These students will be representing their classes this year in a variety of leadership activities throughout the school year. History of St. Michael s Prayer...Recently, I had a parent question why we are saying the St. Michael s prayer at the beginning of each school day. This prompted me to share with you the history behind the prayer to St. Michael. My source is St.Michaeljournal.org Exactly 33 years to the day prior to the great Miracle of the Sun in Fatima, that is, on October 13, 1884, Pope Leo XIII had a remarkable vision. When the aged Pontiff had finished celebrating Mass in his private Vatican Chapel, attended by a few Cardinals and members of the Vatican staff, he suddenly stopped at the foot of the altar. He stood there for about 10 minutes, as if in a trance, his face ashen white. Then, going immediately from the Chapel to his office, he composed the prayer to St. Michael. "Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into Hell, Satan and all the other evil spirits, who prowl throughout the world, seeking the ruin of souls. Amen." When asked what had happened, he explained that, as he was about to leave the foot of the altar, he suddenly heard voices - two voices, one kind and gentle, the other guttural and harsh. They seemed to come from near the tabernacle. As he listened, he heard the following conversation: The guttural voice, the voice of Satan in his pride, boasted to Our Lord: "I can destroy your Church." The gentle voice of Our Lord: "You can? Then go ahead and do so." Satan: "To do so, I need more time and more power." Our Lord: "How much time? How much power? Satan: "75 to 100 years, and a greater power over those who will give themselves over to my service." Our Lord: "You have the time, you will have the power. Do with them what you will." As a result, In 1886, Pope Leo XIII decreed that this prayer to St. Michael be said at the end of "low" Mass. In 1970 this practice changed due to a change to the Rite of the Mass. However, at the end of his Angelus message given in St. Peter s Square, Sunday, April 24, 1994, Pope John Paul II urged Catholics to recite this prayer to Saint Michael once again. He asked us to pray the St. Michael s to obtain help in the battle against the forces of darkness and the spirit of this world." The local, national and international news is filled with the strife we have in the world today. Therefore, each day we at ICS are going ask St. Michael to protect us from the temptations of the devil as we go about our day doing God s will.

2 This and That Altar Server Training We will be training Altar Servers in grades 4-8 on September 16, September 16, 2015 is Early Release Wednesday and the training session will begin at 2:15 p.m. 4:00 in the new sanctuary. Mrs. Angelillo will be conducting the session. Parents are welcome to stay and sit in the back of the church and listen so you can give your child feedback and support when they serve. Monday Assembly...Each Monday we hold an assembly in the Gymnasium. We pray, say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, sing Happy Birthday to those students and staff celebrating a birthday during the week, recognize group and individual accomplishments and make announcements. Parents please feel free to attend, we would love to have you join us. Teacher Conferences...Parents if you feel the need for a conference with a teacher our policy is to make an appointment with your child s teacher. Please do not just drop by at your convenience. Our teacher s work day begins at 7:30 a.m. To effectively manage their day as a classroom teacher, each one needs the time between 7:30 7:45 to organize. At 7:45, they are expected to greet your child as they enter the classroom. Please do not expect them to stop what they are doing to address your concern. If you want to discuss a specific matter, make an appointment by or phone call. ( is first name.last name@incarnation.cdom.org) If you have made an appointment during the school day, it is critical that you sign-in in the office and pick-up a visitors pass. Walking your child to their classroom...parents of students in grades 1-8 by today, September 1, 2015, there should be little or no need for you to escort your child to class. As part of their personal development, they need to take responsibility for arriving on time with everything they need to participate fully throughout the day. If your child has a project that requires extra help, then escorting them might be necessary. If you have any questions, please contact the school office. Reminder...Students and Parents the signed form found in the back of the Student and Parent Handbook was due August 26, It can be found on our webpage under New Family Resources. The purpose of this Handbook is to provide rules, policies, procedures, guidelines and other information that parents and students may need or for which they are responsible as participants in the Catholic Diocese of Memphis schools. Signing In and Out...Parents if you plan enter the building between 7:45 and dismissal, for safety reasons, please make sure you get a visitors pass in the office. Headmaster Online.Parents, teachers post grades in HeadMaster on a regular basis. If you want to learn how your child is doing in a specific class, sign on to HeadMaster Online. Also, while on HeadMaster if you have any changes to telephone, address, home address etc. please update this information. Service...Several of our middle school students volunteered to help out with the Parish Rummage Sale held in the gym last weekend. Over $7,000 was raised to reduce the parish and school debt.

4 Home and School NEW FLOOR CLEANER PURCHASE- A huge THANK YOU to all of our Home and School members for this summer s purchase of a new floor cleaner for our school gymnasium! Above is our beloved Mr. Bobo pictured with the new machine that will help keep our gym and school floors sparkling for a long time! It has been happily nicknamed the "ICS Zamboni by all who have seen it in action! BOO BASH is October 24, 2015!!!! Boo Bash is right around the corner and Home & School needs your help to make this year the most successful yet! Thank you to everybody who came to the Boo Bash Planning meeting Monday morning! We would like to fill all open chair positions by Friday, September 4th. These are a few of the open positions we still we need to be filled: Rentals Chair: Volunteer will be the contact person for any rentals that may be needed for Boo Bash and will oversee their set up and take down Maze Chair: Volunteer will set up and take down the maze. This a great opportunity for a dad that would like to get involved! FALL FLOWER SALE - We will once again be partnering with MorGreen Nursery and Landscape for our Fall Flower Sale. This is part of our "Do What You Do" fundraising efforts, which simply means, ICS raises money by our parents participating...just by doing what you do...so if you plant fall flowers, please consider ordering during this sale and ICS will profit! MorGreen Nursery and Landscape has been a big supporter of ICS in the past and continues to do so by donating the profit of the flower sale back to ICS. Order forms will be going home soon after Labor Day. NEW FAMILY BREAKFAST- New Families please plan to attend our New Family Breakfast on Friday, September 11th in the Fellowship Hall. While your children are in class we welcome parents and any siblings at home to join us that morning right after drop-off! Please come and have breakfast with us, meet other new families, and ask questions you might have about our school. If you have any questions please contact Lynn Bray at or lynnbray@me.com 1st HOME AND SCHOOL GENERAL MEETING- Please SAVE THE DATE for the 1st of our 4 General Meetings, scheduled for Friday, September 18th after morning drop-off in the Library. We will serve coffee and doughnuts. Our meetings are a great forum to learn and ask questions about H&S events and fundraisers. We value all of our parent's input. The agenda will include, among other things: A principal update, Boo Bash plans, and a review of H&S Budget. We would love to see the largest turnout ever! Thank you!
