AUGUST 12, 2018 NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Masses Saturday Vigil: 5:00 PM Sunday: 8:00 & 10:00 AM Weekdays: See schedule in bulletin Sacraments Baptisms are celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month after the 10:00 AM Mass. Pre-Baptismal classes are required. Contact the Parish Office for arrangements. Reconciliation: Saturdays 12:30-1:00 PM and after the 5:00 PM Mass. Visitation of the Sick or Shut-Ins: Inform the Parish Office when anyone is ill at home or in the hospital. Upon request, Holy Communion can be brought to the home by the priest and/or a Eucharistic Minister. Marriage: Contact Parish Office at least 6 months in advance of proposed date. Bulletin Deadline: All bulletin announcements must be received by Monday noon in written form. Preparation for Entering the Church (RCIA): We welcome those who are interested in becoming Catholics. To enter a program of formation and prayer, contact the Parish Office. Parish Membership: New parishioners are always welcome! Call the Parish Office for a census form. Judy Ketterer Chair, Bake Sale Diocesan Choir Auditions Auditions for the Diocesan Choir season will soon be held. The Choir sings for the major Diocesan events at St Paul s Cathedral throughout the year. In addition to being good singers, potential members must be capable sightreaders due to a limited rehearsal schedule and at least 18 years of age. Rehearsals are held at St John Capistran Church in Upper St Clair. Audition times may be scheduled by calling Doris Anne in the Diocesan Music Office before August 21. Web-site From the desk of the Administrator Enclosed in today s bulletin is the letter from Bishop Zubik that I read last week regarding the Grand Jury Report. I am sure you might have seen it in other places as well. I ask you to give it a careful rereading. I have often wondered when the issue of clergy sexual abuse will be ended. There has to be a reason why it still continues, other than the Grand Jury investigation. I guess it s not time yet. Why, O Lord? Maybe there are still some silent victims who need to come forward to end their silence to find healing. Maybe there are still some perpetrators that need to come to justice. Maybe there are still some church officials who need to make amends for what they caused or let happen when they should have known better. Perhaps the hardest reason for the crisis continuing is that we need to remember to be able to be reconciled and not do it again. I ve often said that our society has become more and more like the former Soviet Union. OK, don t start with politics and Russian meddling!!!! That s NOT what I mean. I think about how the Soviet Union would regularly rewrite history. Oh, we don t like that part of history, so let s change it or focus this way. Aren t we doing the same? We don t want to reconcile our past and so it s easier just to change the past to our liking. Ultimately, we need to admit our mistakes to be reconciled with the firm resolution to not let it happen again. Let s be so resolved! Once again, I say that if any church person anywhere has done anything sexually inappropriate to you or a family member, please, report it. The numbers for ChildLine and the Diocesan Hotline are everywhere. Call the police. Please, do not suffer any longer with the guilt or the hurt. I want all of us to find healing. That s the only way this will come to an end. So, how about some good news? One piece is the festival report. As I said previously, you all did a great job. Thanks! The other bit of news is that our grouping has agreed to accept two African Student Priests who will reside in St. Nicholas Rectory. Their names are Fr. Moses Drammeh and Fr. John Mendy of the Diocese of Banhul in Gambia. Some help may be needed in settling them in to their new life. More details will be forthcoming. See you in Church! Fr. Jim Gretz

3 AUGUST 12, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Wednesday, August 15th, is a Holy Day of Obligation - a day that Catholics are to attend Mass. The anticipated Mass is on Tuesday at 7:00 PM; Masses on Wednesday will be at 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Summer donations are critical to our meeting the needs of our families. Enjoy Books on Sale Each year, St Nicholas Parish sponsors the sale of the Enjoy Coupon Books. Many of us remember them as the old Entertainment books. They are still quite popular for many people and we wanted to extend the announcement to your parishioners who might be interested. They will be available by September 15th. Cost is $30.00 per book. To purchase a book or obtain more information, contact Jan Kopec at So Be Imitators of God, As Beloved Children, and Live in Love The call of Saint Paul in his letter to the Ephesians to be imitators of God gives us pause to ponder what we expect of God and what we should expect of ourselves and others. Don t we expect God to be patient, compassionate, loving, merciful and wise? Don t we trust that God will provide for our needs, bestow peace in our hearts and be a source of courage and strength? Saint Paul, then, urges that our lives reflect these virtues and more so that others will know that God is alive in the world. The context of this responsibility of faith is that we do it as beloved children of God, as beloved sisters and brothers. While family life is not always easy or without its challenges, the family is the most fundamental structure of love and support in our world. We seek to reflect the love of God as husbands and wives, parents and children, aunts and uncles. And as a family of faith this love must flow through us for others as we build up the Kingdom of God. In this Sunday s first reading, BOX Elijah is completely worn out from his journey into the desert, so much so that he prayed for his own death! He falls asleep under a tree and is visited by an angel who brought him a hearth cake and a jug of water, which gave Elijah enough strength to walk forty days and nights to the mountain of God. Many who are sick, suffering, broken, or otherwise afflicted in this life might find it hard to carry on. The Lord, much like the angel did for Elijah, gives us his body in the Eucharist (the bread of life as we hear in today s Gospel), which gives us the strength to persevere in our lives and in the difficult work of building God s kingdom. Jesus compares his bread of life to the manna in the desert. Those who ate the manna still died, but those who eat Christ s bread of life will live forever! We have truly been given a great gift in the Eucharist which strengthens us and gives us eternal life! This Wednesday, we celebrate Mary in a special way with the Solemnity of the Assumption, the commemoration of Mary being assumed, body and soul, into heaven. All Saints Youth Theater Presents: Little Nellie Performances: August 24 & 7:30 PM & August 2:30 PM Join the cast of All Saints Youth Theater this summer in, Little Nellie! Set in Ireland in the year 1907, this moving new work tells the tale of a struggling Good Shepherd convent, a lively orphanage, and the little girl who inspired them. Performances are held in the Activities Building. Suggested donation for admission is $7:00 per person or $30.00 for the whole family. An exciting event for all kids between ages Please encourage your teen to join in the fun! The Allegheny County Park Rangers will host two FREE educational programs at the Etna Playground. Skins and Skulls, Wednesday, August 15, 2:30 PM. The Park Rangers will lead students in exploring the native animal species of our country by looking at an extensive collection of animal skins and skulls. Tracks and Scat, Wednesday, August 29, 2:30 PM. Students learn which tracks and scat belong to which species by comparing these signs to the animals fur. Join us for these two exciting events.
