1 St. Paul s Episcopal Church Chittenango, New York The Good News Volume 6 Issue 5 September / October 2010 OUR MISSION STATEMENT St. Paul s Episcopal Church in Chittenango, New York exists for the purpose of glorifying God, proclaiming the Gospel and Serving others in His Name, in this community and around the world by the grace and power of the Holy Spirit. We gather together to joyfully celebrate the sacraments, encourage inquiring hearts and minds and share life s joys and sorrows. Inside this issue: Adult Formation 2 Healing Service 3 Dates of Interest 4 Tag Sale 5 Hearts & Hands 6 Halloween Family Feud Game Night Summer Adventures 8 9 Both / And My dear friends ~ The seasons are changing. We approach another threshold in our lives. It is nearly time to step over summer on the one side, autumn on the other. Change is all around us. The leaves are changing; the evening comes earlier and earlier; the air is cooler. It is one of those times we are called to look back and to look forward at the same time. It is a great time to celebrate the Anglican way of knowing that this threshold is not either/ or not summer or autumn but both/and some elements of each. It is not a matter of good or bad, but a time when we know both joy and sorrow at the changes around us. We are looking back at summer vacations and forward to the school year a return to the program year. We can think same ol, same ol, or we can see an invitation to embrace whatever is new that presents itself to us. Is the glass half empty or half full? Hmm, it is both empty and full. This is a time to embrace the new season and to let go of the last. So, no, we are not looking toward an autumn of the same ol, same ol stuff, nor are we changing everything. It is a matter of both / and. We will build on the rich and valued traditions that make us who we are and reach out to those changes, those new things that we enhance the value of what we have here at St. Paul s. Moving forward is much more fun with the combined energy we can all bring to the table here. I look forward to seeing everyone back after the summer break. We can look forward to Sunday School starting up again as well as a new adult formation program and Bible Study. New opportunities for service to the community, sharing our music and craft skills, as well as some new fellowship and fundraising opportunities are coming up. September 12 will be the beginning of Choir and welcoming the children back. We will plan to gather for a Town Hall meeting and share a meal on October 17. It is also CROP Walk day, a great day to celebrate being together. We will have one service that day with a coffee hour from 8:30 to 9 and the meal after worship. Blessings ~ Coffee Hour Hosts-Sept. Mar. 10

2 Mother s Musings PAGE 2 ~ Tuesday Bible Study ~ We will begin a new Bible Study program on September 14, based on the Revised Common Lectionary that we use for our Sunday worship program. We understand the Bible to be the Living Word of God and it is ever speaking new and deeper meanings to us as our own life and experiences change. We will meet each Tuesday morning from 10:30 to noon and focus on the lectionary readings for the upcoming Sunday. We will also discuss all the readings as they relate to us individually and as a faith community. If you are interested in participating and are unable to attend in the daytime, please let me know so I can set up an evening time. Episcopal Church Adult and Teen Formation Ever wonder what does it mean to be an Episcopalian? How do we talk about our church? We will offer a series of programs on the Episcopal Church and what it means to be an Episcopalian, an Anglican. In Episcopal Church 101 we will review what we believe, our prayer book, our liturgy and sacraments and our catechism. We will draw from thevia Media program, designed to celebrate the Good News of God in Christ and the Episcopal Church in a contemporary context. Balancing scripture, traditions and reason, the course content is rooted in the Trinity and offers a fresh look at what we believe church is about, our theology, our strengths and our challenges. This via media or middle road is an expression of what we often call the both-and context within which we frame our understanding of Christian life and the tensions that arise as we face the ongoing changes in our world. Both of these elements are important for those new in the church, all candidates for Baptism, Confirmation or Reaffirmation as well as for those who feel there has been so much change in the Episcopal Church that we would like to review the basics. Classes will take place approximately once a month on Thursday evenings. We will meet September 23, October 28 and November 18. We will cover what it means to be an Episcopalian and how we got to this point in time. Please see the sign up sheet on the board. It is not necessary to attend all sessions, each will stand on its own. You can join in at any time. The Pastor is Calling! As a parishioner I have had two experiences of Rector visits. One unannounced that found me in the middle of bath time for two preschoolers and dinner dishes let to be done. The next one was at an agreed upon time and we had a lovely visit and got to know each other than possible in our brief Sunday morning visits. It is in that spirit that I tell you that I would love to get around and visit as many of you at home as possible. Please let me know what would be best for you. Generally, these visits will be on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Sundays. Let me know what works best for you. I will place a sign up sheet on the bulletin board for your convenience, or please call me. I look forward to our visits!

We walk to end hunger one step at a time. This year we hope to spark more interest in the CROP WALK and in the urgent need to address matters of world hunger hunger that reaches deep into societies all over the world, including our own. One out of seven people worldwide are hungry and half of them are children. A goal is that everyone has an opportunity to participate in CROP WALK this year. We need people to walk, to pledge and to help organize and publicize the walk. We also need a recruiter in each parish to distribute pledge envelopes and track them to collection. Donations go to Church World Services or you can designate where your contribution will go, including our local food pantry. 5 Outreach PAGE 5 The annual Children s Carnival was a huge success. The day was jammed with games, crafts, face painting, a faith center, toy trains and fun food. There was an abundance of raffle baskets thanks to contributions from parishioners and several local merchants. Weather was perfect, (except for the one gust of wind that sent tents flying shades of OZ Day!!). Many, many thanks to all who gave their time and hard work to prepare, set-up and clean-up from this event. Ethel Barber did a fantastic job organizing the school kit donation program for us this year. We collected enough items to deliver 73 school kits to the food pantry for distribution to local children for this year. Our summer bread drive was one of our largest to date, with 40 loaves and $73.00 collected for the local food pantry. The Habitat home held their dedication open house this month. This is a wonderful home for a very deserving family, and St Paul s can be proud of the direct and indirect part they played in making this dream come true. Another home is being planned for this community, and we will have more opportunities to take part. As always, anyone is welcome to participate in the Outreach committee. Contact Tania Mousaw at church or call Holiday Boutique November 13, 2010 The Holiday Boutique will sell gifts, holiday decoration for the home, and baked goods. Roberta Kincaid who has already begun organizing the work parties, reminds us that you can make items at home also. The important point is To Begin Now! 9 Summer Adventures PAGE 9 Some families of the parish answered the call to share how they spent the summer of 2010: Brittany Reals Brittany spent part of her summer in Europe. In Paris she toured the Eiffel Tower all the way to the top at night and felt the view was breath-taking. She took a boat ride on the Seine River which was just like the movies. In addition to these highlights she also visited the Louvre, Notre Dame, Sacre Coere, and the Arc de Triumph, as well as seeing part of La Tour de France. In Germany visited towns around Freiburg and went to the Rhine River where she could see France on the other side. She tried all the different German foods including steaks and sausages, wine, and German beer. The hills and vast acres of vineyards impressed her too. Her favorite activity in Germany was riding up the ski slopes of Feldberg in the gondolas and climbing the ski tower to see more of Germany and the huge slopes. She thought the countries were beautiful, so different from ours. Woody, Jan, Katie, Molly and Carter Woodworth This was a working summer for the Woodworth family. Woody worked and all three kids had jobs. Jan also worked and chauffeured the kids around. Carter played baseball and Molly took driver's education. The big change for the family began with Katie s hs graduation preparing for college. They did hay and gave some rides with the horses. Brian, Barb, Brett and Brennan Buyea What an interesting summer this has been. Brennan got his cast off from his broken ankle. For the month of July we hosted a foreign exchange student, David, from Madrid. What a wonderful experience! The weekend he arrival, he enjoyed the 4th of July celebration. We took him to our camp at Raquette Lake, Boldt Castle in the Thousand Islands and, of course, Chittenango Falls. In August both boys were away at the same time to Vanderkamp summer camp in Cleveland, NY. They really enjoyed the camp experience...mom & Dad survived, too! Sprinkle in a few sports camps (Doug Marrone's SU Football Camp for Brett as well as Sports Injury Prevention Camp for Brett & Brennan), the St. Paul's Carnival, graduation parties, music lessons, and a bunch of picnics. The end of August meant "double-sessions" for JV football have for Brett and a trip to the State Fair. Montgomery, Reals, and Just Families The Montgomery, Reals & Just families spent a week at the Outer Banks in August. This has become a tradition that they all look forward to. Claudia Jensen Claudia babysat her almost 3-year-old grandson in Connecticut while his two older sisters and parents went to California for a week. She hiked four miles of the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania with my brother, some of his family and my dog, Corker. To round out the summer, she mowed and gardened and gardened and mowed. Bob and Gloria Wilkins This summer alternated between driving to visit family in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts and tackling a large renovation of the basement in our new house (which is still not completed!). In June Gloria drove their oldest daughter and two grandsons to PA to visit her 93 year old mother. For a week in July in the Adirondacks we hosted our annual family vacation. In August we drove to MA to be godparents to our youngest grandson, Connor, at his baptism (at St. Paul s Episcopal Church, Natick!).

10 Coffee Hour Ministry: The Gift of Hospitality PAGE 10 Traditionally, fellowship and food have long gone hand in hand. On Sundays our community welcomes newcomers and fosters connections within our parish family during Coffee Hours following both services. Hosting this tradition is an important ministry for the health of the parish. The Montgomerys graciously brew the large pot coffee each week. By 9:15 a.m. host families may set out the accompanying cups, stirrers, sugar & creamers, make a pot of decaf coffee and hot water for tea. In addition, they may pour juice for the children and provide minimal snacks such as donuts, cookies, and / or fruit. Check the refrigerator for some of these items. Also, please stay long enough to clean up after most of the parish is finished. Those from the 8:00 service may consider asking another couple to clean up. Please arrange for a substitute if needed. If you wish to be added or removed from the rotation, contact Gloria Wilkins at or rwilkin3@twcny.rr.com.
