4 Deacon Lachlan By the time you read this Thanksgiving is behind us and we are already into what has come to be known as the Christmas season at least as far as the retail world is concerned. We as Christians know that before we get to Christmas we must first celebrate the season of Advent. We know that the real Christmas Season begins surprise, surprise.with the birth of Jesus. However.just to go back to Thanksgiving for a moment. The actual designated day for us to give thanks has come and gone..but as faithful followers of Jesus Christ we should give thanks every day for all we have been given.even though there are days when we may not feel particularly grateful. The great English writer and Christian apologist, G.K. Chesterton..although he didn t celebrate our Thanksgiving Day.it s not a holiday in England.Chesterton always spoke of the importance of gratitude. In his autobiography he said The chief idea of my life is taking things with gratitude. For us, Thanksgiving is an opportunity to shake off the doldrums of life-as-usual and wake up to how blessed we are. Even if it s been a tough year, the fact we all survived and are here is a victory. Chesterton s idea is that, if we cultivate gratitude, our eyes will be opened to the wonder we have been passing by unawares. Most of us I hope.say grace before meals..if you don t.start now. Chesterton, however, took it a step further. He did of course say grace before meals..but he also said a grace before a concert, before a walk, before a swim before he would begin to write. He saw everything he did throughout the day as an opportunity to thank God for the gift of what he was about to do no matter how commonplace it may have seemed. That is a real lesson for most of us we may be thankful for the weather the walk we took.the movie we are about to watch.simple everyday things but how often do we stop to say a prayer of thanks before we begin? Most people who write their autobiography try to find a catchy title for their book..something that will attract attention and of course sales. The autobiography of G. K. Chesterton is called. The Autobiography of G. K. Chesterton.which says much about the man himself he always had a quirky sense of humor. While God was always at the forefront of all that he did.when it came to other things he could be very forgetful. His wife Frances..a writer herself.worked diligently to keep him on some kind of schedule, because he was always busy.but had no sense of time when giving lectures or travelling to his speaking engagements. One day he sent her a telegram from the railroad station in Leeds (a city in the north of England). The telegram read I am in Leeds. Where should I be? I suppose if he were alive today he would just send her a text! So a little bit of Chesterton trivia there.but more importantly some Chesterton wisdom on the importance of gratitude.for everything. The designated day of Thanksgiving is behind us.but we know that we have so much to be grateful for every day of the year. Next week we will begin the season of Advent another opportunity for us to give thanks and to prepare for the coming of the greatest gift of all. How very blessed we are! May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -4-

6 Sunday Scripture Reflection Readings for the Week of November 25, 2018 Last Sunday s readings reminded us to be vigilant at all times because the second coming of Jesus and the final judgment is at hand, and we must be worthy to stand before the Son of Man. Since St. Paul reminds us in the Epistle to the Romans that we have all sinned, the end of the liturgical year it is a good time to look at the ways in which we have fallen short of the glory of God and to ask forgiveness, an uncomfortable thing for most of us. The first and second readings are bold and victorious. We see Christ coming on the clouds for the final judgment of heaven and earth. The Gospel sets a very different tone. Jesus is under arrest and facing death before Pontius Pilate. We know how this story will end. So if Christ is King, what does it mean? Is he a glorious conqueror or a suffering servant? My kingdom does not belong to this world. Here is the heart of Jesus reign. He is a king and his subjects are alive and well on earth but, ultimately, Jesus kingdom transcends our earthly concepts of power. Jesus faced down the temptation of a solely earthly kingship. At the close of his 40 days in the desert, the devil offered him the kingdoms of the world. Jesus only had to sacrifice his heavenly values and worship Satan. The same temptations to distort the kingship of Christ are present to us today. Jesus invitation also endures. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. It is important for us to belong to the full truth of Christ s kingdom. First, our own hearts must be transformed. Our own rebellions in favor of selfishness and against holiness must be conquered by God s grace. Second, we must work to transform the world as best we can in our own corner of it. Like Jesus shows us by his life and death, this doesn t mean domination. It means service, sacrifice, respect, and love. Our lives must testify to the truth of Jesus Christ, who lays down his life for his people. That is the true beauty of Christ the King! -6-

The collection which will be taken up at the Thanksgiving mass will be used by Parish Social Ministry and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to help our neighbors in need. On Sunday, December 2, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be collecting clothing which will then be available in their store in Garden City Park. A collection truck will be in our parking lot on Jericho Turnpike after all masses. As the weather turns colder, the need for warm clothing is increasing. Please check your closets for any usable clothing which could help those in need. Please know that your generosity at this time is a way of living the words of Jesus. 9 Pastor s Pen CHRIST THE KING Dear Friends, This weekend we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. It is difficult for us to understand our faith or fully appreciate the liturgy unless we know who Jesus is. Jesus Christ is a living, divine person who, as the Scriptures testify, accepted a human nature and lived a real human life. This extraordinary revelation offers humanity new hope, for God in Christ shows us through his willingness to accept a human nature just how much he loves us. Christ the Lord in his revelation defines who he is. His truth is not simply a matter of an abstraction of the mind or feeling in our hearts. Instead, Christ is boldly himself, for he is God, but he is God who makes himself known to us and therefore gives us categories through which we can come to an understanding of who he is and what he wants. Jesus, the second person of the Holy Trinity, was sent down from heaven to show us the way to heaven. He WILLINGLY gave up his life for us to show us the way to heaven. Today we celebrate this great feast to acknowledge that Jesus truly is God. To appreciate our faith. To live with joy. To pray with hope. To be thankful to God. Next week we celebrate the first week of the season of Advent, as we wait, in anticipation, to the birth of Jesus. May God continue to bless us, Fr. Grieco Gianna Ramos wishing Fr. During the season of Advent the Social Ministry Office sponsors a Giving Tree. The tree will be up in the Church on November24/25Thru December 8/9. You are invited to take one or more ornaments from one of the trees. The gifts need to be returned by the weekend of December 8/9, as we distribute the gifts to the families the week before Christmas. Please attach the labeled ornament to a new gift. Each ornament is marked with a number for a specific person of a family. PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE THE GIFT OR THE SIZE.
