2 PASTOR S PAGE The Ascension This past Thursday (Ascension Thursday), we celebrated the Ascension of Jesus Christ. Forty days after Easter (the Resurrection), Jesus ascended into heaven in his resurrected body, in the presence of his Apostles. This is not a parable or a story but a historical event! Jesus physically ascended into heaven! Where he now is, we hope someday to be. Last Saturday night, April 30 th, at the 5:00 P.M. Mass, we celebrated a special day for five parishioners. Larry and Mary Centola celebrated their 70 th wedding anniversary and Rocky and Terry Drago celebrated their 60 th wedding anniversary. These two couples have spent most or all of their lives worshiping here at Holy Spirit Parish. They never miss a Mass. They have received so much grace, strength and happiness from their faith. Together, as a parish, we prayed a Hail Mary and asked for God s continued blessings. These are truly wonderful and faith filled people. See their pictures posted in this week s bulletin. At the same Mass, we celebrated a very special birthday for Nan Smith. Nan turned 102 years old earlier that week. Nan attributes her health and happiness to her faith in Jesus Christ. She has a tremendous love for our parish and is grateful to God for the gift of life. She briefly spoke at the Mass at the applause of the congregation. Her picture is also posted in this week s bulletin. Next week is our Parish Feast Day: Pentecost Pentecost is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit prepares us with his grace in order to draw us to Christ. Saint Cyril of Alexandria tells us, it is quite natural for people who had been absorbed by the things of this world to become entirely otherworldly in outlook, and for cowards to become people of great courage. The Holy Spirit gives us the strength and Jesus gives us the courage to do anything we need to do. The five parishioners named above are a wonderful example to us. The Apostles are another great example as seen in the first reading today. Jesus is the perfect and ultimate example! We need to trust in God. 3 DEACON LACHLAN On the morning of February 7, 1904, Baltimore s Great Fire demolished more than 1,500 buildings, leaving 35,000 people without work. Thomas O Neill was not one of them. As the fire raged, the self-made multimillionaire and devout Catholic ran to a nearby Carmelite Convent and asked the sisters to pray with him that his building be spared. The fire stopped at the southern wall of his building. In thanksgiving for the blessing, Thomas left two-thirds of his vast estate for the building of a new cathedral for Baltimore, and the result is the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. This architectural wonder is a symphony of stone and glass that sings the praises of Jesus and his Mother, the Virgin Mary. It is one of the most stunning and distinctive cathedrals in the country, and one that any visitor to Baltimore should make a point of visiting. Made out of more than 3.5 million bricks and 70,000 pieces of limestone, the cathedral is massive. It houses more than 385 sculptures and hundreds of panels of angular stained glass that bathe the cathedral in colored light and tell the story of our salvation Aside from being a feast for the eyes and heart, the cathedral is, above all, a house of God. The 11-foot limestone crucifix atop the central entrance reminds us that the purpose of this building is the celebration of the sacrifice of the Mass. Below, a 20-foot bas relief of Christ the Risen King reminds us of Jesus triumph over death. The twelve apostles flank Jesus, holding the symbols that help us identify them, and an 8-foot statue of Mary Our Queen stands above the door, welcoming us inside. The Cathedral of Mary Our Queen has four chapels, eight side altars, and two small shrines. The chapels are dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament, the Virgin Mary, St Joseph, and St Thomas More in the Memorial Chapel, which honors laymen whose spirit of devotion to the church was emulated by the cathedral s benefactor, Thomas O Neill. The side altars honor saints with ties to the archdiocese: Saints Vincent de Paul, Ignatius of Loyola, John Vianney, Sulpice, Michael the Archangel, Patrick, Peter, and Pope Pius X Cathedrals like this, so rich in detail and decoration, are a wonderful reminder of the timelessness of our Church and the vastness of the Communion of Saints. But the backstory of this cathedral s creation tells a story that hearkens to Jesus miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. Thomas O Neill was grateful that his business was spared that fiery morning in 1904, and fifty years later, he enabled this magnificent building to be built. Did he know how many lives it would change, how many hearts it would touch? I doubt it. But God knew. God took his fish and made this glorious monument to His love for us that keeps giving decades later. (Credit to Aleteia for some of the information and the picture). 7 MEMORIAL DAY - MASS - SUNDAY MAY 29, 2016 Memorial Day is a day that we remember those who died while serving our United States Armed Forces. On Sunday, May 29, 2016, Holy Spirit will honor our fallen brothers and sisters at the 9:30 am mass. We ask all those who served in our United States Military, from any branch (Active, Reserve or Retired), to wear their uniform. Any US Military Uniform is acceptable to include Class A Dress Uniform, Fatigues, BDUs, or ABUs. SAVE THE DATE Social ministry Thank you for all that you do!
