ALL SOULS DAY MASS AT FAIRFAX MEMORIAL PARK Please join Bishop Burbidge and brother priests as he celebrates a Mass of Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 2, at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Road in Fairfax. NATURALIZATION WORKSHOP Catholic Charities Hogar Immigrant Services will host a citizenship assistance workshop in Arlington. Citizenship is available for legal permanent residents who have been in the U.S. for five years, and is an important option for immigrants who want to stay in the U.S. permanently. The workshop will be held Saturday November 3, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Clarendon Presbyterian Church, 1305 N Jackson Street Arlington. TOLTON: FROM SLAVE TO PRIEST In honor of Black Catholic History Month, the Archdiocese of Washington and the Diocese of Arlington are sponsoring "Tolton: From Slave to Priest", from St. Luke Productions. Mark s Gospel wastes no words. Neither does the Jesus we see today. The previous readings help set the scene. Isaiah s writings and the Psalm recollecting the end of Babylonian captivity speak about the marvelous change from utter despair to unbounded happiness. Those that sow in sorrow, will reap in joy! The Letter to the Hebrews continues the description of Jesus as High Priest we heard last week. Jesus is the one who knows our sufferings intimately because of his own sufferings. Therefore, he is not one removed from us. Also, his status of High Priest is not meant to be one above us, but an example of sacrificial service that glorifies not himself, but the Father. It is easy to experience the joy of the first part. Imagine Bartimaeus, who through faith was given sight and followed Jesus along the way. But more intimately, he experienced the pity of Jesus and the power of having his wish granted. The way Bartimaeus followed leads to the cross. The faith that saved him, is the same faith needed to see the glory of God raised up in Jesus sacrifice on the Cross. Do you ever call out to God? What is it you wish for? Take courage. Get up! 6 A word from the Pastor Fr. J.D. Jaffe As this month of October dedicated to Respect Life comes to an end, and we approach All Saints Day and All Souls Day, I feel it might be worth discussing what we mean when we say that we, as a Church are Pro-Life. Too often I find that people want to reduce the concept of being Pro-Life to a list of political policies (abortion, assisted suicide, capital punishment, contraception, eugenics, euthanasia, etc.) Yes, it is true that we hope and pray that the laws of all countries may be in harmony with the law of God. But at its very core, the idea of Pro- Life goes beyond a mere focus on this country and it laws. To be Pro-Life is to be focused on the positive good of every single person and the dignity of every single life. When we say that we are Pro-Life as a Church, we are really saying that we uphold the truth that every single human being has value, is important and has dignity. It is a testimony that God created us in His image after his Likeness and we have been created good! Each one of us is uniquely created by God to be an image of God in the world. This means that as I look out at you all during mass, I not only see you, but I also see something of God the creator. Like the brush strokes of the master left on his canvas, or the fingerprints of the divine creator left upon his creation. How much more this is true with human beings who were not only created by God but also created to be like Him, images of God. If we define our life by what we do, what we have accomplished, then we reduce ourselves to a simple function of what we produce. If we produce something good than we have value and if we do not than we have no value. As human beings, created in God s image and likeness, this is far too simplistic of an outlook on our purpose. There is no other you in this whole world. You are unique and irreplaceable. There is bound to be someone smarter, stronger, or faster than you, or who can drive better, write better, or sing better than you. There is likely someone you think looks better, acts better or is even holier than you. But nevertheless, they are not a better you than you because no matter what they can do they simply cannot be you. We forget this dignity that we have in being a unique image and likeness of God. No one else can see the world from your perspective, think about things from your mindset or love from your heart. You are unique and irreplaceable; created by God, in the image of God, to be with God forever in heaven. As we all approach All Saints Day and All Souls Day it is an opportunity for us to be truly Pro-Life. On All Saints Day, we celebrate every soul that is in heaven, not just the declared/canonized saints, but every human being that has made it there. On All Souls Day we pray for all those who have died and are not yet in Heaven, all the souls in purgatory in need of God s cleansing mercy. This is one moment in our year when we remember every single life that has ever gone before us and we pray with or for them. No one goes unnoticed, unappreciated or un-prayed for on these two days. All Saints Day and All Souls Day are the two perfect days to conclude an entire month that has been dedicated to reminding us to be a little more focused on people, individuals and the importance of each and every single one of us to God. May All the Saints pray for us and May All the Souls of the faithfully departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.
