1 S t. Paul s Episcopal Church C hitte nango, New York The Good News Volume 14 Issue 3 March 2018 Special Events March 8th Trout Unlimited meeting March 21st Free Movie Night at St. Paul s March 25th Palm Sunday April 1st Easter May 13th Mother s Day and visit from Bishop Dede Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12 Is it Easter yet? I just want some chocolate Lent here is a description form the Episcopal Church s website: Early Christians observed a season of penitence and fasting in preparation for the Paschal feast, or Pascha (BCP, pp ). The season now known as Lent (from an Old English word meaning spring, the time of lengthening days) has a long history. Originally, in places where Pascha was celebrated on a Sunday, the Paschal feast followed a fast of up to two days. In the third century this fast was lengthened to six days. Eventually this fast became attached to, or overlapped, another fast of forty days, in imitation of Christ s fasting in the wilderness. The forty-day fast was especially important for converts to the faith who were preparing for baptism, and for those guilty of notorious sins who were being restored to the Christian assembly. In the western church the forty days of Lent extend from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday, omitting Sundays. The last three days of Lent are the sacred Triduum of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. Today Lent has reacquired its significance as the final preparation of adult candidates for baptism. Joining with them, all Christians are invited to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God s holy Word (BCP, p. 265). I love history and I think it is important for us to learn our history, or back story, as it were. How else can you forge the future, if you have no foundation on which to stand? I, personally, am trying very hard to do the prayer, reading, meditating and self-denial all which are necessary in our daily life, but somehow are the first things to fall by the wayside. Sometimes, if we want to honor these commitments, we need to get up that ½ earlier to get it done. But, you do feel wonderful and accomplished, when you do! The Worship Commission met recently and came up with the schedule good through June. The most notable event occurring (outside of Holy Week and Easter) is Bishop DeDe will be joining us on Mother s Day May 13th!! We will also be having our Annual Mother s Day Pancake Breakfast, which the Bishop will join us in. If you can, you should come to hear her preach, she is wonderful! Who knows, she might even ride her Harley to church! (Continued on Page 5) OUR MISSION STATEMEN T St. Paul s Episcopal Church in Chittenango, New York exists to restore all people to unity with each other and with God in Jesus Christ.

4 PAGE 4 T he mission of Bill's Brigade is to support families who are in crisis by making their day to day needs easier. Crisis can be defined in a myriad of ways, but our agency is focused on supporting families in Central New York (specifically Madison and Onondaga counties) when everything is falling apart. Whether it's the loss of a loved one and the family that s left navigating their way through grief, a family member amid medical treatment from cancer or another devastating disease, or other traumatic events--bill's Brigade aims to alleviate the day to day tasks of running and maintaining a household, so the family can concentrate solely on the crisis at hand. Our team of volunteers will provide the following services. 1. Meal preparation and coordination to avoid duplication and overload of food. We organize a meal preparation and delivery system from our volunteers. A coordination of meals will avoid duplication of food offerings and overload of food on any given day/week. 2. Errands and/or grocery shopping. We organize the dates and physically shop for, deliver, and put away groceries for the families and/or other local errands as requested. 3. Home Services: We provide basic house cleaning and organizational services within the home on an as needed basis. 4. Small Home Repairs: We identify professionals in the carpentry/construction industry to provide services to alleviate a "punch list" of household items to complete. Small home repairs may include fixing a leaking sink, repairing holes in the wall, replacing appliances, snow removal, lawn mowing, etc Our goal is to lovingly respect the families wishes while alleviating some of their day to day needs, to allow them a breather during their most challenging moment. For more information or to volunteer or donate please visit or call Sue Litera at or sue@billsbrigade.org
5 (Robin s Message Continued) PAGE 5 Elsewhere in this newsletter, you will find the schedule for Holy Week we are so blessed and so grateful, to have to fine leaders of our Worship services in Fr. Leon and Fr. Charles. And the beauty of it all, is that they work together for the glory of God and the benefit of St. Paul s. Thank you both. As we go through this Lenten season and look forward to the Resurrection of our Lord, let us take time every day, to be mindful of our blessings and to hold those who have less than us, in our prayers. And with that, let us end this message with a prayer: O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP 815) Respectfully submitted by, Robin Weisbrod Sr. Warden Movie Night at St. Paul s Movie to be determined Popcorn, water and lemonade will be served March 21st at 6 PM The Grand Church Service Schedule April 15th June 17th Aug 19th Oct 21st Dec 23rd Feel free to join any of us at these services. 6 News from the Pews A February Vestry Meeting Synopsis PAGE 6 In attendance: Sue Gerling, Father Mozeliak, Robin Weisbrod, Ed Hoffman, Pat Davis Absent: Tania Mousaw Called to Order: 6:39 PM by Robin Weisbrod Opening Prayer: Meditation video presented by Robin Review of January 2018 Minutes Motion: To accept the January 2018 minutes as is - M/S/C: Sue Gerling/Ed Hoffman Review of Financial report Reviewed Financial Meeting minutes Discussed options for payment of the construction given an aging population. A point was made that the church doesn t want to have an outstanding loan. If the money was taken out of checking, there would still be enough in savings. The Diocese would take over the loan if the church defaulted. Not taking a loan from the Diocese will not affect future loans. Resolution: To pay the remaining balance from the church fund instead of borrowing from the diocese. Motion: To accept the Resolution as given by the financial committe M/S/C: Sue Gerling/Pat Davis Month in Review The vestry took turns discussing how the last month went. There was a Mardi Gras celebration and a funeral reception. New Business A discussion was had about the Sacred Sites Open House on May 5th and 6th. Sue Gerling suggested advertising it more as there was little turnout last year. It was agreed that a final decision would be in March. Sue Gerling brought up that two church members are needed at every event due to Safe Church guidelines. Robin suggested starting up the calling tree again in order to spread news around the parish quicker about funerals and upcoming events. The Bishop s visitation on May 13th was discussed and the guidelines for visitation were reviewed. The Bishop will come on Mother s Day and a pancake breakfast will be held. Carnations will be purchased by Alter Guild for the mothers. Robin brought up having a motorcycle meet at St. Paul s and a discussion took place as to who to contact, what refreshments to offer, and the best day to host. A suggestion was made to collect donations for veterans. Committee Reports Buildings and Grounds/Outreach Tania Mousaw The stairs are moving right along, steeples to be placed when weather is conducive. More training for St. Pauly shed took place. Communication/Education Robin Weisbrod Gearing up for advertising for Movie Night in March, as well as advertising for Holy Week/ Easter Services. The Bible Study group met Wednesday to decide if they will continue in the absence of Judy Olmsted. Pastoral Care/Worship Sue Gerling Made calls to Ethyl. Said she was doing ok. 8 PAGE 6 Top 10 Reasons to be an Episcopalian by Robin Williams 10. No snake handling. 9. You can believe in dinosaurs. 8. Male and female God created them; male and female we ordain them. 7. You don't have to check your brains at the door. 6. Pew aerobics. 5. Church year is color-coded. 4. Free wine on Sunday. 3. All of the pageantry -- none of the guilt. 2. You don't have to know how to swim to get baptized. 1. No matter what you believe, there's bound to be at least one other Episcopalian who agrees with you. Pride in St. Paul s St. Paul s architecture is part of the Gothic Revival movement. The most identifiable features of Gothic Revival style are the pointed arches. The church also features pointed spires and board and batten vertical siding. Although St. Paul s began as a parish in 1855, the cornerstone for St. Paul s current church wasn t laid until December 4, And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25 "I got up early one morning And rushed right into the day; I had so much to accomplish That I didn't have time to pray. Problems just tumbled about me, And heavier came each task; 'Why doesn't God help me?' I wondered. He answered, 'You didn't ask.' I wanted to see joy and beauty But the day toiled on gray and bleak I wondered why God didn't show me He said, 'But you didn't seek', I tried to come into God's presence; I used all my keys in the lock. God gently and lovingly chided, 'My child, you didn't knock.' I woke up early this morning, And paused before entering the day; I had so much to accomplish That I had to take time to pray."
