2 PASTOR S PAGE Dear Friends, Since my weekly column took some time off, there is a lot to catch up on. Some things I will write about in the next few weeks are: changes in the rectory, a NYC trip we took with the teens who help at the family Mass, a completed parish Eagle Scout project, our attempts to keep the parking lots for parishioners only; and other parish related issues. However for this week, I will write about the priests who have been helping at Holy Spirit parish, the priests who will be helping this year and the future plans for priest coverage. As we all know, Fr. Irinel Racos will not be back to help us. He is now the pastor of Saint Elizabeth parish in Melville. He is an outstanding priest and friend and we were lucky to have him. He tells everyone how happy he was to be here. For a two week period we had Fr. Paul, a very good friend of Fr. Irinel. Fr. Paul loved his time here and we hope to have him back next summer. He will also give our Lenten retreat and I will have the dates as early as next week. Although most of you never met him, Fr. David Regan was helping me on Saturday mornings for several months. He was appointed pastor in St Gertrude parish in Bayville. Monsignor Dreasen was here for the month of July and he hopes to be back next August. Monsignor John Strynkowski, my seminary rector, has been celebrating Mass here most Wednesday mornings. He is planning on staying, at least for the time being. To take the place of Fr. Irinel, I have three priests who will help until June. Monsignor Cantley is a retired priest and he will be celebrating one Mass every Sunday. Fr. Nick Zientarski teaches at St. Joseph s major seminary in Yonkers. He will also celebrate one Mass every Sunday. Fr. Joe Fitzgerald is the vocation director for the diocese of Rockville Centre. Fr. Joe will be helping on occasion but you will not be seeing him as consistently. This brings me to my next point. Every parish is finding it more challenging to find priests to help. Although we have been very lucky and blessed so far, this can change at any time. It is possible for one of our priests to get sick, be appointed a pastor or reassigned. There are no guarantees. There may be a point in time when we would have no choice but to downsize our Sunday schedule from four Masses to three Masses. I do not see this happening this year, but it does remain a possibility. At Fr. Irinel s parish, because of the priest shortage, if there is a funeral, the daily Mass is also the funeral Mass. Again, I have no plans of doing this now, but it does remain a possibility. For a parish to succeed and thrive, it needs to be a group effort. It requires the priests, deacons and all the parishioners working together, for the greater glory of God. That should always be our goal. For that reason I want to keep everyone informed on how we are doing as a parish, both in spiritual matters and in the temporal or business side of running a parish. To that end, in the near future I will be giving an update on our parish financial position. As always, be assured that all my efforts are focused on what is best for Holy Spirit parish. I ask for your continued support as we work together to continue to strengthen the parish, so that Holy Spirit parish will be around for many years to come. Thank you and be assured of my prayer s. 3 DEACON LACHLAN In a few weeks Friday, September 30th to be exact, we will have a Mass and Appreciation Party for all our parish volunteers. The Mass will be at 6:30pm in the church, and the party will be in the auditorium immediately following the Mass. We have had a notice in the bulletin for a number of weeks asking all volunteers to save the date, and asking also for the names of those who intend to come, so that we can begin planning the food and beverages for the event. Many have already responded, but if you have not done so, now is the time. Thanks to May O Boyle Deegan and Anna Rosamilia from our Parish Council, many volunteers will have received an invitation, or a regular mail invitation in the past few days. Please let them know if you intend to come to the party. Spouses of our volunteers are also welcome to attend. This party is for 21 and over. There is a separate event for our younger volunteers. So if you are an usher or a lector or an EM, or perhaps Ministry of Consolation is your area, please come along and let us know you are coming! We also have many volunteers in Social Ministry, festival volunteers, hospitality and our Saint Vincent de Paul group just to name a few. If we have missed someone let us know. We are blessed with many volunteers at Holy Spirit..so many in fact that when arranging something like this.it is possible to miss someone! We don t want anyone to miss out. If you are a member of Holy Spirit Parish and you volunteer please let us know. This will be a wonderful evening which will begin with a beautiful Mass in the church. When we go down to the auditorium there will be a full dinner, and we will have wine, beer and soda, tea and coffee and dessert. Then we will have music and dancing. the music being provided by our very own Ray McKnight.who will play a variety of music for all tastes..keeping in mind that it s a 21 and over group!! The Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be radio personality and Holy Spirit parishioner. Tony Jackson. We all lead busy lives, trying to juggle the demands placed on us each day, and yet so many people take the time to volunteer to help in so many different ways. This is an opportunity for us to come before God in the Sacrifice of the Mass, in gratitude for the many gifts that we receive each day. One of those gifts is the gift of one another. This party is an opportunity for our volunteers to come together, and meet one another, and share our joys as followers of Jesus Christ. May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -3-

6 HOLY SPIRIT YOUTH CHOIR Boys and Girls: 8 years old through high school; Raise your voices in song, and sing for the Lord. Join the Holy Spirit Youth Choir! The Youth Choir sings on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month at the 9:30 a.m. Family Mass. The first rehearsal is Friday, September 16, 2016 At 4:00 p.m. in the downstairs Music Room. I look forward to seeing you, M. McClean ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY The Rosary Altar Society will meet on Monday, September 12, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. in the Church to pray the Rosary. Following the Rosary, there will be a general meeting in Martin Hall under the leadership of our new co-presidents, Dolores Cameron and Eileen Smith. There will be a wine and cheese social after the meeting, providing the opportunity for everyone to meet and make new friends. Please consider joining us and becoming active in the Rosary Altar Society of the Church of the Holy Spirit. The Rosary Altar Society is sponsoring a Christmas Fair, Saturday, November 12th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, November 13th from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vendors fee is $75. for two days. This would require serving two to three days a month. Virtus Training is required for both positions. Eucharistic Ministers are required to attend additional training. Lectors do not require any other training and will be given a briefing on what to do and provided a website where the readings can be reviewed beforehand. 7 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Registration for the 2016/17 Religious Education school year has begun and will continue into September along the following schedule: Tuesdays from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you haven t already done so, and your child is in first through eighth grade in our local public schools, please come in to register. Opening Mass of the Religious Education year will take place next Sunday September 18th, at 9:30 a.m. There will be an informal reception to follow where parents/guardians and students may meet the teachers. We currently have 229 subscribers. 143 of these subscriptions will run through August and will be up for renewal in September. We also have 38 subscribers who will run through September and will be up for renewal in October. Therefore, we hope you will consider renewing your subscription now or at the beginning a new one at this time. A one year subscription to the Club is $100. This will entitle you to 12 monthly drawings. This past year our monthly prize has ranged between $765 and $955. Of course, this has also been a great fundraiser for our parish which receives half of the total that is taken in. In order to renew your subscription all that is needed is to fill out a form or simply put your name, address, phone and on a piece of paper and enclose in an envelope with your $100 check. The envelope may be place in the Sunday Collection if it is clearly marked for Club or dropped at the rectory during regular business hours Forms are available in the Rectory Office.
