1 Church of the Holy Spirit 16 South 6th Street, New Hyde Park, New York (516) ~ Emergency (516) The Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time - October 23rd, 2016 Forty one of our Religious Education students received the Sacrament of Confirmation last Monday, here at Holy Spirit Parish.

2 FROM THE PASTOR Dear Friends, Last Monday, October 17th, Monsignor James McNamara Conferred the sacrament of Confirmation on 41 of our young men and women. By this gift of the Holy Spirit the faithful are more fully conformed to Christ and are strengthened with the power to bear witness to Christ for the building up of his Body in faith and charity. They are marked with the character or seal of the Lord in such a way that the Sacrament of Confirmation cannot be repeated. (The order of Confirmation, January 2016). As Monsignor mentioned in his homily, this is not a graduation but a new beginning. As Confirmed Catholics we, as were the first Apostles, are called to live the gospel by serving God and each other. It is the hope of the Church that the newly Confirmed will help build up Christ s Church on earth. Congratulations to the newly Confirmed! 3 DEACON LACHLAN While October is the month of the rosary, and by extension, a month when we recognize the Blessed Mother in a particular way, it is also Respect for Life Month. While every month is a right to life month, in October we highlight the injustices being carried out against children in their mother s womb, and the lack of respect, which is becoming ever more apparent, for those facing end of life issues. This month, the month of Mary, we sometimes forget that the Blessed Mother, more than anyone, experienced the difficulties and anxieties faced by families at both ends of the spectrum of life. As a young pregnant woman, she faced criticism and possible death because she was expecting a child and was unmarried. There was no concern among her contemporaries or the civil officials for her health, or the welfare of the child she carried. The Law had no regard for her child. So too when her son was crucified and died on the cross. He was falsely accused of breaking the Law. He was unjustly put to death.. and it was deemed acceptable because the Law said it was the right thing to do. Of course we need a system of law to maintain order in our communities, but just because something has been passed into law, it does not necessarily follow that it is morally acceptable. Very often we can become desensitized to the effects of unjust laws. If it doesn t affect us directly.we like to pretend that it s not there. We live in an age when the power of the media is unparalleled. We are bombarded with messages designed to sway us in favor of the interests of those who control these media outlets. It is of no consequence to them if the point they wish to make, or the idea that they are proposing, is something that is truthful or good or morally justifiable. They are happy to speak about freedom of choice and trumpet their platitudes about respecting the law of the land. The truth be told they have no regard for the law of the land or our system of courts. The only court they are interested in, is the court of public opinion and this they are interested in because it can be manipulated. Those who control the media are masters of propaganda. If they tell us something often enough unless we are very careful.we begin to believe it..and accept that it must be okay. We need only look to the work of oppressive regimes in other countries in the not too distant past..to realize that good people can be convinced that evil deeds are not in fact evil, and can be rationalized. Make no mistake. evil is what it is..it is the absence of God our Creator. We are where we are today.with regard to right to life issues, because evil.the absence of God..has taken hold in the lives of so many. God has been excluded because God is inconvenient. God has given us a free will, and one day will hold us accountable, for how we have used that free will. Rather than inform our conscience, and arrive at a decision that conforms to the will of God, many simply pretend that God does not exist, and as such can do as they please. They then draw comfort from fellow nonbelievers who are happy to tell them that it s our right to do as we please. We are being conditioned to believe that we are making choices freely. The only time.the only time that we make choices freely..is when God is part of our decision making process. If we make decisions based solely on what we see in the newspapers or other media outlets or what passes for social media we are fooling ourselves. If we make decisions that will take the life of an unborn child.or hasten the death of someone who is gravely ill.and do so, because the law of the land condones it..be assured.god was excluded from the decision making process. If we fail to protect life.from conception to natural death we are fostering what Saint John Paul called a Culture of Death.. we have abandoned the innate goodness that God created in us. While there are undoubtedly pressures placed on the individual who is faced with decisions which will end a life, most of those pressures come from a society that wants us to be rid of anyone who is an inconvenience..anyone who will be a burden. The language used is deliberately sensitive to make us feel that any decision to terminate a life is a responsible decision. They would have us believe that we will save the planet by aborting our children and euthanizing our parents and grandparents.. and in doing so will leave the world a better place for our children and grandchildren. Tragically, this perverse logic is accepted by many. We must always pray for the preservation of life. We must also stand firm.. hold to our beliefs.and don t be swayed by popular opinion. Just because opinion polls tell us that a majority of people are in favor of abortion... it does not follow that the majority are right. Rather.. it means that the majority are wrong.and in violation of the law of God! May almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -3-

6 Religious Persecution is happening right here and now. Ours is not an explicit persecution, but in Pope Francis s words, a polite persecution disguised as culture, modernity, and progress. Hear the message of hope from one who knows first-hand the evil of religious oppression and draw strength united by God s grace. Catholics for Freedom of Religion of Our Lady of Victory R.C. Church Floral Park, N.Y. Is Honored to Welcome Most Reverend Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski I want, like Joseph, not to be afraid and respond to the whispers of the Holy Spirit the same way Mary did, Fiat Voluntas Tua. 8 A Different Kind of Ministry by Florence Scarinci You might have seen me in church with a black Labrador Retriever wearing a yellow service dog vest and said to yourself, She doesn t appear to have a disability. Why does she need a service dog? The truth is, I don t. Someone else, someone I have yet to meet, does need that dog. Unless I raise this pup, that someone may never get a service dog, or may have a longer wait for a dog whom she hopes will provide her with a more independent life. I am a volunteer service dog puppy raiser. Let me tell you a little about what puppy raisers do and why we do it. Taylor, that beautiful, black Labrador you see snoozing while I read the Epistle, was bred by Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), a group, based in California, that provides service dogs, free of charge, to people with disabilities other than blindness. CCI has been breeding dogs for this purpose for over 40 years. Taylor s parents were carefully selected for their health, temperament, and trainability. At 8 weeks old she was flown to their training center in Medford where I picked her up. Her training began the very next day. By the time I return her to the Medford training center in February 2017, when she will be 20 months old, I will have taught her 30 commands, and provided her with all kinds of socializing experiences to make her comfortable and well behaved in public. She will have taken trips on the LIRR. She will have spent hours sleeping under my desk at work, a pew in church, or a table in a restaurant. She will have accompanied me to the mall, taken rides on elevators, and marched in the Fourth of July parade in Massapequa. I will have paid for her food, toys, leashes, collars, grooming, and ordinary veterinary care. For the next six to nine months following turn in, the professional trainers at CCI will hone her skills and teach her the new ones she will need to help her forever person: pressing the elevator call button, opening the refrigerator, turning lights on and off, and handing the money to the clerk in the supermarket. Why, you ask, would anyone who loves dogs, take a barking, biting, urinating, chewing pup, train her to be a good dog, and then just when life with a dog has become easier, give her back to the people who bred her? Good question. I love puppies. I love effecting the transformation from wild thing to good dog. But more important than that, I have seen the difference these dogs make in people s lives and I want to use my knowledge and skill to be part of that difference. Taylor is the fifth dog I have raised. The first, Penni, became a therapy dog in a school for deaf children. The second, Kathleen II, became a breeder of service dogs, giving birth to 35 potential service dogs in five litters. The third, Lombard, was paired with an American hero, a wounded veteran. The fourth, Dewey II (one of Kathleen s pups), was paired with a young college student with cerebral palsy, who because of the dog, can live independently in the college dorm. Taylor s job will be determined as she develops her skills in advanced training. We are all given gifts, as St. Paul says, to enhance the body of Christ. St. Paul did not envision training dogs as a gift. But that is my gift and raising service dogs is my ministry. As long as God gives me strength to hold a leash and walk down the street, I will continue to raise dogs for people with disabilities. Please do not pat me on the back and tell me what a good person I am. I am doing what I love to do and am rewarded by seeing the joy and hope in the people who receive these dogs. And yes, it is hard to give them up. -8-

9 All Soul s Day Envelopes We are approaching November, traditionally the month of the Holy Souls. A Novena of Masses is offered up during the month for our deceased friends and relatives. If you wish to have a loved one remembered at this Novena, there are envelopes available throughout the church, where you may list the names of your loved ones. The envelopes can be dropped in the collection basket at any of the Sunday Masses over the next few weeks. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Clothing Drive On behalf of the needy neighbors we serve, your St. Vincent de Paul Conference is having a Clothing Drive on Sunday, November 6th. A St. Vincent de Paul Society truck will be in the north parking lot from 7:30 am to 1 pm to accept your donations of clothing. For the past two years our parish was able to collect over 3,000 pounds of clothing to meet the increased demands the Society receives as we approach the colder winter. Our Social Ministry office gives a clothing voucher to anyone who comes to us in need, redeemable at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store free of charge. Please take this opportunity to check your closets for items you really don t need which could make a real difference to the poor who are in need. Thank you. Gloria Boyd, President Saint Vincent de Paul Conference ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY The Rosary Altar Society s Christmas Fair will be held on Saturday, November 12th and Sunday, November 13th. Members of the Society will be selling raffle tickets at the exits of the church this weekend after all the Masses.
