JULY 1, 2018 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Masses Saturday Vigil: 5:00 PM Sunday: 8:00 & 10:00 AM Weekdays: See schedule in bulletin Sacraments Baptisms are celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month after the 10:00 AM Mass. Pre-Baptismal classes are required. Contact the Parish Office for arrangements. Reconciliation: Saturdays 12:30-1:00 PM and after the 5:00 PM Mass. Visitation of the Sick or Shut-Ins: Inform the Parish Office when anyone is ill at home or in the hospital. Upon request, Holy Communion can be brought to the home by the priest and/or a Eucharistic Minister. Marriage: Contact Parish Office at least 6 months in advance of proposed date. Bulletin Deadline: All bulletin announcements must be received by Monday noon in written form. Preparation for Entering the Church (RCIA): We welcome those who are interested in becoming Catholics. To enter a program of formation and prayer, contact the Parish Office. Parish Membership: New parishioners are always welcome! Call the Parish Office for a census form. Web-site From the desk of the Administrator Can you believe it? Mid-point of the year already! Yikes! How time flies! With summer comes some different bulletin deadlines. So, my column may not be as time sensitive as it usually is. Things will be early and/ or late. Be patient! Thanks! This week brings about two great birthdays. Both have great reasons to celebrate! The first birthday is that of our country. In these 242 years a lot has happened. People came to these shores to find freedom from oppression in Europe. There was hope for a new life. They found it and they flourished. Over the years many others came to our shores to find a new life. They too flourished. I think particularly about my great -grandparents and my Grandma Gretz who immigrated here in the early 20 th century. I m sure many of you can say the same about your ancestors. What a great life they had here. And now we seem to not tolerate immigrants. We are separating families at the border. Our actions are shameful, perhaps even sinful. You and I need to do something about it. I don t know what that something is, as I have always been poor in social justice issues. Who can help us understand this and work to fix what is broken? I will put out a call to some folks and see what I can discover. Perhaps the most important thing we can do is pray. Come to Mass on Wednesday Morning! The other great birthday is closer to home. When you see Fr. Lutz on the 4 th, wish him a Happy Birthday! While not quite as old as the country, he continues to do great things for the community and for the parish. God Bless you with many more years, Fr. Lutz! Thanks for all that you do for us! If you read your Pittsburgh Catholic, you would know that we have four new transitional Deacons in the Diocese. Congratulations to Deacon Brendan Dawson, Deacon Tim Deeley, Deacon DJ Egan, and Deacon Ming Li. With our prayers and God s graces, these men will be ordained as Priests next summer. God grant them many years! Congratulations Deacons! Since we are beginning the month of July, you know what that means, don t you? Festival is around the corner! All of us, individually and in our parishes, are abundantly gifted. We each bring to the table a variety of unique characteristics and talents that are used to spread the Good News of the Gospel and bring Christ to others. As our parishes prepare to come together as parish groupings, and as we seek to form and strengthen relationships with our sisters and brothers in the Church, the goal is not for these gifts to be trimmed away and wasted. Instead, we are called to work to unite the many ways we seek to do good in the world so that everyone, youth and adults of all ages, can be support in faith and in life. All day adoration with Benediction at 6:30 PM. Please try to attend and spend some time in prayer before our Lord. With this Wednesday being the Fourth of July, many of us will be BOX having big celebrations and watching fireworks as we mark the anniversary of the founding of the United States. At the same time, unfortunately, it is impossible to ignore the ways in which our country is not living up to its ideals. If you ve spent any time watching national news in recent weeks, you will have heard of the tragedy of immigrant children being separated from their parents. Many Catholic and Christian leaders have spoken out against this practice and it has been halted for now, but those who were separated remain so with little hope of being reunited. We need to pray that these families can be reunited. We need to pray for guidance, leadership, and healing for our nation that we may find a balance between properly regulating who can come in to our country, and still preserving the dignity of all people. If Christ can heal a woman of her hemorrhaging with only a touch of his garment, and can revive a twelve year old child from death as we hear in today s Gospel, he can certainly heal and guide our nation. With Christ s help and the dedicated and determined work of Christians with loving hearts, we can make our nation a land of the free and home of the brave for many generations to come! Have a happy and safe Fourth of July! Tom Rishel Respect Life News On Mothers Day we distributed 200 Genesis baby bottles. We wish to thank everyone who took a bottle and returned it, but..there were only 109 bottles returned. This is a great expense to Genesis. There is still time to return your bottle to the rectory which we would greatly appreciate. God bless you.

4 Great food every night Great food will be served every night of the festival, with the dinner menu changing daily. Dinners will be served from 5-7 PM every night. All dinners are $10.00 for adults, $6.00 for children. Sandwiches and dinner items will be available ala carte after dinner until closing. Wednesday Kick off the festival with baked chicken, roasted red potatoes, green beans, and tossed salad. After dinner we ll have chicken sandwiches. Thursday Steak with mushrooms, mashed potatoes, candied carrots, and tossed salad. After dinner we ll have steak sandwiches. Friday Baked fish with macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, and coleslaw. After dinner we ll have fish sandwiches. Saturday Turkey with stuffing, scalloped potatoes and corn. After dinner we ll have meatball sandwiches. Throughout the evening, more great food will be available inside and outside, including hamburgers and hot dogs, hot sausage sandwiches, gyros, pizza, Hawaiian-style shaved ice, hot pretzels, French fries, funnel cakes, ice cream novelties, and more. Scratch and Win raffle Next time you stop for gas or go to the quickie mart, please pick up a Scratch and Win Pennsylvania State Lottery ticket or two and donate them to the Scratch and Win raffle. We ll collect raffle tickets from now until the last day of the Festival, when we ll raffle off the whole basket of tickets, winner takes all. Drop your tickets into the collection basket or leave them in the rectory mail slot. Raffle reminders Be sure to return your raffle tickets as soon as you sell them. Remember to put your name on each ticket that you return, not just on the top ticket. Return your tickets to the rectory mail slot or the collection basket. 5 Festival July Countdown to Festival 2018 Mark your calendar for the days of July and plan to attend Festival 2018 for plenty of food, fun, and entertainment. Please make plans to join us. Your participation will go a long way in making this year s festival a great success. Help build Festival 2018 Your help is needed beginning on Friday, July 6, starting after the 6:30 PM Evening Prayer and Benediction, as we begin to build Festival Work will continue on Saturday and Sunday after the 8 AM Mass, and during the coming week every night at 6:30 PM. Just show up at the Activities Building parking lot and join in. Refreshments will be provided. For the full construction schedule, see the insert in this week s bulletin. Entertainment On Wednesday, July 18, Festival 2018 kicks off with a return performance of Mike Arnold (from the band Cue Ball) and enjoy an acoustic mix of blues, folk, and country rock. On Thursday, July 19, it s Kids Night, when we ll have a variety of activities that will appeal to the small fry. Things get started at 7:00 PM with performances by dancers from Ideal Dance. Then at 8:15, be sure to catch Al-Mazing the magician. On Friday, July 20, come out and enjoy the North Hills Harmony Line Chorus. These experienced barbershop singers do many local performances, including charity fundraisers, patriotic services, cabaret shows, and singouts at various locations in the North Hills and Greater Pittsburgh area. Then on Saturday, July 21, come out and listen to the return engagement of Kardaz as these versatile entertainers take us from the doo-wop revival to the Beatles, from Simon and Garfunkel to Elton John. Join us as for four days of great entertainment!
