How are they related? The Suffering Servant of Isaiah undergoes much distress and ridicule, but is able to bear it because he has listened to the promptings of God day after day. The psalm tells us that God listens, too. God hears our prayers for help and is always ready to save us. As our faith deepens, so does our desire to do the works of justice and charity that build up the reign of God. God directs our actions in ways we often cannot see, and we don t always see the results. We are called upon in faith to trust that what we do is enough, and that willingness to listen to God s promptings will lead us in the right way. Copyright J. S. Web-site From the desk of the Administrator With the rainy weather this past week, I sure hope and pray we ve seen the last of it! Yet, in the midst of it, I couldn t help but think of old rain songs. One in particular was Rainy days and Mondays always get me down. That one really got right to the point! The old kids rhyme Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day was on my fictitious playlist. Thankfully there was not too much water in the Church basement. Nothing was damaged, to my knowledge. I know some of the Dewey Street neighbors were having a harder time with the water level. Think positive thoughts, right? Well, speaking of prayer, I invite you to a special time of prayer this week. It will take place Monday evening, 17 September at 7:00 PM. We will have exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, a Liturgy of the Word, quiet time, and then Benediction. Immediately afterwards, once I can take off my vestments, we will have a town hall meeting. This evening is being called a Time of Healing and Prayer. The staff and I talked about the need for such an evening. The clergy abuse crisis has hit all of us hard this last month. The difficulty in personally knowing some of the Predator Priests. The absolute anguish of the victims who suffered the abuse as well as the effect on their immediate family. The Bishops and Priests who should have known and cared better for the flock entrusted to them. The good Priests stigmatized by the bad ones. The anger brought against the Church. The anger within the Church. The finger pointing that continues to take place. I think we need a moment to be humbly before our God to begin to bring this horrific chapter to a close. I hope you can come on Monday. It will be worth your time. Finally, remember that the All Saints School Grand Reunion is taking place on September 29th. I know a lot of work has been put into making this event successful. I do want to call your attention to an important fact about the event. We will have earlier Mass that evening. Mass on September 29, 2018 will be at 4:00 PM rather than 5:00. Why? Last year when this event was being planned, there was to have been a new Mass schedule in effect. As you know, there IS a new schedule beginning on 15 October! So Mass on 9/29/2018 is at 4:00 PM. Got it? I will remind you next Sunday too! See you in Church! Fr. Jim Gretz

My name is Jonah Soucy, and I am the youth minister at St. Bonaventure Parish. I am writing today to let you know about our weekly high school youth group. We meet from 7-9 PM every Wednesday night. If you have any children or grandchildren in high school (or you are in high school yourself), please feel free to pass this information along! The youth group is an excellent place to make new friends and learn more about the faith. The format for the night is usually minutes of social time/fellowship. Free food and drink is provided (almost always pizza). After that, we will dive into the topic for the evening with a dynamic talk or video, then break into small groups to discuss and let it sink in. We end every night with some kind of prayer, such as praise and worship, a decade of the rosary, time in adoration, etc. The meeting place is in "The Pit", a.k.a. our youth room, which is in the basement of the St. Bonventure parish office building. To get there, come around behind the office building by either parking in front and walking around, or pull around behind the church into the back parking lot and drive up the road until you see the big open storm doors which lead down to the basement. More information can be found at stbonaventureym.com. My is youthministry@stbonaventureparish.org, and I am available to answer any questions. God bless! Come & See High school men: come to encounter the Lord through Come and See, a day of prayer, fun, and brotherhood on Saturday, September 29, 10:00 AM-8:00 PM at St Paul Seminary. The day will include Mass, adoration, games, a cookout, a bonfire, and dynamic talks with Fr Mike Ackerman, Fr Tom Sparacino and diocesan seminarians. No Cost. To register, please Theresa Sullivan at tsullivan@diopitt.org by September 21. Memorial to the Unborn Help is needed to set up the crosses for the Memorial to the Unborn at St Bonaventure on Thursday, September 27, at 4:30 PM. Anyone willing and physically able to help is appreciated! Any amount of time is appreciated! Mallets (not hammer) are used to set up crosses - please bring if you have one. Call or text Dawn Merhaut at Who Do You Say That I Am? Faith is not lived in a vacuum. In fact, so much about our faith seeks to unite us as a community of believers. The celebrations of the Sacraments, for instance, are an opportunity for gathering as people of faith to share in the life of Christ that draws us together as his sisters and brothers. Even a Sacrament that is celebrate alone, like reconciliation, restores unity among the people of God which is broken by our sinfulness. Yet, while we support each other in faith, we can speak for others about our desire to follow God. At Mass we announce, I confess to almighty God, and we profess, I believe in one God, in order to make manifest the faith in our hearts. Thankfully, these words echo with all those gathered around us to remind us that we are never alone in this journey ever closer to God. On Mission for The Church Alive! is an opportunity for us to be confirmed in our faith so that we can confidently proclaim that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. At the same time, it is a call to unite us more closely to God and others to strengthen and grow the Church. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. St. James tells us in this BOX Sunday s second reading that faith without works is dead. In the Gospel, we hear Jesus instruct the crowd and his disciples that to follow him we must deny ourselves and take up our cross. The message here is that we must ACT. It is not enough to simply say and pray the right things, and avoid doing things that are wrong. We must be doers and not hearers only! When we hear about people here in this country, or in other countries who are poor, who can t afford clothing, food, shelter, or health care yes, we must pray for them continuously. We must also act in some way, however small, to help improve their situation, whether that be donating to charities that directly assist them, volunteering for institutions like soup kitchens that provide food for those who need it, or donating unwanted food or clothing to organizations that distribute them to those less fortunate. That is just one example of how we can improve our orthopraxis (right living), take up our cross, and turn our faith into works that shine the light of Christ like a beacon to the world! Yours in ministry, Tom Rishel Etna Celebrating 150 Years! Friday, 9/21: 5:00 PM Emmanuel Lutheran Church Dinner; 7-11:00 PM Cocktail Fugh Hall; 9:00 PM Fireworks.
