Wednesday, ten (10) days in advance of the weekend of publication. PARISH REGISTRATION: Welcome all new families and individuals. Membership is a condition for the reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion at St. Benedict, and for the parish to issue a sponsorship certificate for those asked to be sacramental sponsors. You must be a registered, contributing member for at least three (3) months before a certificate will be given. Registration forms are available in the Parish Office. SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK: If you are seriously ill, going in for surgery or weak from old age, you may receive the sacrament of the anointing of the sick. Please contact Fr. Duong if you desire to receive this sacrament. HOSPITAL & NURSING HOME & SHUT-IN VISITS: If you or any members of your family are sick and in the hospital or a nursing home, and you d like Communion brought to them, please call the Parish Office. FAITH FORMATION: All classes from Pre-K to High School are on Sundays from 9:30-10:30am in the Parish Hall. For more information call Lynne McGrath. 5 PARISH NEWS DSA 2018 DIOCESAN SUPPORT APPEAL (DSA) We are now 9 months into the Diocesan Support Appeal campaign, and as of today 76 of our parishioners have contributed. We need each of you to help us reach our goal of $23, Thank you. PRIEST S RETIREMENT & BENEFIT COLLECTION: The dedicated priests who served us in the past (You may want to mention former pastors or parochial vicars who are now retired.) now deserve to live out their retirement years in dignity. Our parish has been assessed $ for the priests retirement and benefits plans. This amount is slightly less than two times the regular weekend offertory. Please be as generous as you can in this second collection, which will be taken in our parish this weekend, September Additional envelopes are available in the parish office. The prayer was recited after every mass throughout the world until In 1994 Saint Pope John Paul II, again recommended this prayer not be forgotten and to pray it to obtain help in the battle "against forces of darkness and against the spirit of this world". Even today, exorcist recommend this prayer to combat evil. The scandal with in our "Holy Catholic Church", the dreadful sins of some of our priest, bishops and cardinals, evil has continued. In order to help combat this evil today, we at St. Benedicts, as a prayerful community of faith will begin praying this powerful prayer to St Michael after all Masses. May God in His merciful love help, heal and protect all victims of sexual abuse. ****** From NOW on, we will say The prayer to St. Michael the Archangel after all masses daily and weekend. 7 BISHOP JUGIS' EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS COMMENTS ON TURMOIL IN THE CHURCH As we come to this closing Mass of our Eucharistic Congress, we come with intention of offering prayers of reparation for the horrible sins of abuse and misconduct, and the sins of the abuse of power and authority that have been committed within our beloved Church. Three weeks ago, I was celebrating the installation of a new pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in High Point, Oblate Father Peter Leonard. And in my homily for that Mass I said to the faithful, This week we have been presented with scandalous revelations of the sin of sexual misconduct and sex abuse on the part of leaders in the Catholic Church. My heart is very heavy and disgusted. We need to pray for healing in the Church. For the Church to be healed from the wounds inflicted by these sins and pray for the victims to be healed of the effects of these crimes committed against them. And pray for those who committed these criminal acts and for justice to be rendered. Since I spoke those words three weeks ago we have all been entirely justified in our continuing expressions of shame, anger, disappointment, disgust and feelings of betrayal. I share your sorrow and I am truly sorry for these crimes that have been perpetrated against the innocent. This abuse imprints lifelong scars on its victims, in addition the entire Church has been very seriously wounded. To begin to repair and restore trust I agree completely with the president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops that there must be a Vatican visitation and investigation and the appointment of an independent national lay commission with the authority to follow all leads wherever the truth may lead. And we must support these efforts with our prayers and with our own serious commitments to pursue radical holiness in our own lives. In this Eucharistic Congress, the whole family of the Diocese of Charlotte; clergy, consecrated religious and lay faithful from all parishes of the diocese, schools and ministries have come together and with one united voice, beseech the most Holy Trinity to have mercy on the Church and grant the grace of cleansing and purification and renewal. May the Most Holy Trinity, the God of mercy receive the sacrifice of love which we offer Him for these most urgent intentions. QUESTION OF THE WEEK: How am I denying myself? What is the cross I am bearing at this point in my life? With the grace of God, am I willing to carry it? 7
