2 Dear friends, As I m sure you know, this Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. This is a period of time when we share in the suffering of Christ. Jesus was in the desert for 40 days and nights being tempted by the devil. During this time, he survived on bread and water only. Although Jesus was fully divine, he was also fully human. This means he went through the same suffering and agony we would go through had we been in the desert with him. Because of this, the Church has this wonderful tradition of Lent and encourages us to share in the suffering of Christ. This is why it is recommended that we put our best foot forward and give up something for Lent. And although this is not required by the Church, it can help us identify, at least a little, in Christ s suffering. If you have sincerely tried this before, I m sure you agree with me, if you haven t, you may want to consider it. Abstinence and Fasting All Catholics who have reached their fourteenth year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. All Catholics between the ages of eighteen and fifty-nine inclusive are also bound to observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day. Those whose work or health would be impaired are excused from fast and abstinence. Individual conscience should decide proper cause for excuse. A more serious reason is required to excuse oneself from Ash Wednesday and Good Friday fast and abstinence. Guidelines for Ash Wednesday The Ashes must be blessed by a priest or deacon. When necessary, they may be imposed by a deacon, an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, or other suitable persons, either assisting the priest or in his absence, e.g. at a nursing home. -2-

3 If the Ashes are to be imposed outside of Mass, this is to take place within the context of a Service of the Word, as prescribed in the rubrics of the Roman Missal. A short homily is always indicated so that the use of ashes can be rightly understood, and a Christian spirit of repentance fostered. The Roman Missal and the Book of Blessings provides a full order for the blessing and distribution of ashes. Ashes may be distributed only on the day of Ash Wednesday itself, not the evening before. There is no liturgical anticipation of Ash Wednesday (vespers or vigil). Holy Water During Lent Holy Water fonts are to remain in place throughout the season of Lent. They are emptied at the start of the Triduum on Holy Thursday and are replenished during the Easter Vigil. Liturgical Music The Gloria and Alleluia are not recited or sung during the season of Lent, with the exception of the Solemnity of St. Joseph (March 19), when the Gloria is mandated. The ordo also calls for a lessening of the pomp with musical instruments, with the emphasis on simplicity and absence, as with the decorations of the church and the overall sense of fasting during Lent. They are to be used only to give necessary support to singing (Sing to the Lord, #114). The purpose of Lent The purpose of Lent is to draw us closer to Jesus Christ by identifying with his suffering. Lent should be different and our lives should be different during Lent. Fridays should clearly be a day of fast. If we make a commitment to God during this time but do not change our way, we are missing the point. Much of what we do is based on Common Sense. But we are encouraged during this time to live the spirit of Lent. To turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel! Fr. Grieco -3-

4 DEACON LACHLAN I am writing this from Rome The Eternal City.. I am fortunate to be spending a week in this beautiful city, while my son Fr. Lachlan.finishes up some of his studies here. I arrived today, and after settling in to the apartment I rented, took a walk around the neighborhood. I decided to stop in at Santa Maria in Valicella also known as the Chiesa Nuovo.the New Church where St. Philip Neri s tomb is located. (The New Church is about 400 years old). I had visited this church a number of years ago. and on that visit.got into trouble with the sacristan for taking a picture of the tomb of the great saint. I ll never know what exactly he was saying to me..but I got the message. no picture taking allowed. This time I didn t take any pictures.but my phone rang while I was there. not during Mass but it was still very embarrassing. Last week I mentioned that I am looking for stories and pictures of interest to put in the bulletin as the parish begins the celebration of our 125th anniversary. It just so happens that I have an item of interest that I would like to share with you today, and although I ve known the story for many years.it is only by chance that it came to mind today. Many of you will remember Fr. John Daley who served at Holy Spirit during the early 90 s and up till about For those who don t remember him, Fr. Daley was a retired priest from England who, after retiring came to serve at Holy Spirit. Today when I arrived at my apartment and opened up the doors to the little terrace, I found myself overlooking the courtyard of the Venerable English College. This is the seminary in Rome where seminarians from England have studied for more than 600 years. It is the English equivalent of the North American College where American seminarians study. The reason I mention the English college and the coincidence that this week it is my neighbor.is because Fr. Daley began his priestly formation there in In June of 1940 Italy entered the war as part of the Axis. The English seminarians who were still in Rome at that point. Including a young John Daley...had to be evacuated to Britain. The original plan was to sail back to England from Genoa.and indeed the college community took a train from Rome to Genoa to catch a steamship. Mussolini may have got the trains to run on time.but not this one. because John Daley (remember he was not a priest yet) and his friends arrived in Genoa too late to board the ship. They had to return to Rome and make other arrangements. Along with so many others at that time. the community from the English College decided to try to reach the port of Le Havre in Normandy...before German forces arrived there and captured the city and the port. When Fr. Daley recounted this story to me many years ago, and his subsequent efforts to reach England it reminded me of the movie, Trains, Planes and Automobiles because although he didn t take a plane...fr. Daley took almost every other form of transport to get home.including a motor cycle. For those who remember him..fr. Daley was the last person you would expect to find on a motorcycle! Happily John Daley and friends reached Le Havre and sailed for England just before the Germans arrived. He continued his priestly formation in England and was ordained in Most of us are familiar with the movie Lord of the Rings..a few may even have read the book. JRR Tolkien was the author of Lord of the Rings..and Tolkien s son, Fr. John Tolkien was a classmate of Fr. Daley. When Fr. Daley recounted for me his connection to Tolkien he was quite excited and this was long before Tolkien s work had made it to the big screen. For those who remember him it s hard to imagine Fr. Daley getting excited about anything. He was a holy man, quite brilliant, and was a great addition to the parish family here at Holy Spirit. May he rest in peace. May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -4-
