Ash Wednesday Service will be February 14th Father Grover will be officiating. The time of Service is to be determined, but we will let you know ASAP. The Holy Week schedule will be posted as soon as it is available. This winter season has been brutal not because of snowfall, but because of the brutal cold, so early in the season. What keeps me moving in a forward movement is the knowledge that spring is just around the corner. Soon, our flowers and trees will be opening and it will be lawn mowing time again. Soon, weather permitting; our back stairway will be going back up, which will be awesome! Lent 40 days of penitence. On the website of the National Episcopal Church, this is what they say about Lent: Early Christians observed a season of penitence and fasting in preparation for the Paschal feast, or Pascha (BCP, pp ). Position 1: Clerk of the Vestry Job Description: Take notes at Vestry Meetings and at Annual Meeting, type up and have minutes ready previous to next meeting. Also, share a consolidated version with the Newsletter. Also act as a Time Keeper at the meetings and try to keep the members in line. (Good luck!) Position 2: Altar Guild Director Job Description: Make the schedule for the year. Recruit new members, help with training of new members. Order flowers for Easter, Christmas and various other times. Schedule the 2 Brass Cleanings - one previous to Easter and one Previous to Christmas. Order new Vestments/Hangings as needed. Oversee the maintenance of anything doing with Communion. There are other things that the Director does, that the current Director will be willing to explain. Ministry Fair -May 9th Holiday Inn, Liverpool Dr. Catherine Meeks, Executive Director of the Absalom Jones Episcopal Center for Racial Healing will be the keynote speaker. A large variety of workshops designed to renew, refresh and enliven you and your ministries. Details and registration information will be distributed in January. Please mark your calendar and your parish calendar for this day of learning and fellowship! We hope to see you there!

With love, Betsey Dear Friends, We are focusing this year on diverting more clothing items and textiles away from landfills and sending them to people who can use them around the US and the World! Thank you for continuing to collaborate with us on the St. Pauly Textile clothing drop off shed project! In 2017 roughly 40,821 garments of clothing were donated to your shed. This was enough to clothe an estimated 4,948 people. This clothing is being used right now by people in one or more of 44 different countries (including the US) to which our clothing is likely to have been distributed this past year. Your congregation raised $2, in 2017 through hosting this shed. We ask that you continue to spread the word about the clothing shed to other community members. 5 PAGE 5 (Robin s Message Continued) has a long history. Originally, in places where Pascha was celebrated on a Sunday, the Paschal feast followed a fast of up to two days. In the third century this fast was lengthened to six days. Eventually this fast became attached to, or overlapped, another fast of forty days, in imitation of Christ s fasting in the wilderness. The forty-day fast was especially important for converts to the faith who were preparing for baptism, and for those guilty of notorious sins who were being restored to the Christian assembly. In the western church the forty days of Lent extend from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday, omitting Sundays. The last three days of Lent are the sacred Triduum of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. Today Lent has reacquired its significance as the final preparation of adult candidates for baptism. Joining with them, all Christians are invited to the observance of a holy Lent, by selfexamination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God s holy Word (BCP, p. 265). During Lent, not only do we plan on what we are going to give up, or even add on to our daily life, we also have our Self Denial Box. This box is placed by the Baptismal Font and at the end of the 40 days; we count the money in there and donate it to a local cause. Suggestions of which local cause are always appreciated. So, let me close this article out, with a prayer from the Vestry Resource Guide: Dear Lord, we elect, but you confer authority. We occupy roles, but you form hearts. We are sensitive to who has power and who wants power, but your Son took his place among the weak. Help us to care more about vision than about viewpoint, more about servanthood than about rules, more about mercy than about merit. Help us to have the courage to lead by serving and putting aside the world s easier ways. Help us to emulate the Apostles, not in the early days when they craved power and preference, but in the latter days after Calvary, when they prayed only for courage and wisdom. All this we ask in the Name of One who led by serving and suffering. AMEN. Discussion followed about Building Loan we were approved still haven t gotten the loan money. We would be borrowing $17,000. New Business Population of Parish is aging with no new young people joining us. Judy O. and Fr. Leon had discussed the idea of a monthly Movie Night and presented the idea to the Vestry. The Vestry discussed the different pieces that would need to be addressed, ie: Sign out front Being on the Community Board Having a calling tree Put it on Facebook/Twitter Special Notes to Families Put in Dispatch It was agreed to do this on the 2nd Wednesday of the month, starting on March 14, at 6:00 PM. We would have Popcorn, Water and Lemonade available. There was also discussion about some type of Music Event, bringing in local talent. Sue G. brought up the issue of the Workmen from the construction company not using safety equipment. Also concern about them having insurance. Mike assured Sue that they had the proper insurance. We agreed that Mike would speak to them about Safety but it is their responsibility to follow safety requirements. Tania M. discussed the Bazaar and the meeting with Julie Reals and Roberta Kincaid. Bob and Roberta are getting tired and the Luncheon crowd has been getting smaller and smaller. The recommendation was to stop the Luncheon, but still do the Select Choir and the Raffle Baskets. Discussed whether we should join the Garden Club and rent a table for our items and/ or use the open date for a Vendor Event. Robin W. discussed the Tag Sale and is going to be using an Application Process, with prepayment being utilized. Also, time to raise the price to $15 for an Outside Spot and $20 for an Inside Spot. Tania M. confirmed that there will be a Oz Fest Booth in the Park for The Vestry thanked Judy O. for her Service to the Church. Thank you to Father Leon, the Wardens and Vestry for all your help and support in Outreach Tania Mousaw The Holidays were very busy for Outreach. Teaming with Barb Buyea, we obtained a list of five families from Bolivar Elementary, and sponsored a total of 17 children and 1 young adult for Christmas. There were a number of gifts that were not take off the Angel Tree this year that St Paul s had to purchase the gifts. We need to reevaluate possibly reducing the number of children we sponsor next year. The Lion s Club again donated a tree to St Paul s and parishioners also gave more money to purchase a second tree. Robin utilized her website to offer the trees to 2 families in need, and we were thus able to provide two deserving families in Chittenango with a Christmas tree this year. Some of our parishioners volunteered to help at the Food Pantry packing the Christmas food baskets for local families. We sponsored the Chittenango High School Select Choir for their incredible Holiday performance at our Bazaar. Matt Stearns tells me the choir looks forward to opening up their Holiday season with us every year! Pastoral Care Sue Gerling Christmas Cards were sent to Betsy Savage,Denise Bordell, Father Joe and Ruth Williams, The Mules, Woody McAllister. Sympathy card was sent to the Stansbury family on the death of her mother Theresa Blaiser. Flowers and a meat tray were sent as well. Worship Ed Hoffmam No report. Closing Prayer: Sue G.
