2 PASTOR S PAGE Dear Friends, Next Sunday, October 2nd, Maureen Russell will be speaking about prolife issues at the 9:30 A.M. family Mass and the 11:00 A.M. Mass. Maureen was once the director of the respect life office for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Maureen is a very good speaker but, more importantly, she is very proud of her Catholic faith and passionate about respecting the value of all life, from the moment of conception through natural death. Maureen is happily married and has four sons. It would be wonderful if you would support her efforts by attending one of these two Masses. Our parish Pro-Life/Respect Life committee consists of five parishioners: Pat Johnson, Maureen McCabe, Grace Morris, Josephine Gormley and Marion Walsh. These fine ladies coordinate events throughout the year which support young women who have given birth, but may need some assistance. One of the more popular fundraisers is the baby bottle campaign. This is a wonderful way for all family members to participate in helping those in need. It may seem like fun, which is fine, but it helps many young families. Within the next couple of weeks, they will begin a weekly blurb in the bulletin to keep us informed of the many ways to help or get involved. I also want to take this opportunity to thank our family Mass committee. This, in many ways, is also a pro-life committee, because these very caring young Moms give a lot of time and energy to the young people of our parish. Caring for God s children, teenagers and young people is pro-life too. Thank you to Marie Scandura, Erica Marquardt, Maria Brooker, Fran Wisnewski, Fred Grimshaw and Ann Burger. Pam Milinic and Mary Lennon were also once on the committee, and they were a lot of help. Thank you all!! The parish pastoral council has helped me plan and organize our parish appreciation party. Much work has gone into this for several months. A special thank you to May Deegan and Anna Rosamilla for taking the lead role. And a welcome back to all of our religious education students. We look forward to seeing you in class and at Mass. It will be a great year! Peace and God Bless, Fr. Grieco -2-

3 DEACON LACHLAN I read recently of the last days of an ordinary but determined Christian woman from Scotland who defended more than 300 young lives, most of them Jewish, during the Second World War in Hungary. Her name was Jane Haining and she has been declared righteous among the nations, a designation used by Israel s Holocaust memorial, Yad Vashem, to honor Gentiles who risked their lives to save Jews from the Nazis. But the recent discovery of Haining s handwritten will, along with previously unpublished photographs and documents, is helping to shed new light on her extraordinary heroism. Haining was vacationing in Cornwall, England, in September 1939, when news came that Germany had invaded Poland. Jane immediately returned to her post as a matron in the girls home of the Scottish Missionary School in Budapest The invasion of Poland was the beginning of World War II and would lead to countless horrors, including the creation of concentration camps, in one of which, Haining would die less than five years later. Born in 1897, she grew up on a farm and after finishing her education, she spent 10 years working as a secretary in a thread company. In the early 1930s, she moved to Budapest, and took charge of several hundred students at the missionary school. Most of these children were Jewish. Church authorities ordered Haining home several times after war broke out, but she repeatedly refused, saying I shall continue to do my duty and stick to my post. In March 1944, Nazi troops entered Budapest. Haining stood her ground, even as she was forced to sew yellow Stars of David on the Jewish girls clothes on the orders of the Gestapo. Even while under surveillance, she went to the market at 5 a.m. each day to get food for the girls in her care; she also cut up her leather luggage to make soles for their shoes. But after she caught the cook s son-inlaw raiding the scarce food supply she put aside for her charges, he betrayed her to the Nazis. She was arrested on suspicion of espionage..and charged with eight offenses, including working among the Jews..listening to news broadcasts on the BBC.visiting prisoners of war working in politics. and..weeping when seeing the girls attend class wearing yellow stars. She admitted all of the charges, except the ones involving political activity, She was sent to do forced labor at Auschwitz concentrationcamp in May She died there in July of that year. As much as this is certainly a sad story, it is also an inspiring one. When we look back at events like this, we tend to view the participants as some kind of superman or woman, especially when we consider some of our canonized saints. Mother Teresa, recently canonized, is probably the most obvious example. We see men and women who have done things that we feel, we could never possibly do. However when we read of a woman like Jane Haining, (not a canonized saint) we find a very humble woman certainly a woman who never considered herself to be a hero..a very ordinary woman who did what had to be done to care for those in need. She displays a selflessness that is amazing to those of us, who when faced with a difficult decision invariably take the selfish route. Reading her story, Jane Haining has taken the Beatitudes to heart.she has taken the words of that great Sermon on the Mount and put them into action. I suppose that in the modern idiom we might say that she not only talks the talk.but she walks the walk. May almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -3-

7 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Dear Fellow Parishioners, As you can see from the the Family Mass photos, our 2016/17 religious education program has begun. Father Grieco and all of us involved in the program are excited about working with the students of our parish as they learn about our faith and Catholic religion. As I mentioned at the 9:30 Mass last week, when we worship and learn together, we build the Christian community and provide support for each other founded in the message of Jesus. As the year progresses, we will continue to provide updates for the parish in the bulletin. As always, thank you for your prayers and support. God s Peace! John Hogan ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY The Rosary Altar Society is sponsoring a Christmas Fair, Saturday, November 12th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, November 13th from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vendors fee is $75. for two days If interested, please call Eileen Smith at (516) ADOPT-A-BABY PROGRAM Once again, Holy Spirit Pro-Life Committee is happy to announce the Spiritual Adopta-Baby Prayer Program. To help celebrate Respect Life Month the program will begin the first weekend of October. The purpose is to have the parish community pray for unborn babies in danger of abortion and educate parishioners about the development of the unborn child over the nine-month period before birth. The members of our parish family will have the opportunity to spiritually adopt a child who is newly conceived. In filling out the prayer card, a commitment is made to pray for this child. In addition, everyone is invited to name the child for whom they will be praying. This helps to give the baby the humanity he or she deserves. The sign-up cards will be available at each of the church entrances. -7-
