1 Parishes of Swords Clonmethan Kilsallaghan Donabate and Lusk Newsletter May/June 2017 PARISH TABLE QUIZ: The Table Quiz held in The Lord Mayors Pub, by kind permission, on Fri 21 st April, was a super success, mainly due to the ten tables of four who were there to have a fun evening. Thank you to each one for coming and supporting on the night. And thanks also to those who donated prizes for the raffle. But above all, thanks to Derek Evans and his helpers for providing a super evening s entertainment and fun, all in a good cause. Just over 600 was raised. The picture shows the Rector with three of the winning team: from left to right; Stephen Vincent, Mark Hyland, Philip Appleyard, and Canon Deane. LENT 2017: Thank you to those who attended the Mid-week Lenten services on a regular basis throughout Lent on Wednesday evenings in Donabate and in Swords. There were retiring collections at each service in aid of The Leprosy Mission. Thank you for your generosity. HOLY WEEK & EASTER: Throughout Holy Week, the rota of services included Compline on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, The Lord s Supper on Maundy Thursday, and At the Cross, a meditative service on the Passion of our Lord according to St. Matthew Gospel, at 12.00noon in Donabate, and at 2.00pm in Swords. The service on Good Friday in Donabate was ecumenical in nature, starting in the parish church at 12.00noon, and then processing and carrying a cross to our sister church, St Patrick s Roman Catholic Church in the village. We thank all who attended all the services throughout Holy Week, and for engaging with the narrative. EASTER DAY: Thank you to those who cleaned and decorated the churches for Easter, and helped to make the services so much more sparkling and special for the great Easter event. And thank you to all who attended the services on Easter Day it is the most important cornerstone of the Christian faith, and it was good so many joined together to celebrate the occasion.

2 SONGS OF PRAISE: There was only one service in the group of parishes on 23 rd Sunday April, at 11.00am in Donabate to sing favourite hymns with an Easter theme. A list of popular Easter hymns was drawn up, and the eight most popular hymns submitted were chosen. A short commentary on each hymn was given before we all stood and joined in the singing. Even though we sang to recorded music, the joy and exuberance of the hymns shone through. And it was very heartening that everyone present enjoyed the event. Many repaired to Jones s Garden Centre for refreshments (much needed!) afterwards, and enjoyed all the fare on offer there. Look out for the next Songs of Praise, in October, and with a Harvest Theme! GIRLS BRIGADE DISPLAY: We congratulate the captain, officers, leaders and girls of the Company on their annual display, which was held on Saturday 8 th April in the Parish Hall, Swords. It was of a very high standard. All the girls, from tots to seniors, exhibited enthusiasm and grace in the various disciplines of skipping, dance, singing and recitation. BOYS BRIGADE DISPLAY: And we also congratulate the Captain, officers, leaders and boys of the Boys Brigade Company on their annual display, held on 6 th May, again the in Parish Hall, Swords. It also was of a very high standard, with the boys showing great enthusiasm in the various disciplines of team-games, drilling and gymnastics. CONFIRMATION: We were delighted to welcome Archbishop Jackson to the Parish on Saturday 29 th April in St. Columba s Church, Swords when he confirmed sixteen young people. They were joined by five young people from Holmpatrick Union of Parishes, giving a total of twenty-one. As you might imagine, given twenty-one candidates, their parents, siblings, godparents and extended families, there was only standing room for many of the congregation. Our Confirmation Candidates this year are Robben Barnes, Euan Batt, Paul Blake, Chris Burnby, Rachael Darling, Beibhinn Donnelly, Erica Elliott, Hannah Ennis, Megan Foley, Luke Francis, Alex Giles, Michael Gozie, Scott Kennedy, James Love, Megan Neale, & Sam Tanner. God bless them all their days.

3 EASTER GENERAL VESTRY MEETINGS: Donabate Easter General Vestry Meeting was held in the parish church on Wednesday, 26 th April, and Swords Easter General Vestry Meeting was held on Thursday 27 th April, in the Meeting Room, Swords. At each, after the Chairperson s address, each parish received a detailed account of its finances for the year ending This was followed by the election of the in-coming Select Vestry, then followed by the triennial elections for the coming three period ( ) for Diocesan Synods Members and for Parochial Nominators. Results for each were: SWORDS SELECT VESTRY: Rector s Churchwarden: Sam Essandoh People s Churchwarden: Olawale Awe Rector s Churchwarden in Kilsallaghan: Ian Falkiner Rector s Glebewarden: Billy Goodwin People s Glebewarden: Derek Evans Select Vestry members: Margaret Coyle, Anne Forsyth, Enid Hughes & Andrea Patterson. At a subsequent meeting of the Select Vestry Meeting, Enid Hughes and Billy Goodwin were elected Hon Secretary and Hon Treasurer respectfully. DONABATE SELECT VESTRY: Rector s Churchwarden: Brian Scott People s Churchwarden: Michael Swarbrigg People s Glebewarden: Kate Hender Select Vestry members: Peter Maxwell, Albert Pratt, Gordon Hempton, Niall Minto, Brian Allen, Glynis Wilcox, and Sally Beazley. At a subsequent Select Vestry Meeting, Brian Scott and Peter Maxwell were elected Hon Secretary and Hon Treasurer respectfully. DIOCESAN SYNODS MEMBERS: Elected were: Swords: Eleanor McQuinn and Stephen Vincent. Donabate: Niall Minto. PAROCHIAL NOMINATORS: Elected were: Swords: Billy Goodwin & Stephen Vincent. Donabate: Brian Allen & Niall Minto. SERVICES FOR YOUNGER PEOPLE IN THE PARISH: SWORDS: Kidz Own + first and third Sundays of the month, 10.30am in the church; Bangers@MASH second Sunday of the month, 6.30pm in the Parish Hall; Le Chéile Service fourth Sunday of the month, in the church; DONABATE: Sunday Club first Sunday of the month, in the church; Donabate Family Service third Sunday of the month, in the church. All are welcome!

4 BOOKING OPEN FOR D&G KIDS SUMMER CAMP 2017 The Dublin & Glendalough Kids Summer Camp takes place this year in the Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation from July 3 to 7. The camp provides a great opportunity for children from 4th to 6th Class to explore their faith in a safe and fun environment while having plenty adventures and making new friends. The Glencree Centre is in Glencree near Enniskerry and the camp costs 165 which covers all food, accommodation, trips and activities. Tuck shop money is all that is required. The camp is open to all those who are finishing 4th Class to 6th Class. Children can be dropped off at 11am on Monday July 3 and collected at 3.30 pm on Friday July 7. Places must be booked by June 5 th The booking form can be downloaded here. It is also available by contacting Lynn Storey at dublinandglendaloughkidscamp@gmail.com or calling The organisers don t want financial obstacles to prevent children from taking part in camp. A limited number of bursaries are available to assist families in need. Please contact the Revd Abigail Sines on or abigail@christchurch.ie prior to May 6 for consideration. Although the dead-line has passed, you might still like to apply you never know!
