Dear Friends, I ve just come home from a lovely morning spent in the company of good friends worshipping together and enjoying a meal together. I have been at Holy Trinity Church, Corris, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Reverend Canon Martin Riley s priesthood. Bishop Andrew gave thanks for Martin s dedicated service to the people of our Diocese as a Parish Priest and as a retired cleric. Martin has never retired and continues his ministry in Corris and beyond. Next Sunday (29th) we will all be gathering together at St Peter s to celebrate a new ministry as we welcome our Curate, Naomi Starkey. Naomi will be ordained at our cathedral on Saturday the 28th June, photos and reports will be in the August edition of the magazine. We give thanks to God for these two people for Martin as we look back on his 50 years of spreading the Good News; for the countless lives he has touched in God s name; for the countless people who have heard God s voice through him. For Naomi as we look forward to the future with renewed hope as she begins a new ministry; as she takes up the story. Martin s ministry will continue, at a slower pace maybe, as Naomi s grows over the years to come. I felt very humble in the service today as I looked at Martin and I thought about Naomi and gave thanks to God for calling us to this place of service. God is good all the time On Sunday afternoon, 27th July we come together again at St Peter s for another new beginning as the Bishop affirms our Ministry Area of Cyfeiliog a Mawddwy, licences the Ministry Team and The Rev Roland and me as team leaders. Please pray for us and support us at the service. with love and every blessing to you and yours Rev Kathleen 2

UNDEB Y MAMAU - MOTHERS' UNION. Members enjoyed an afternoon out on 19th June, lunch was enjoyed at the Rhyd-y-pennau Craft Centre, followed by some retail therapy!! Mrs Pauline Davies was wished a Happy Birthday, members were thanked for raising 112 in the Overseas Boxes. Mrs Beth Bastock thanked everyone for their support towards the Wheels Appeal which raised 106. On 30th July we are arranging a coach to a Flower Festival in Llanfaelog Church, leaving at 9:00 am. We have 9 seats left, if anyone is interested in joining us, pleas phone or JP 5
Open the Book Open the Book training held at Machynlleth was well supported by many churches and chapels in the south of the Archdeaconry. We are very grateful to Jon Price (CYFME) for arranging the training nearer home. This initiative has been very successful in schools throughout England and Wales for some years now and is growing rapidly in our own Diocese. The idea is to tell stories from the Bible in a simple and engaging way to our school children. With a few dedicated people no acting experience needed a few very simple props someone else s rubbish is our treasure a school assembly children are always willing to do the sound effects and in fifteen minutes the story is told. It s fun for everyone involved. The story has not been told for too long and therefore has been forgotten. The story needs to be told again. Corris News Mothers' Union On 2 nd June Beth very kindly invited Corris and Machynlleth Mothers' Union members to a House-Warming Tea at her new home. We had hoped to be out in her garden but it was not quite warm enough for this. However we all managed to get inside and had a very enjoyable afternoon with a delicious tea. Thank you Beth. Every year Mothers' Union members are encouraged to have a garden party or similar event to raise funds for the Wheels Appeal. Money raised will help Mothers Union Community Development Coordinators to access isolated families and communities to offer training and advice they desperately need. Reaching some areas is made difficult by the harsh climate, long distances, poor roads and tribal conflicts in communities in Kenya for instance. The workers support MU members to push for change, helping them to offer marriage and relationship support, set up literacy groups, train birth attendants and teach about peace and reconciliation. We have been able to send 106 as a result of the tea and we hope this will help change the lives of some isolated families in various parts of the world. The website has more information about Mothers' Union and the work done world wide. 6

BAPTISM/BEDYDD Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives. It is a joyful occasion when we rejoice in what God has done for us through Jesus Christ. We make serious promises and we publicly declare our faith. As we welcome new Christians and promise to support them, we are reminded of our own baptisms, and we reflect on our own Christian journeys. The service uses many vivid pictures or symbols. The sign of the cross reminds us of Christ s death for us. Water is a sign of new life as we are born again of water and the Holy Spirit. Water also reminds us of the baptism of Jesus. A lighted candle is a symbol of new life and of the light of Christ conquering evil. Those who are baptised walk in the light for the rest of their lives. As you pray for those being baptised, picture them with the whole Church throughout the ages, journeying into the fullness of God s love. Mae bedydd yn nodi dechrau siwrnai bywyd gyda Duw, siwrnai sy n para am weddill ein bywyd. Mae n achlysur o lawenydd pan ydan ni n ymhyfrydu yn yr hyn mae Duw wedi ei wneud i ni drwy ei fab, Iesu Grist. Rydan ni n gwneud addewidion difrifol, ac yn datgan ein ffydd yn gyhoeddus. Wrth i ni groesawu Cristnogion newydd i n plith, a gaddo eu cefnogi, rydan yn cael ein hatgoffa o n bedydd ni ein hunain, a llwybr ein taith Gristnogol. Yn ystod y gwasanaeth defnyddir lluniau a symbolau byw iawn. Mae arwydd y Groes yn ein hatgoffa fod Crist wedi marw drosom. Mae r dŵr yn dynodi bywyd newydd wrth i ni gael ein hail eni drwy ddŵr a r Ysbryd Glân. Mae r dŵr hefyd yn ein hatgoffa o fedydd yr Iesu. Bywyd newydd ydy r gannwyll a goleuni r fflam yn dangos Crist yn gorchfygu angau. Mae r rhai sy n cael eu bedyddio yn cerdded yng ngoleuni Crist am weddill eu bywyd. 11
Wrth i chi weddïo dros y rhai sy n cael eu bedyddio, meddyliwch am danyn nhw gyda r Eglwys gyfan ar hyd yr oesoedd yn teithio i gyflawnder Cariad Duw. As a church, we are always pleased to welcome adults who wish to be Baptised and young parents who wish their children to be Baptised. This year we have welcomed Genesis Dove to Holy Trinity Church, Corris. At St Peter s we have welcomed Gracie Celyn Wilde and her mother Donna Vaughan and Isla Keeva Harvey. In the coming months there are other adults and children preparing for Baptism. Please pray for them as we pray for ourselves as we journey with them on a road that is never straight and, very often, up hill. We travel the road together with Christ as our guide. The text above is on the first pages of the Baptism Service booklet it may help you to reflect on your own faith journey which started at your Baptism. Parables (Mt 13: 1-51) Secrets of the Kingdom Shared in stories, Stories of seeds and sowers, Merchants and mustard seeds, Treasure and nets let down in the lake. Everyday stories, Eternal truths. Eyes and ears open, blessed to see and hear The secrets only faith can access. Lord, grow our faith into understanding That speaks your kingdom message today, New and fresh In the parables of our lives. By Daphne Kitching 12

St Peter s Plodders July Walk. Hills above Aberdyfi (4.5 miles) Saturday 5 th July. Meeting at St Peter s Church at 09:30 hrs then driving to the Car Park opposite the cemetary 1 mile out of Aberdyfi on the Towyn road. We shall then walk up past the cemetary (lifts up to the top for those requiring) the path from there continues inland towards Bearded Lake veering right back towards aberdyfi exiting by the Outward Bound. From there along the shore & beach eventually crossing the Golf Course and back to the car. (Packed lunch required) Walking can be quite subjective, but I think the June walk in and around Fairbourne & Barmouth was the best to date. The weather was glorious, we traveled by train, boat and feet, and on a day like that the views could not be bettered anywhere in the world. Nobody fell in the water or off the mountain and once again the company was excellent. My lips are sealed as to who succumbed to temptation and had chips. 14
