cathedral. All are very warmly welcomed young and not so young. 10 PAYABLE ON BOOKING PLEASE Names on to Rev Kathleen, Mr Geraint Davies and Mr Ken Searson 5
Update on Mary our Sponsored child. The donations from April s funeral last September, amounting to 1,250, were kindly donated to our sponsored child Mary. I have now heard from World Vision as to how the money has been spent. A field next to Mary s school has been bought for a play area for the village. The PTA will make the play equipment for the area. Mary and her family live in a one roomed mud hut with corrugated roof a new three roomed hut will be built for them, a bedroom for the children, one for the parents and a living/eating room. And finally a cow has been bought for the family which will give them fresh milk every day; the surplus milk can be sold to supplement their income. They can also, in time, breed from the cow which will be another source of income for them. World Vision does not give money to the people they care for but uses the money to give them the means by which they can provide for themselves and their families. I m sure you will agree that it is quite astounding how far 1,250 has stretched and how much it has bought a safe area for children to play, a better house to live in and a means by which to make money to live a better life. Thank you so much to all who donated. St Peter s Church will continue to sponsor Mary, her family and her village. 10 Easter Eve As part of our Easter preparations a goodly group of friends gathered at the old Baptist chapel in Talywern, to walk to Darowen carrying our wooden cross; a Christian pilgrimage taking in the ancient and the modern. Along the way we sang hymns accompanied by Magwen Pughe on guitar, and were given historical background by Nora Wigley; we thought about our ancestors and their desire to come together in appreciation of the divine. We paused at the ancient standing stone, Y Carreg Noddfa, to link arms and sing Can Hosanna before visiting the site of the ancient church, possibly dedicated to St Tyrnog and surrounded by sheep and new born lambs. Our journey ended, rather later than we anticipated, at St Tudur's Church Darowen, where we sang the old favourite Wele, cawsom y Meseia. Many thanks to Mrs Magwen Pughe for organising our music, and to the Wigley family for allowing us to wander across their green, verdant fields. Thanks to Nora for the historical imput, and to Geraint for bringing up the rear, giving lifts to those struggling with the hills! Noswyl y Pasg Fel rhan o'n gweithgareddau ni adeg y Pasg, fe ddaeth deg a'r hugain at ei gilydd o ardal Bro Ddyfi i gerdded hen lwybrau ardal Darowen.Cychwynnom wrth Gapel Seion, y Bedyddwyr gynt yn Nhalywern gan gario'r Groes gyda ni a chymeryd i mewn yr hen hanes a'r modern.caneuwyd emynau i gyfeiliant gitar Mrs Magwen Pughe a chlywed yr hanes a'r traddodiadau gan Nora Wigley. 11 ASCENSION DAY. MAY 29 th. Surely the most tender, moving farewell in history took place on Ascension Day. Luke records the story with great poignancy: When Jesus had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands - and blessed them. As Christmas began the story of Jesus life on earth, so Ascension Day completes it, with his return to his Father in heaven. Jesus last act on earth was to bless his disciples. He and they had a bond as close as could be: they had just lived through three tumultuous years of public ministry and miracles persecution and death and resurrection! Just as we part from our nearest and dearest by still looking at them with love and memories in our eyes, so exactly did Jesus: While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. (Luke 24:50-1) He was not forsaking them, but merely going on ahead to a kingdom which would also be theirs one day: I am ascending to my Father and to your Father, to my God and your God... (John 20:17) The disciples were surely the most favoured folk in history. Imagine being one of the last few people on earth to be face to face with Jesus, and have him look on you with love. No wonder then that Luke goes on: they worshipped him - and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God. (Luke 24:52,53) No wonder they praised God! They knew they would see Jesus again one day! I am going to prepare a place for you... I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. (John 14:2,3) In the meantime, Jesus had work for them to do: to take the Gospel to every nation on earth. 11
Prove it. Prove it they cried that you re the Messiah Wouldn t He come as a conquering king? Not as a poor man riding a donkey How do you think we d believe such a thing? Wherever He went large crowds would follow, He calmed the storm and turned water to wine, The lame could walk and the deaf made to hear, Fully a man and yet also divine. His teaching had never been heard before, He fed the five thousand with fish and bread Gave sight to the blind and lepers were healed, He cast out demons and raised the dead. He died on a cross to take away sin Rose up from the grave, what more could he do? To prove of his love for all of mankind Believe it or not it, it s all up to you. 13 Corris Baby Walks Corris Baby Walks are a Corris based walking group for parents and legal guardians and their babies and children. We meet at Corris Institute each Friday at 0930 for a short walk before returning for tea and cake in the Institute. The group started in 2008 to encourage more people to be active in the outdoors and is still going strong with in excess of six adults and their children meeting on a regular basis. One of our highlights so far has been taking part in the Weatherman Walking Programme when we took Derek Brockway around the beautiful Cwm Ralltgoed. Recently, we have received grant funding from Sports Wales with assistance from Lets Walk Wales. This has allowed us to undertake walk leader and first aid training and purchase some off road pushchairs and baby carriers and slings. Hopefully this will allow us to explore our local area slightly more off the beaten track and attract more members to the group. To find out more contact Elin on and follow us on Facebook Corris Baby Walks. 13
St Peter s Plodders May Walk. Darowen (5 miles apporox) Saturday 10 th May. Meeting outside St Peter s church at 09:30 hrs we shall be driving to Darowen where we shall park and commence our circular walk following the steams of Cegir and Gwydol with stunning views over the Dyfi valley. Lifts are available and a packed lunch is required. Our April walk (photo below) was once again rewarded with dry weather in and around Mynydd Rhyd-galed above Pennal. Even though most of the walk was on Forestry Commision roads, the surrounding trees didn t obscure the views. As I,ve mentioned before, the walk is not all about the views but the people you meet. One member said they could nt remember much of the walk as they where talking so much!!! 14
