Garry Web-site From the desk of the Administrator This week brings us two important birthdays on the same day no less! The first birthday is the most well-known throughout the country. Happy Birthday to our native son, former pastor, and cherished resident on the 4 th! May God grant you, Fr. Lutz, many more years. Oh, yea, and American celebrates its birthday too. These United States will celebrate 241 years of independence. Happy birthday America! In the midst of cookouts and fireworks, maybe you could come to the 8:00 AM Mass on Tuesday to pray for and celebrate these two important birthdays. This week is also the First Friday of the month. Don t forget that following the 8:00 AM Mass until 6:30 PM the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for private prayer and adoration. Summer time is a time for vacation, yes, yet we NEVER take vacation from our loving God. So why not come and pray before our Eucharistic Lord. He may have something good in store for you if you do. Friday also begins that important time for the parish Festival time! Construction starts Friday. Now you might think you aren t capable of heavy lifting, or running electricity, or the other large tasks that are required. That s OK because there are little tasks too! So don t be afraid to come out and lend a hand. Believe it or not, more than the work happens during construction. There is A LOT of fellowship that takes place during it. If you have been paying attention to the calendar, I will be away next week at the National Association of Pastoral Musicians convention in Cincinnati, OH. On my way I will be visiting a Priest friend in Columbus. I ll probably get in the most trouble there! Fr. Joe Trapp is a hoot! Anyway, the theme of the convention is: Formed as One: Unity of Voices, Unity of Hearts. I always come away renewed in what I encounter on the national scene. Pray for my safe travel. Oooh, and there s another prayer intention. Months back, the Society for Catholic Liturgy issued a call for papers for their meeting in September. The moment I read that ad, there was a voice inside me that LITERALLY said, You are writing a paper for this. I gathered up the gumption and submitted a proposal. I learned last week that it was ACCEPTED! I was elated AND scared to death! It s my first time on a national stage, if you will. So pray for some wisdom to come upon me, PLEASE! See you in Church! The On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative is entering a new phase as we continue planning and working for the future of the Church of Pittsburgh. The On Mission Commission, a group of over 80 clergy, religious and lay members from across the diocese are studying the proposed parish groupings and considering the feedback gathered from recent parish surveys and town hall meetings. The Commission will offer recommendations that will eventually be shared with Bishop Zubik, who will make the ultimate determination. While final decisions have yet to be made, they are being discerned based upon the input you have provided. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more about your parish grouping and to stay informed. When someone comes into our home, we say welcome. It's a BOX simple thing to do, but it lets the person know you are happy that they are there. It reassures them that they aren't intruding. People like to be welcomed! The Church has spent a lot of time and energy in recent years in an effort to become more welcoming. Many, if not most, parishes now have greeters or a hospitality ministry. Our parish cantors, as well as myself, take very seriously our role in making everyone feel welcome as we begin each Mass. As individuals too, we can work to make the Church a more welcoming place. For example, maybe we can sacrifice our usual spot in the pews so that a new worshiper has a place to sit. Maybe we can help a neighbor find the right page in the missalette if they are having difficulty. Pope Francis, however, identifies the most important aspect of hospitality as listening. Our Holy Father says that in the capacity to listen is the root of peace. The challenge is to simply take the time to reach out to people, and hear their story. Of course, that is the difficult part of welcoming, but if we take the time to do so, Christ assures us in today's Gospel that we will not lose our reward! Happy 4th of July! Tom Rishel

4 Great food every night Great food will be served every night of the festival, with the dinner menu changing daily. Dinners will be served from 5-7 PM every night. All dinners are $10.00 for adults, $6.00 for children. Sandwiches and dinner items will be available ala carte after dinner until closing. Wednesday Kick off the festival with baked chicken, roasted red potatoes, green beans, and tossed salad. After dinner we ll have chicken sandwiches. Thursday Steak with mushrooms, mashed potatoes, candied carrots, and tossed salad. After dinner we ll have steak sandwiches. Friday Baked fish with macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, and coleslaw. After dinner we ll have fish sandwiches. Saturday Chicken Ala King, vegetable medley, and tossed salad. After dinner we ll have meatball sandwiches. Throughout the evening, more great food will be available inside and outside, including hamburgers and hot dogs, hot sausage sandwiches, gyros, pizza, Hawaiian-style shaved ice, hot pretzels, French fries, funnel cakes, ice cream novelties, and more. Scratch and Win raffle Next time you stop for gas or go to the quickie mart, please pick up a Scratch and Win Pennsylvania State Lottery ticket or two and donate them to the Scratch and Win raffle. We ll collect raffle tickets from now until the last day of the Festival, when we ll raffle off the whole basket of tickets, winner takes all. 5 Festival July Countdown to Festival 2017 Mark your calendar for the days of July and plan to attend Festival 2017 for plenty of food, fun, and entertainment. Please make plans to join us. Your participation will go a long way in making this year s festival a great success. Help build Festival 2017 Your help is needed beginning on Friday, July 7, starting after the 6:30 PM Evening Prayer and Benediction, as we begin to build Festival Work will continue on Saturday and Sunday after the 8 AM Mass, and during the coming week every night at 6:30 PM. Just show up at the Activities Building parking lot and join in. Refreshments will be provided. For the full construction schedule, see the insert in this week s bulletin. Entertainment On Wednesday, July 19, Festival 2017 kicks off with a return performance of Mike Arnold (from the band Cue Ball) and enjoy an acoustic mix of blues, folk, and country rock. On Thursday, July 20, it s Kids Night, when we ll have a variety of activities that will appeal to the small fry. Things get started at 7:00 PM with performances by dancers from Ideal Dance. Then at 7:45, be sure to catch Al-Mazing the magician. To round out the evening, we ll include performances by the musical students under the direction of Donna McDonough. On Friday, July 21, come out and listen to the return engagement of Kardaz as these versatile entertainers take us from the doo-wop revival to the Beatles, from Simon and Garfunkel to Elton John. Then on Saturday, July 22, we ll be featuring the classic rock sounds of Blue Sky Band. This acoustic/electric band specializes in music that s easy to listen to and easy to like. Unless stated otherwise, all of our performance groups will do two performances: 7:00 to 7:45 PM, and 8:30 to 9:15 PM. Join us as for four days of great entertainment!
