3 SUNDAY SCHOOL 5 PENCE APPEAL Once again thanks go to our ever willing collectors of 5 pences. We have sent money to:- The Salvation Army 20 British Red Cross 20 UNICEF Nepal Appeal 25 We have not had many children over the summer, we know most would be on holiday for most of the time but we would like to thank Julia MacFarlane, Evelyn Wilson and Jean Morrison who filled in quite a few Sundays and entertained any children that were at church so that the teachers would stay in the church and join in the services. You will have heard by now that Kirn Gala has been cancelled but please don t worry that your gifts will be wasted. All the donations have been wrapped and taken to our wee shop where we have set up the Lucky Dip. Thanks to everyone who handed in goods to us, we appreciate your help. Another big thank you goes to everyone who brought things for Malawi month hospital packs. Everyone has been more than generous and we will be able to make up a great supply of Dorothy s hospital packs. It never ceases to amaze me how we only have to ask for help and it is given so generously! We have had a letter from Hippo recently so I have included it in this month s Frontier so you could see it for your selves (see page 7 for another letter from Hippo! Editor) I know he appreciates anything we do for him. We really appreciate all the help you have given us over the last few months, sometimes we feel as if we are always asking you to help us supply things but you have all exceeded yourselves with the gifts for the hospital packs and we will have a day of packing them after Cowal Games and will let you know how many we have made up. Sunday School will be starting soon and we hope to see all our wee faces with us as enthusiastic as ever. Our thanks to everyone once again, from all at the Sunday School 3

4 LETTER FROM HIPPO HONDE TO THE SUNDAY SCHOOL Dear Senga and Holly Thank you very much for always thinking about us. We are so grateful for the money we received through John Challis. The money has come at the right time when we have faced disasters of floods and drought in Malawi and there has been a great need for sourcing food for the children. You are always in our prayers and we are always thinking about you. Let me acknowledge that we received some moneys last year through John Challis. I was unable to send a letter of thanks through John because when I went to see him after a week he had already left for Scotland. Holly, thank you for the Malawian money you sent. May God bless you. Our regards to Dorothy Thomas and we pray for her good health. We are setting up a corner within our office where we are putting all your letters and cards. We want to call this corner Kirn Parish Corner. We are doing this to give a chance to the children to know more about Kirn Parish Church and appreciate the support we have been receiving. ECUMENICAL SERVICE SUNDAY 9 TH AUGUST All churches gathered at the High Kirk on Sunday evening 9 th August for the latest Ecumenical Service. There were over 100 people present and we sang about 12 hymns to mark the close of the High Kirk Flower Festival. This was another excellent gathering of Christians from all the churches who were singing their hearts out. I am looking forward to the next service which is planned for Sunday 4 th October in St John s Church. 4 Jim Anderson Session Clerk

5 COG MEETINGS RESUME The autumn meetings of COG will start again on Wednesday 16 th September at 8.00 pm in St John s Church hall. The first meeting will be the traditional curtain-raiser of a Beetle Drive and we would be pleased to see ladies from the congregation at this and any subsequent meetings. The following week s speaker will be Lawther Murchison on the subject of colour analysis. On 30 th September we hope to have Dr Steve Marritt speaking, although as this magazine goes to photocopying there is some uncertainty and the speaker may change, watch the weekly order of service for more details. As ever, we welcome new members to COG and will be pleased to see returning members to our meetings. CHURCH FAMILY NEWS Many congratulations to Rev Grahame & Mrs Kathleen Henderson on their recent Golden Wedding anniversary. Belated Birthday Greetings to Donald Robison who recently celebrated a significant birthday! Also to Nessie Smart, another of our members who had a special birthday recently! DATE FOR YOUR DIARY Sunday 20 th September Special service to thank Rev Randolph Scott for his work as our Locum Minister followed by tea/coffee and home baking. If you would like to contribute to a gift for Randolph please put any contribution clearly marked in the collection place thank you. FLOWER GUILD We are appealing to anyone in the congregation who might be interested in joining us. Please contact Maureen on or any of the flower ladies if you feel you would like to be part of the guild: buying (cash provided), arranging and delivering the flowers. This is not an arduous task and your duty would only be once in 6 months with a little extra help being required at Easter, Harvest and Christmas. 6 PLEA FOR YOUR HELP The photocopying team is slowly losing people who have helped in years gone by. We desperately need new helpers to keep the Frontier and Order of Service going. Our thanks must go to Evelyn Wilson who has taken charge of Life and Work and the photocopying and who now can no longer help. Can you take on the fee collecting and distribution of Life and Work, I m sure Evelyn would help you to start with. If you could like to join the photocopying team, tuition will be given, if needed, then please contact me on thank you. Jean Robison POLAR EXPLORERS 2015 This year s Scripture Union Holiday Club turned out to be excellent material introducing young people to Peter, Stephen, Philip, Saul/Paul and Timothy. We held our event from July 6 th 10 th each evening in the Hanover Street Hall and had 36 children through the door. Our nightly attendance averaged 28 and we had a team of helpers from all the churches. The Polar theme was greatly enhanced by the building of an igloo from plastic milk containers and this part of the work required patience and great skill from Donald Manson, Calum Kennedy, Rosemary White and Ruth Griffiths who ensured that electric glue guns did not injure any of the helpers. We were also assisted by Alan Wright and a number of teenagers super role models for all. MESSY CHURCH AUTUMN 2015 All families and friends are cordially invited to Messy Church in Hanover Street Hall from 3pm 5pm on Saturdays: 19 th September, 24 th October and 21 st November. Art, craft, stories, fellowship and food will be supplied to all. Jen Zielinski 6

7 MALAWI NEWS Many members will remember two Malawians visiting and participating in our services in the Church Centre and Kirn Church: they were Alice and Hippo. The Rev Grahame Henderson and I enjoyed their company at lunch after the services. Hippo has kept in touch with the Sunday School and me ever since. Recently, I received a letter addressed not to me personally but to Kirn Church members which I would like to share with you. Dear Friends at Kirn Parish Church It s a long time since I wrote to you. I hope everybody is well at Kirn Parish Church. I am very glad and grateful to Kirn Church for the support towards the work that I am doing in the community helping children and young people. Thanks very much for the money we received through John Challis. Am really happy and the support you give us is changing the lives of many children in our community. We also appreciate the support we get from the Sunday School. The donation and their prayers are putting a smile on a child far from where they are. Your generosity has brought a big impact on our programme targeting children. Thank you very much. It is my wish and my prayer that one day I will visit Scotland again, especially Kirn Parish Church where my memories are always coming afresh when I think of Scotland. We have two new volunteers who have joined us in providing care and support to children. They are wonderful ladies and are enjoying their time with the children.
