1 St. Paul s Episcopal Church Chittenango, New York The Good News Volume 10 Issue 6 OUR MISSION STATEMENT Dear Readers: Times of Change November/December 2014 St. Paul s Episcopal Church in Chittenango, New York exists to restore all people to unity with each other and with God in Jesus Christ. Ordinarily this is a space that would be filled with some words from our priest. Mother Kathlyn had her Mother s Musings and Elizabeth continued the tradition until her recent departure. As for me I saw my role as one of organizing the content that was passed along to me; not a producer of content. Well as they say, the only constant is change, and so I thought I would add a little content myself this time. About what? CHANGE! However when I went in search of a few words of wisdom on the subject from others I found (not surprisingly) that there were more than a few to be found, and that they were perhaps of a higher quality than anything I could produce. Here are a few that caught my eye: Inside this issue: Time of Change 2 Our Church Family 3 Special Announcement 4 Prayer List 6 Birthdays and Anniversaries Coffee Hour Hosts Ministry Schedules 6 7 "All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind is ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter into another." Anatole France, French Writer "The interval between the decay of the old and the formation and the establishment of the new constitutes a period of transition which must always necessarily be one of uncertainty, confusion, error, and wild and fierce fanaticism." -John C. Calhoun, American Senator.""The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. Courage faces fear and thereby masters it; cowardice represses fear and is thereby mastered by it.
2 VOLUME 10 ISSUE 6 THE GOOD NEWS Times of Change (cont.) PAGE 2 We must constantly build dies of courage to hold back the flood of fear." Martin Luther King, Jr. In my life I have changed location MANY times, changed jobs a few times, and even changed careers. If there is one thing I feel I know well it is change. I have found that more often than not change is frightening, and comes with some difficulties. I have also found that change has its blessings. For it is because of a willingness to accept change that I have a career I enjoy, a wife I adore, and a good life that includes the company of this fine congregation. St. Paul s has enjoyed a long history, and I am sure this is not the first period of transition that this church has faced. It may not be easy, but I am sure we will come through and find a brighter future on the other side. Dan Rapp Dear friends, we want to thank you for the observance of Charles' 50th anniversary as a priest and for the planting and dedication of the Bradford Pear tree in memory of David Mark Grover. It meant a great deal to Betty, Joan and Charles to be at the blessing of the tree. David's spirituality, like ours (including Todd Wood), is very much rooted in the beauties and wonders of God's creation. A living tree is a wonderful way to commemorate the life of David. Thank you and bless you. Important Information There will only be 1 service (9 am) until further notice. Eucharist Nov 2nd with Fr. Grover officiating. Christmas Eve will be 1 Eucharist service at 5:00 pm. Holiday Bazaar Nov. 15th (Sat.) The Work of Christmas by Howard Thurman When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone, When the kings and princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flock, The work of Christmas begins: (Source: The Mood of Christmas) To find the lost, To heal the broken, To feed the hungry, To release the prisoner, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among people, To make music in the heart.
