One last time we are reminded that we Christians have received the Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Christian vocation. The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the account in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to understand what it means to live out our Christian vocation. Paul s letter shows us the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us. John s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his disciples to share his forgiveness and peace, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. From the desk of the Administrator Shall we sing the copyrighted Birthday Song? Well, it could be your actual biological birthday. However, it really IS your birthday. Today is the birthday of the Church. When the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and Mary that first Pentecost, the Church was born. How much we need ANOTHER outpouring of the Spirit as we journey On Mission for the Church Alive! don t we? Let s pray in a particular way for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit on our young men and women who are being confirmed at the Cathedral today. As I told them last Sunday, You are NOT the future of the Church. You ARE the Church! We need you and you need us. Let s be in this together. I have to say, I felt the power of the Spirit last Sunday. I hope they did too. When I think of the Confirmation students, I realize I failed to recognize our Second Grade Students last week. Weren t they so very precious on the cover of the bulletin? All smiles on a really COLD Sunday morning! May their first taste of the Body and Blood of the Lord be the foundation of their growing relationship with Him! I have to say some outpouring of the Spirit is necessary as I begin to wrap my brain around our future. I did tour Holy Spirit and St. Nicholas as well as St. Bonaventure last week. I had previously been in the Millvale church buildings for various other reasons. In those past times, why would I really pay attention to my surroundings? I was there to do something for Liturgy and Worship two funerals for brother Priests and the Dedication of an Altar to be precise. I wasn t there to be nebby! When I went to St. Bonaventure, it was kinda like a home coming. If you didn t know, that s where my priesthood began 24 years ago! I keep teasing I ve come full circle! Though, I only celebrated two Masses in the new building before I was transferred! Seems like I ll have a few more in the future! In light of the concerns that I have had about our grouping, I have hope this week. We begin the regular meetings of the clergy team. Of course, as luck would have it, there are previously planned vacations and family concerns to be addressed by the team members. It will be a few weeks before we are all together to get something accomplished. However, your prayers for the six of us will be greatly appreciated. See you in Church! Fr. Jim Gretz

Ladies of Charity Meeting The Ladies of Charity will meet on Saturday, May 26, 9:00 AM in the Activities Building. Quo Vadis Days What does it mean to be a Catholic Man? High school men, don t miss Quo Vadis Days, two days dedicated to learning more about the priesthood, deepening your faith, and better discerning God s call in your life. Quo Vadis Days will take place at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School on July Includes brotherhood, Mass, sports, adoration and talks. Little Sisters of the Poor Rock-A-Thon Little Sisters of the Poor, invites you to join a fun filled afternoon on Saturday, June 9, 1:00-4:00 PM as they host their Rock-A-Thon at their Home on 1028 Benton Ave, Pittsburgh, PA Like a walk-a-thon, Rockers are encouraged to raise funds for the elderly poor of the Home through time spent rocking in a rocking chair. For the next forty days he promises that he will be with them always and that he will send the Advocate to be with them as they will be called to continue his work in the world. Finally, after ascending to heaven, Jesus sends forth his Spirit at Pentecost to fill the Apostles with confidence and courage in order to go out to all the world to tell the good news and grow the Church. As the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative continues to unfold we are called to prayer for a new Pentecost in the Church of Pittsburgh. This new outpouring of the Holy Spirit can bestow the peace we seek in the midst of change and planning for the future. God s Spirit can also fill us with the confidence and courage that all of us clergy and faithful alike will need to do our part to build up the Church and make it ever more alive! This BOX Sunday is the Solemnity of Pentecost, which is the birthday of the Church and the conclusion of our Easter journey. On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples, which the scripture describes as tongues of fire, and they were given the ability to speak and understand many languages to preach the good news of Jesus Christ. It is important to note that the Holy Spirit did not suddenly appear from the ether on the first Pentecost. The Spirit is one person of the Trinity (more on the Trinity next week!) of the one true God. As God is eternal, the Spirit also is eternal. Pentecost was the moment the disciples first became aware of the Spirit, bestowing its gifts of wisdom, courage, and peace upon us! The Holy Spirit is constantly nudging us in the way God wants us to go, towards the love, justice, and selflessness exemplified in Christ Jesus. It becomes much more powerful and effective when we learn to recognize its presence, just as the disciples did on Pentecost. When we are able to discern the nudging of the Spirit in our lives, it is then that the Spirit can kindle in us the fire of Christ s love! Festival Scratch-And-Win We are asking all parishioners to purchase one or more of the scratch-and-win state lottery tickets and donate them to the festival. The week of the summer festival, everyone will be able to purchase tickets to win. All of the lottery tickets collected will be raffled off on the last day of the festival, Saturday, July 21, Just drop them in the rectory mail slot or in the collection baskets. One person will win all the tickets. MUST BE 18 YEARS OF AGE TO PARTICIPATE.
