PARISH REGISTRATION: Welcome all new families and individuals. Membership is a condition for the reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion at St. Benedict, and for the parish to issue a sponsorship certificate for those asked to be sacramental sponsors. You must be a registered, contributing member for at least three (3) months before a certificate will be given. Registration forms are available in the Parish Office. SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK: If you are seriously ill, going in for surgery or weak from old age, you may receive the sacrament of the anointing of the sick. Please contact Fr. Duong if you desire to receive this sacrament. HOSPITAL & NURSING HOME & SHUT-IN VISITS: If you or any members of your family are sick and in the hospital or a nursing home, and you d like Communion brought to them, please call the Parish Office. FAITH FORMATION: All classes from Pre-K to High School are on Sundays from 9:30-10:30am in the Parish Hall. For more information call Lynne McGrath. (Luke 6:35) Easier said than done, right? But, if we are to imitate Christ, most of us need to practice mercy and compassion more frequently. Start with the little daily annoyances that we experience, the unkind word or hateful glance we receive. Instead of plotting revenge on that person, try saying a quick prayer for that person. Mercy and compassion will put us on the path to holiness. LEAVE A LEGACY: Stewardship of treasure asks only a small percentage of income. Many people find that when they trust God and return a proportionate percentage of their income to the Church and other charities, they can live happily on the rest of their income. 4

5 PARISH NEWS DSA 2019 DIOCESAN SUPPORT APPEAL (DSA) Your pledge to the Diocesan Support Appeal is shared with the educational, multicultural, vocational, housing, and social service ministries of the diocese. Thousands of people depend on your generosity. You may complete a pledge envelope and return to the Parish Office or go to charlottediocese.org/dsa to make a gift online. Our DSA 2019 assessment is $23, FIRST FRIDAY will be Friday, March 1st. We will have Eucharistic Adoration with Benediction following the 12:15pm Mass. LENT 2019 IS COMING SOON! The annual Lenten season is the fitting time to climb the holy mountain of Easter. The Lenten season has a double character, namely to prepare both catechumens and faithful to celebrate the paschal mystery. The catechumens, both the rite of election and scrutinies, and by catechesis, are prepared for the celebration of the sacraments of Christian initiation; the faithful, ever more attentive to the word of God and prayer, prepare themselves by penance for the renewal of their baptismal promises (Ceremonial of Bishops, 249) Lent runs from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lord s Supper exclusive on Holy Thursday. ASH WEDNESDAY is March 6th. Ashes will be distributed at two Masses, 12:00 pm and 7:00pm. ENCOUNTER LENT: Join our faith community and nearly 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States in a life-changing Lenten journey of encounter with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your family s CRS Rice Bowl at St. Benedict Church starting Ash Wednesday, March 6th. LENTEN SCRIPTURE STUDY FOR WOMEN: Women of all ages are invited to join us in Blessed Conversations this Lent! The program centers on the gospel stories that make up the Sorrowful Mysteries of the rosary. The study will include prayer, reflection, and discussion designed to "examine our lives mirrored in Mary s as we ponder a different layer of our relationships in each of the five Mysteries by focusing on vocation, community, home, God, and family." We will meet on Tuesday evenings during Lent for this 5 week program. 6 Faith Formation Faith Formation Second Grade Class has prepared for and will celebrate First Penance on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 11:00am. Please keep them in your prayers. CATECHIST S NEEDED: St. Benedict s Faith Formation program is in need of volunteers to help spread the Good News and share the Catholic faith with our parish children. Volunteers are needed as catechists (teachers), aides and substitutes. You don t have to have a child in our program to volunteer. We encourage all adults to prayerfully consider whether this ministry is right for you! We will provide training and support along the way. FIRST FRIDAY FIRST SATURDAY VIGIL Mar. 1 & 2 at Our Lady of Grace beginning with the First Friday Mass at 6:30 PM on Mar. 1 and ending with the First Saturday Mass at 8 AM on Feb. 2.
