2 PASTOR S PAGE Yard Sale Earlier this summer, under the leadership of Maureen Wagner, a group of parishioners had a yard sale in our auditorium. A yard sale, very much like a garage sale, raised money for the needs of the parish. Anything left over from the sale was sent, at the cost of the parish, to a charity in New Jersey. Maureen deserves a huge thank you for assembling a committee to help her with this mission. Many parishioners worked tirelessly with Maureen for several months to make their efforts successful. Her husband, Henry, and her son, Michael, also gave much of their time all weekend long to make sure all went well Memorial Mass As I mentioned the past two weeks in the parish bulletin, we will celebrate a special Mass in memory of September 11, 2001 on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at our 11:00 A.M. Mass. Everyone is welcome. If you would like a name mentioned for a family member or friend who lost his/her life on this tragic day, please send me an or call the office. If you call the office please have your call transferred to my voice mail and leave a very clear message. Sometimes people leave me a voice mail message from their cell phone and I am not able to hear it. Our local New Hyde Park fire department will also be an important part of this Mass. Parish Appreciation Party On Friday, Saturday 30 th, we will have a parish appreciation party downstairs in the auditorium. You will be hearing more about this very soon. We have a committee working hard to give the volunteers a relaxing and enjoyable evening. Tony Jackson will MC the evening, which will include light entertainment. Some of our teenage girls will be volunteer waitresses; who knows maybe some of them will also sing. If you haven t done so, please save the date. Would you like to be a volunteer? If you would like to be a parish volunteer we can always use your help. If you would like to offer your time but are unsure what to do, please let me know and we can sit down and talk about it. 3 DEACON LACHLAN The Olympics are behind us now for another four years.well at least the Summer Olympics..we will have the winter version in about two years from now. In many of the scenes shown on television these last few weeks from Rio, we saw one of the great symbols of the Brazilian city..the statue of Christ the Redeemer, which sits atop Sugar Loaf Mountain. It is listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and has become one of Brazil s most famous landmarks. Measuring 124 feet tall with an arm span of 92 feet wide, it is almost as big as the Statue of Liberty. So what is the story behind this beautiful statue? In the early 20th century a local group in Rio called the Catholic Circle saw a need to reclaim the city for Christ. At the end of World War One, the Catholic Circle feared an advancing tide of godlessness. Church and state had been separated when Brazil became a republic at the end of the previous century, and they saw the statue as a way of reclaiming Rio..which was then Brazil s capital city.for Christianity. The project was then taken up by the Archdiocese of Rio, which proposed it, and a petition was created to convince the president to allow it to take shape. A host of workers started construction on the massive statue in 1922 and completed it in It was built using metal scaffolding and cranes with the materials being carried up the mountain by railway. There have been many lightning strikes to the statue over the years, and it has been refurbished on a number of occasions to repair the damage. The statue was officially opened to visitors on October 12, 1931, and in 2006 the Archbishop of Rio consecrated a chapel on the 75th anniversary of the statue s opening. 6 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We are in need of additional Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers to serve at weekday masses (Monday through Saturday at ). This would require serving two to three days a month. Virtus Training is required for both positions. Eucharistic Ministers are required to attend additional training. Lectors do not require any other training and will be given a briefing on what to do and provided a website where the readings can be reviewed beforehand. 7 9-11 REMEMBRANCE NEW HYDE PARK FIRE DEPARTMENT The DEDICATION OF A 9-11 MONUMENT will take place at the New Hyde Park Fire Department Headquarters located at 155 Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 7:00 in the evening. This monument is dedicated for the 15 th Anniversary of the attacks on our country. The monument will honor those members of our community who lost their lives on that tragic day. It is a small gesture to acknowledge to their families that we as a community will not forget their loss. This monument will also be in memory of the members of our Department who perished on September 11, 2001 as well as those whose passing is a result of an injury or illness sustained while selflessly dedicating themselves to the rescue, recovery, and restoration efforts at the World Trade Center. All members of the community are invited to attend this dedication. Mass on September 11 th at 11:00 A.M. We are in the midst of planning a Mass to remember all those who lost their lives on September 11 th, After a brief homily names will be mentioned and bells will be rung. To make this more meaningful for our parishioners, I am asking for names of any of our parishioners who lost their lives during this tragic day. Additionally, if you lost a family member or a good friend, we would be happy to mention their name as well. 8 Holy spirit 50/50 club Renewal It is renewal time for most subscribers. We currently have 229 subscribers. 143 of these subscriptions will run through August and will be up for renewal in September. We also have 38 subscribers who will run through September and will be up for renewal in October. Therefore, we hope you will consider renewing your subscription now or at the beginning a new one at this time. A one year subscription to the Club is $100. This will entitle you to 12 monthly drawings. This past year our monthly prize has ranged between $765 and $955. Of course, this has also been a great fundraiser for our parish which receives half of the total that is taken in. In order to renew your subscription all that is needed is to fill out a form or simply put your name, address, phone and on a piece of paper and enclose in an envelope with your $100 check. The envelope may be place in the Sunday Collection if it is clearly marked for Club or dropped at the rectory during regular business hours Forms are available in the Rectory Office.
