Bob Setzer, Jr. THE HOLY CHAOS OF PENTECOST THE CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION The Sursum Corda... Bob Setzer, Jr. Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts! People: We lift them to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise! The Words of Institution Sharing the Bread and the Cup This morning, we will gather around tables and serve one another Communion as brothers and sisters in the family of God. 3

4 Please approach the tables from the center aisles. Once a circle of worshipers forms around the table, the minister will serve Communion to the first person in the circle. That person will then serve the person to his or her right and so on around the table. After Communion, you may return to your seat by an outer aisle. If you wish to participate in the laying on of hands (see below), please exit the same way before returning by way of the center aisle on the organ side. If you prefer to have Communion served at your seat, please indicate with a raised hand and a deacon will assist you. The Bread and the Cup O Dove of Peace... David M. Cherwien Lauren Winkelman, organist Take and Eat... Michael Joncas The Chancel Choir; Mary Ann Davis and Nancy Martin, soloists Take and eat; take and eat: this is my body given up for you. Take and drink; take and drink: this is my blood given up for you. I am the Word that spoke and light was made; I am the seed that died to be reborn; I am the bread that comes from heav n above; I am the vine that fills your cup with joy. I am the way that leads the exile home; I am the truth that sets the captive free; I am the life that raises up the dead; I am your peace, true peace my gift to you. I am the Lamb that takes away your sin; I am the gate that guards you night and day; You are my flock: you know the shepherd s voice; You are my own: your ransom is my blood. I am the cornerstone that God has laid; A chosen stone and precious in his eyes; You are God s dwelling place, on me you rest; Like living stones, a temple for God s praise. I am the light that came into the world; I am the light that darkness cannot hide; I am the morning star that never sets; Lift up your face, in you my light will shine. I am the first and last, the Living One; I am the Lord who died that you might live; I am the bridegroom, this my wedding song; You are my bride, come to the marriage feast. Spirit of Gentleness... James K. Manley The Chancel Choir Spirit, Spirit of gentleness, blow through the wilderness calling and free; Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness, wind, wind on the sea. You moved on the waters, you called to the deep, then you coaxed up the mountains from the valleys of sleep; and over the eons you called to each thing: Awake from your slumbers and rise on your wings. You swept through the desert, you stung with the sand and you goaded your people with a law and a land; and when they were blinded with idols and lies, then you spoke though your prophets to open their eyes. You sang in a stable, you cried from a hill, then you whispered in silence when the whole world was still; and down in the city you called once again, when you blew through your people on the rush of the wind. You call from tomorrow, you break ancient schemes. From the bondage of sorrow all the captives dream dreams; our women see visions, our men clear their eyes. With bold new decisions your people arise. THE DEACON ORDINATION The Laying on of Hands All who wish to participate in the laying on of hands are encouraged to do so. Please approach the kneeling rail from the center aisle on the organ side. Then simply place your hands on the head or shoulder of the new deacon or deacons you wish to bless and offer a personal word of affirmation and encouragement. Please return to your seat using an outer aisle. The candidates for ordination are Penn Broyhill, Carol Cramer, Rachel Crosslin, Carol Habegger, Brent Martin, Sam Seifert, and Ed Southern. 4

5 The Prayer of Consecration... Janet Ray Diaconate Vice Chair, The Covenant of Installation... Cliff Pennell Diaconate Chair, In addition to the newly ordained deacons, the following deacons are being installed to a new term of service: Peggy Haymes, Matt Jamison, Judith Kuhn, and Martha Simpson. Children s activity bulletins and crayons are available in the narthex. ABOUT OUR BANNERS In the Bible and in church tradition, the dove and fire symbolize the Holy Spirit. According to the four Gospels, the Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove at his baptism (Mark 1:10 and parallels). John the Baptist promised the Messiah would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire (Matthew 3:11; Luke 3:16). From Moses encounter with God by the burning bush (Exodus 3:1-6) to the tongues of fire at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4), fire is a sign of God s riveting, transforming presence. The Pentecost banner depicts the fire of God s challenge and the dove of God s gentle loving care. The artist who designed and painted the Pentecost banner is our own Bambi Setzer. TO OUR GUESTS We extend to you a sincere welcome and the hope that you will find your worship experience meaningful. You are invited to the narthex for a brief time of fellowship following worship where you can meet church members and clergy, and learn more about this congregation. We would ask that you record your visit by filling out the friendship pad in the pew; addresses are especially helpful.
