2 Dear Friends, PASTOR S PAGE I am very happy to announce that our Family Festival was an overwhelmingly success for the 3 rd consecutive year. Although the numbers are not final because we are still waiting for some bills and more donations that were promised us, we are estimating that we made a profit of over $40,000. I say this was successful for two reasons: 1) the money is always helpful 2) the excitement, energy and joy experienced by all attendees was immeasurable. It reached its high point on Saturday night when I looked around and saw a sea of people. Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time and there were no problems. Because of this, I first thank all parishioners who supported our efforts. Just by showing up you made a difference! Secondly, I owe a great deal of gratitude to our Festival Core Committee. Honestly, without them we would not have a festival. Our Chairman is Kevin Fitzpatrick. Kevin is the leader of our committee, is very well organized and he knows how to get things done. Kevin s daughter Felicity is 2 years old. Kevin is allowed to retire as chairman when Felicity is old enough to take over. This being said, every member of our committee has a very important role and the festival would not happen without them. They are: Joe Walsh, Bill O Neill, May O Boyle Deegan, Maria Caridi, Mary Lennon, Joe McCartan, Gerry Frudden, Jimmy Bush, Tommy Kane, Chrissy and Matt Kiernan, Howie Ammerman, Deacon Doug Ferreiro and Deacon Lachlan Cameron. We also have an extended core group: Reid Sakowich, Tony Lennon, Tom Smith, Jack Conway, Marc Farina, Tommy Deegan, Victor Cunneen, Maureen and Tony Jackson. The many red shirt volunteers are the glue that keeps everything together. They are parishioners who so generously give of their time and make a huge difference. I do not know the exact number but it is well over 100. A thank you is also in order to the Holy Spirit Players led by Marilyn McLean and Mimi Jay. Their Thursday night Cabaret was enjoyed by many and I heard all night long how talented they are. Eamonn Lennon and Ray McKnight were the volunteer DJ s for the weekend. They selflessly gave of their time and were also very much appreciated. In addition to singing at the Cabaret, Katie Milinic, with the help of her sister Stephanie, worked the face painting table. They were great and drew large crowds! Although it s not for me, the kids really enjoyed having their faces painted. Although Isabelle is a paid employee, she worked for 12 hours per day Thursday Sunday. She never complains and she always keeps everything looking and smelling clean and fresh. Thank you Isabelle! We also have a behind the scenes group of volunteers who you don t see but they play a key role. The emergency crew working at the rectory front office: Kathleen O Neill, Dolores Cameron, Pat Frudden, Jeanne Walsh, and Eileen Smith. They are responsible for any type of emergency, as well as our lost and found. Our group of counters are responsible for constant money counts during the course of the festival. This group consists of: Joanne McCartan, Lillian Romano, Maureen Wagner, Loretta Kusk and Dolores Santangelo. Deacon Lachlan also assists them throughout the course of the weekend. We also have security throughout the building and this includes: Ed Smith, Frank Smith, and Jim Corrigan. Additionally we have off duty police walking the grounds during all festival hours. Finally, the Boy Scouts helped with clean up on Sunday night when the festival ended. To say they were helpful is an understatement. Thank you Scouts! So, if you were here for a short period of time or throughout the entire 4 day festival, you can see that this was much more than a fundraiser; it was an event! It was fun. It was safe. It was well organized. Everyone mentioned above and anyone who spent even a short period of time here had experienced the excitement, the fun and the fellowship. This truly was a wonderful experience for all involved. Thank you all! May God continue to bless our parish, Fr. Grieco -2-

4 DEACON LACHLAN Over the last few weeks I highlighted two churches in Manhattan one Irish and one Italian and of course I opened up a can of worms. What about Brooklyn the borough of churches.. And of course questions were raised about Queen s churches. The Diocese of Brooklyn consists of both boroughs.. and everyone is attached rightly so to the parish they grew up in, or where were married or confirmed. So please bear with me as I try to work through some parishes and parish histories from both Brooklyn and Queens. This week we look at the Cathedral of St. James, now called the Cathedral-Basilica of St. James. Founded in1822, St. James was the first Catholic Church on Long Island and thus the cradle of Catholic Christianity for two dioceses (Brooklyn and Rockville Centre) and 388 parishes. By the early 1800 s, immigrants were coming to Long Island in larger numbers. Many of them were Irish and Catholic. Before the Navy Yard was founded, Brooklyn s Catholic population was small. When the Navy Yard opened in 1801 a large number of Irish Catholics moved to Brooklyn to work there. One of them was Peter Turner ( ), who emigrated from County Wexford in Ireland in his teens and settled on Fulton Street. An Irish neighborhood known as Vinegar Hill, named for a battle fought during the Irish Rebellion of 1798, soon formed near the Navy Yard. For Mass, Brooklyn Catholics had to take the Fulton Street Ferry to Manhattan, where they attended St. Peter s on Barclay Street. Tradition has it that Brooklyn s first Mass took place in 1820 at William Purcell s home on the corner of York and Gold Streets. Father Philip Laricy, an Irish-born Augustinian priest, celebrated it. As Catholic numbers increased, Brooklyn Catholics started to talk seriously about getting their own church. On January 1, 1822, Peter Turner sent out a petition to his fellow Brooklyn Catholics. On January 7, 1822, he issued a circular, calling for a meeting of all Brooklyn Catholics. At the meeting, he was elected president of the newly-formed Roman Catholic Society of Brooklyn. Under Turner s leadership, the Society bought land for St. James, Long Island s first Catholic Church (now St. James Cathedral Basilica). St. James School and a parish cemetery followed in One of turner s friends, Daniel Dempsey s house on Fulton Street served Catholics as a place for business meetings as well as Mass, which was celebrated by priests traveling from Manhattan. Mass was advertised in the Long Island Star, a local newspaper. On April 25, 1822, Bishop John Connolly, OP, the second bishop of New York, blessed the ground along Chapel and Jay Streets, where the new church would be built. In 1830, Turner was elected the first President of the Roman Catholic Orphan Society of Brooklyn, an organization founded to care for orphans and needy children. He helped bring the Sisters of Charity to Brooklyn in Turner was a leading figure in the formation of the Emerald Association, whose annual ball has raised money for Catholic childcare on Long Island. In 1845, he was elected President of the Brooklyn Benevolent Society, another organization founded to provide for Brooklyn s orphans. Active in civic affairs, Turner served as health warden for the City of Brooklyn, and was a member of the city s Poor Relief Committee. Turner died at his home on Front Street on December 31, 1862, but the Turner family continued his legacy of service to the Catholic Church on Long Island. His son, John was among the first priests ordained for the Brooklyn Diocese. In 1857, he became Rector of St. James Cathedral, the church his father had helped build. He later became Vicar-General of the Diocese. (Thanks to Diocese of Brooklyn Archives) More on St. James Cathedral next week. As a point of interest, Mgr. John Strynkowski who celebrates the 8:30 mass here every Wednesday, was the rector of St James Cathedral Basilica until his retirement. A small world indeed!
