This year we will join St Bonaventure Church along Mt Royal Blvd. This is a SILENT one hour expression against abortion. Signs will be available. Please join us rain or shine. Bring a chair if needed. We need YOU. We will be handing out roses on October at all Masses. This is our annual Birthright Red Rose collection. Birthright is a pregnancy support center that provides alternatives to abortion by helping mothers and their babies encountering unexpected pregnancies. We thank you for your support. Web-site From the desk of the Administrator First a word of kudos to the All Saints Grand Reunion Committee. I would say that the event was a smashing success. Those who attended seemed to have a great time at the dinner, especially socializing and dancing. So, thanks to the Committee for a job well done! As you will see elsewhere in the bulletin, next Monday, 15 October, the new Mass schedule goes into effect. The Priests and the Deacons will be rotating between the parishes and Masses. The hardest part has been trying to figure out how to get my Mass schedule into my phone s calendar. I was finally able to figure it out. Yay! Recently Bishop Zubik asked for the Priests to consider adding the Prayer of St. Michael the Archangel to the end of Mass. I have struggled with this request. Being a liturgist, I understand the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. The council fathers simplified our liturgy. In so doing, the prayer was purposefully removed from the end of Mass. On the other hand, I see the reality of evil in our world. You can t read the paper, watch or hear the news without seeing the face of evil. I sadly contend it s what sells papers and increases ratings! Wouldn t you agree? Yet I think we need to rethink evil. Evil isn t out there somewhere, it is right here, perhaps even in the face you see in the mirror! Let s be honest. When you or I don t live a Christ like-life, it means evil has taken root in us. Jesus tells us to remove the plank from our eye before we remove the spec from another s eye. Perhaps our own personal praying will rid the evil in us to rid it in the world. So here you go: St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. Then the other day, Pope Francis asked people to pray this most ancient prayer to Our Lady, known by its Latin title, Sub Tuum Praesidium: We fly to your patronage, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. See you in Church! Fr. Jim Gretz

He Is Not Ashamed To Call Them Brothers This Sunday s second reading from the Letter to the Hebrews, in reminding us how God humbled himself by choosing to become one like us in Jesus Christ, also highlights for us that Christ chooses to call us his sisters and brothers. Through his creating us in his image and likeness and consecrating us with his Spirit in baptism, God the Father adopts us as his beloved children and unites us with each other through his Son, Jesus. If Christ Jesus considers us his sisters and brothers and is willing to sacrifice for us, then we, who strive to love with the heart of Jesus, should do the same. As the new parish groupings take effect and the interim Mass schedules begin as part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative on October 15 th, we will likely encounter new sisters and brothers in Christ. May the love of God at work in us be extended to them in our words and deeds, and may we receive the love of God from them as we seek each day to build up his kingdom. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. Since the readings for this Sunday are marriage themed, I thought BOX now would be a good time to mention some semi-recent changes that have occurred regarding wedding Masses in the Catholic Church. Back in 2017, the second edition of the Order of Celebrating Matrimony was implemented by the USCCB nationwide. This meant some significant changes to the way the Sacrament of Matrimony is celebrated in the Church. While I cannot enumerate all the changes here, I will present some of the more major modifications to the wedding Mass. The new order envisions the wedding Mass beginning the same way as a Sunday Mass, so there now must be an entrance hymn, although the bride and wedding party may process in to instrumental music prior to the hymn. The Gloria (Glory to God) must now be sung. (This change actually began with the Revised Roman Missal in 2011, but is reiterated in the new Order of Celebrating Matrimony.) There is now an option for the congregation to respond with a sung acclamation after the Reception of Consent (Consent is more commonly referred to as the vows ). While these and other changes to the way the Church celebrates weddings are not exactly earth-shaking, the hope is that we create a environment which encourages more full, active and conscious participation in the wedding Mass, and better underscores the life-long commitment which the Sacrament of Matrimony represents and which Jesus addresses in our Gospel today. Yours in ministry, Tom Rishel
