THE ANGLICAN PARISH OF ST STEPHEN AND ST MARY MOUNT WAVERLEY WELCOME Lent 4 18 March, 2012 PRAYER Eternal God, light of the minds that know you, the joy of the hearts that love you, and the strength of the wills that serve you: grant us so to know you that we may truly love you, so to love you that we may fully serve you, whom to serve is perfect freedom. Amen. ST AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO,

At Worship Today Prayer of the Day: Everlasting God in whom we live and move and have our being, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you: give us purity of heart and strength of purpose, that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing your will, no weakness prevent us from doing it; that in your light we may see light, and in your service find perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen am (BCP) Book of Common Prayer: Presiding: Mtr Jane Preaching: Nick White Hymn: am Contemporary Eucharist Presiding: The Vicar Preaching: Nick White The Sanctuary bell will be rung 5 minutes before the service begins to observe a time of quiet 9.00 am A Prayer Book for Australia - page 119 Presiding at the Eucharist: Mtr Jane Musical Setting: Eucharist Michael Dudman Introit: Hymn 634 (t. 165) Trisagion: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us. Sentence: The Son of Man must be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. First Reading: Numbers Second Reading: Ephesians Sequence: Hymn 232 Gospel: John Sermon: Nick White Offertory: Hymn 223 Recessional: Hymn 530 People of all Christian Churches, who are communicants in their own church, are invited to share Holy Communion with us

First Reading: Numbers From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. 5 The people spoke against God and against Moses, Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food. 6Then the LORD sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. 7 The people came to Moses and said, We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you; pray to the LORD to take away the serpents from us. So Moses prayed for the people. 8 And the LORD said to Moses, Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live. 9 So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live. Second reading: Ephesians You were dead through the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. 3 All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the. ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness towards us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God 9 not the result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life. Gospel: John And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgement, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. 20 For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. 21 But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.

Given the senior years of many members, it is no longer right to ask them to staff the kitchen for parish events. Their catering ministry has been a wonderful gift to the parish over many years. It has raised many thousands of dollars flowing into parish income, most years used to meet a special project or need. And it has been a wonderful gift of care and support to funeral families in their grief. As a parish we thank the Ladies Guild for their many years of generous service in this work, and pray for them as they continue their fellowship and activities in the life of our parish. The Vicar The Ladies Guild The Guild will be holding a special morning tea on Tuesday 15 May at am. Ms Valda Street, who was the secretary to the late Sir Edward "Weary" Dunlop, will be our guest speaker. Could you please put this in your diary as it will be a most interesting talk. Janice Miller.

Refreshment or Mothering Sunday Today we keep the old tradition of Lent 4 being a day when we bless and share Simnel Cake. 7 February 24, 2012 IMPORTANT LETTER Dear Fellow Parishioner, Have you wondered why the organ is often covered with blue plastic sheets or why the western wall of the chapel is very stained, or even why there is a very unpleasant smell near the organ? The chapel roof has been leaking for years and there have been quite a number of efforts to repair it, none fully successful. During storms water can flow down the walls. Also possums have found their way into the roof and much of the wall staining and the horrible smell are due to these possums. What is to be done? The Wardens have researched and prepared a proposal to: replace only the existing tiled chapel roof with a metal dark gray Colorbond roof replace the skylights insulate the new roof for heat and sound All these steps are necessary to ensure a leak free, possum free outcome by which our building and organ are properly protected. Vestry has approved this proposal and authorized this work to be done as soon as possible. What will it cost? Quotes have been obtained from a reputable and recommended roofing service for approximately $22,000. How will we pay for this restoration? Initially, to allow a prompt start, the parish maintenance budget for will be used (and fully expended). However, major projects such as this have always been well supported by our Parishioners. Vestry is asking if you will support this restoration project in the same way by making specific donations to cover the cost. How can I find out more about this? Talk to a Warden or member of Vestry. How can I make a donation? 1. Cash in an envelope clearly named Chapel Roof Restoration, placed in offertory bowl 2. Cheque made out to Parish of St. Stephen and St. Mary and placed in an envelope clearly named Chapel Roof Restoration 3.Direct bank transfer Westpac BSB Acc No with reference Chapel Roof Restoration If donations could be received by 30 April 2012, it would assist greatly, but if you can t manage this, we are very happy to receive your donation at a later date. Your generous support for the restoration of the chapel roof of St. Stephen's Church will be greatly appreciated. Wardens and Vestry
