2 Pastor s Page Dear Parishioners: Religious education began a few days ago and it s important for me to thank our teachers for the time they so generously give throughout the year (please see cover of bulletin). As I m sure you know, our teachers volunteer, they do not get paid. Through the grace of God, may we collectively do our best to teach our young people the importance of our Catholic faith and the love God has for all of us. I thank all of our young people who are students here for their involvement in the parish, especially with the Family Mass and as Altar Servers. For our students preparing to receive Confirmation on Tuesday, October 16 th we have 3 important dates: Pre-Confirmation Mass on Sunday, September 30 th at the 9:30 AM Family Mass. Confirmation rehearsal on Tuesday, October 9 7:15 PM and Confirmation on Tuesday, October 16 3:00 PM Adults (and family): 125 th anniversary dinner dance (Gala Dance) on Saturday, October 27 5:00 P.M. 6 Deacon Lachlan As we move into the last full week of September, we may well ask..where did September go?? I know it s a short month but only by one day! This month seems to have dissolved! I suppose it s because we are all so busy getting everyone set up for school and religious education and the many after school activities that our kids and grandkids are involved in. In September, everyone s life changes over from a take my time relaxing summer of unscheduled days and evenings.into a frenetic series of events, each one programmed to the nano second.so that we can pick up drop off.stop for a pizza pick up another kid/grandkid at the library.and then get home to find out that one of the kids/grandkids has another event after dinner. Does this sound familiar? Gala Dinner Dance Celebrating 125 years of Faith October is, hopefully, when things settle down a bit..or maybe they don t..maybe we have just become accustomed to the pace of post summer life. However, October is the month when we look to take a break from all the hustle and bustle of September, and what better way to have a relaxing evening than to come to the parish Gala Dinner and Dance on October 27 th. If you haven t already done so it s time to get signed up. The event is being held at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston. For those who are not familiar with the venue, it is only minutes from Holy Spirit. It is a house of formation for men who are preparing to enter the major seminary at Dunwoodie. It is also a well-designed campus, which houses among other things, a beautiful chapel where we will celebrate Mass at 5pm. Immediately after Mass we will walk across the lobby to the magnificent function suite for a cocktail hour, followed by dinner and dancing. This is a real function suite which is used for weddings and other celebrations. It is not the cafeteria that the students use. This is a custom designed suite with a fully stocked bar, banquet tables and dance floor, serving food that would equal anything you might find at some of the finer restaurants in the area. (It is also not the food the students eat.) The whole property is gated and there is ample parking available right next to the where the party will be held, so there are no worries about having to leave your car on the street. For those who are unable to drive, the parish will provide a bus which will leave from Holy Spirit, and return to Holy Spirit when the party is over. The bus is intended for those who don t have a car, or who are unable to drive at night. It is not for those who don t want to drive. The parish is happy to provide a bus for those who would otherwise be unable to attend. If you need the bus it will be here for you! If you don t need the bus..then you don t need the bus, and you will free up seats for those who do have a need. Many parishioners have already made up tables with friends. If you are putting a group together, get the names and payment and we will save a table for you.tables can be 10 or 12 even up to 16! However it s not necessary to put a table together this is a real parish family event, so you can come on your own or with a few friends we will seat you with other parishioners who have come on their own or perhaps with a small group. Everyone who attends will be made welcome and will know that they belong in our wonderful parish community. The cost for the evening is $80 per person, and you can sign up at the rectory. This is not a fundraiser for the parish, so we have kept the price as low as possible. Following a beautiful mass at 5pm in the chapel, there will be cocktails, an open bar, a five course dinner, and music, dancing and an opportunity to socialize with our parish family. It s going to be a wonderful evening, celebrating 125 years of the Catholic Church in New Hyde Park. May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -6-

September 23, th Sunday in Ordinary Time The Oscars. The Super Bowl. TV talent shows. Your son s Little League championship. We live in a culture set on competition. The desire to be the best goes beyond hobbies and into politics, the corporate world, and parenting comparisons at the park. This desire is as old as the human race, and it surely arose in Jesus day. While Biblical society was significantly less open and upwardly mobile than our own, power was attractive. From what we know, many of Jesus disciples had come from lowly backgrounds. Now they followed an increasingly popular rabbi who seemed primed to do something big. Jesus does His best to dissuade their high hopes by prophesying His own defeat. The Son of Man is to be handed over and they will kill Him. Internalizing the message proves challenging for the disciples, and their attention remains fixed on earthly glory. They [discuss] among themselves on the way who was the greatest. True to style, Jesus flips their pretensions on their heads. If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. We have heard these Biblical principles before. Do we believe them? In our professional lives, do we do whatever we can to get ahead, or are we concerned with the entire team succeeding? In the lives of our children, are we more concerned with victory or with building character? Jesus doesn t condemn success, but He reframes it. Whoever receives one child such as this in My name, receives Me. Today s Gospel is a reality check. In God s eyes, our success will not be measured by worldly output alone but by how much love and service we offer to others in the process.
