PARISH REGISTRATION: Welcome all new families and individuals. Membership is a condition for the reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion at St. Benedict, and for the parish to issue a sponsorship certificate for those asked to be sacramental sponsors. You must be a registered, contributing member for at least three (3) months before a certificate will be given. Registration forms are available in the Parish Office. SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK: If you are seriously ill, going in for surgery or weak from old age, you may receive the sacrament of the anointing of the sick. Please contact Fr. Duong if you desire to receive this sacrament. HOSPITAL & NURSING HOME & SHUT-IN VISITS: If you or any members of your family are sick and in the hospital or a nursing home, and you d like Communion brought to them, please call the Parish Office. FAITH FORMATION: All classes from Pre-K to High School are on Sundays from 9:30-10:30am in the Parish Hall. For more information call Lynne McGrath. Sharing all of our gifts, our time in prayer, our talent in charitable works and our treasure to support Church needs helps us keep God first in everything. It helps us from putting other gods before God. It helps us to use our gifts for the glory of God and not for our own honor. LEAVE A LEGACY: Giving through an endowment means that your gift does not stop. As you enter eternal life, so too does your gift since endowments exist in perpetuity. 4

5 PARISH NEWS Your DSA 2019 DIOCESAN SUPPORT APPEAL (DSA) We are now ten weeks into the Diocesan Support Appeal campaign, and as of today 39 of our parishioners have contributed. We need each of you to help us reach our goal. You may complete a pledge envelope and return to the Parish Office or go to charlottediocese.org/dsa to make a gift online. Our DSA 2019 assessment is $23, SEMINARIAN EDUCATION EASTER SUNDAY COLLECTION: We ask for your generous response to the second collection which will be taken in all churches of our diocese on Easter weekend. We currently have 36 young men studying for the priesthood at St. Joseph Seminary in here Charlotte, the Pontifical College Josephinum Seminary in Ohio, and at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. We look forward to the time when they will be able to begin their service as priests in the Diocese of Charlotte. EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS: DID YOU KNOW? The Charlotte Diocese will offer its annual Eucharistic Congress on September 6 & 7, 2019, and will feature engaging nationally-known speakers whose talks focus on the different dimensions of the Eucharist, a Eucharistic Procession through the streets of Charlotte, break-out sessions for all ages, beautiful sacred music, time for Confession, and Holy Mass. All are welcome! PENANCE SERVICE: St. Benedict's penance service will be on Monday, April 8 th at 6:30PM. Let us come and prepare for Easter. ***ATTENTION MINISTERS: We need more ministers for the Liturgy on the Holy Week. Please check the sign-up sheet at the back of the Church and sign-up if you can help. Thanks. CHRISM MASS There will be no Mass on Tuesday, April16 th. All priests serving in the Diocese will go to Chrism Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Charlotte. They ll renew their priesthood vows and promises. Please keep all priests in your prayers. EASTER PREPARATIONS: To prepare for Easter, we will clean and decorate the Church on Saturday, April 20th at 10:00AM. Please come and help us. Thank you. We encourage all adults to prayerfully consider whether this ministry is right for you! We will provide training and support along the way. 7 Holy Week has as its purpose the remembrance of Christ s passion, beginning with his Messianic entrance into Jerusalem (General Norms, 31) The Paschal fast is observed on Good Friday and continues, where possible, until the Easter Vigil itself. Only one full meal is permitted Good Friday for Catholics between 18 & 59. Two smaller meals are allowed, but they should not equal a second full meal. Drinking coffee, tea and water between meals is allowed, but eating snacks between meals is not. All Catholics who have reached the age of 14 must abstain from meat on Good Friday. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Why do we call it Good Friday? In the English language the term Good Friday probably evolved from God s Friday in the same way that Good-bye evolved from God be with you. Why do some parishes celebrate the Good Friday liturgy in the afternoon and others in the evening? Ideally, the liturgy should take place at 3 pm. However, in order to encourage more people to attend, the liturgy can take place later in the evening, but never after 9pm 7
